THQ plans to “shake up Blizzard” with WH40K MMO

THQ games VP Danny Bilson told attendees during an analyst meeting at E3 yesterday that Vigil’s WH40K MMO, Dark Millennium Online, is meant to “shake up Blizzard”.
After showing the industry analysts a video demonstration of the game, Bilson said he wanted to show that Vigil is doing a lot of stuff that WoW currently isn’t, in THQ’s eyes.
“Some people thought ‘wow, did we show too much?’ I don’t think so,” said Bilson at the end of the demo (per CVG). “I kind of wanted to shake up Blizzard a little bit and show that, because there’s a lot of stuff they have to do to do some of the things we’re doing there.
“They are awesome – don’t get me wrong – but we’re in the game.”
The first screens and video for the game can be checked out through here.
More information on DMO will be revealed at gamescom in August.

Dear THQ,
I want your game to rock. But it’s still early days, and you have a long time to go. Please spend it wisely, polishing and refining your own product, instead of jinxing it with the usual LOLWOWKILLA smacktalk that always ends in tears and disappointment. Less keeping up with the Jonses, more building your own solid foundation, please.
Thanks,
Me.

Relics can do that with the Warhammer 40K MMORPG.
Relics are very talented developers, so they have chance to shake up Blizzard really much.

First make a solid foundation for the game then once that is set up then aim a little higher.
Thats what killed EA’s Warhammer they aimed way too high even tried to emulate WoW forgetting what made it so successful.

The only thing that has the potential of shaking up Blizzard is SWTOR.

You’ve got to be kidding.
After 3 or 4 solid years of MMOs targeting WoW, copying WoW, proclaiming to be the next WoW, and being discarded within a month of release as crappy WoW clones… they still won’t learn.
No MMO has ever succeeded by killing an older MMO. Ever. That’s not how it works. You have to build your own game, with its own reason to play.

THQ, given your title rock solid, Blizzard folks did not sit on their rear ends during all these times. trust me their next MMO title will blow everyone’s mind. just wait until BlizCon 10, and big big big MMORPG announcement will turn you plans upside down. and you know most of the folks like me are already SOLD.

It does work like that, WoW had no ambition at all besides being a polished Everquest-clone. Blizzard took over the market.
At least DMO seems to be doing things differently with better combat and vehicles. The fact it has the most exciting sci-fi IP in the biz means something as well.

I believe that millions will be turned off by a scifi themed mmorpg.
I know I won’t touch one. Too many things that could go wrong. With a fantasy based game, you know what to expect more or less.
Star Trek or Tolkin? Hmm?
Tolkin each and every time.

If Blizzard was going to make Starcraft MMO with the same caliber as Warcraft I would easily go for Starcraft. How about Star Wars vs Tolkien? I would easily go into the Star Wars band wagon.

It’s supposedly a completely new IP too.
World of StarCraft or World of Call-of-Duty-sci-fi-edition would be massive yes but if Blizzard has to craft an entire new universe… we’ll see but the setting alone gives DMO an edge by default imo. You can’t get more badass than WH40k.

If THQ wants to shake things up, they should start by making a descent game for once.

Never played so not sure. It looks interesting with a Fantasy/Scifi thing going but thats it. Making statements like these without proof is moronic.

Euh, at least we know something about DMO and at least THQ has shown some of their cards already with this trailer and the screenshots. They’re actually going for something new here with all the vehicles and third person shooting action. This could be the perfect mix of Tabula-Rasa-done-right and PlanetSide. Vigil Games aren’t rookies either and they got some of the best artists in the entire industry. And again: WH40k shouldn’t be underestimated.
Nobody has seen the new Blizzard MMO yet. If they’re going to be just as original and EQ-like as with WoW then I am simply not interested. But hey, who knows, it might be the first completely new experience Blizzard has thought up since the first Diablo? One can only hope…
As for THQ: if you think they haven’t released decent games yet then you’ve missed a few dozen titles I think.
