Firmware update 3.40 hitting June 29 with PlayStation Plus

Thursday, 17th June 2010 01:47 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Buried at the bottom of the press release for PlayStation Plus, Sony mentioned that users who sign up for the service will have to install firmware update 3.40 first.

Meanwhile, other than updating the console to use the service, there are many holding out hope that cross-game voice chat will be included in the update.

Here’s the excerpt from release:

PlayStation users can purchase PlayStation Plus membership through PlayStation Store on PS3 only. Users need to install PS3 system software version 3.40, which will be released on June 29nd, to enjoy PlayStation Plus.

Start the wondering now.

Well I think we can safely say that this won’t be a huge update (not in size obviously, for which it will be another fucking massive 160mb of pointless downloading) otherwise they would have shown it at E3.

And here I was, hoping for more XMB integration with the PS store, the video store, Home, etc…

Didn’t Jeff Keighly say there would be a brand new XMB redesign or am I thinking about Cheapy D rumor he stated on the CAG cast.

I doubt it will happen, but I would love to see an xmb update… I’ve had a love/hate relationship with it ever since it first arrived on the PSP. I really like how sleek and polished it looks (especially the HD PS3 version), but I really dislike the layout and functionality of it. I just find it very counter-intuitive.
