MS: Black Ops exclusivity window’s a “big deal for us”

Microsoft’s Chris Lewis has defended the company’s choice to open its E3 press conference with the news that all DLC for Call of Duty: Black Ops will hit Xbox 360 before anywhere else.
Speaking with VG247 in and interview, Lewis said that the reason it opened with a COD bang, was because this was big news for the company, and a big deal to it.
“That is a hugely significant deal,” he said. “Somebody asked me that yesterday, they were like ‘ So, wow, you started with that versus of your own IP’ – but that is a massively significant deal for us. And, are we truly agnostic in terms of our own content versus others? Yeah! Of course we are! Because from our point of view it’s just rich consumer buffering that I think is almost second to none.
“So, yeah, it’s a big deal”.
The exclusivity deals won’t stop soon either, apparently, because MS is rather fond of the concept.
“We still love exclusive windows, we still love all of those things as you can imagine,” said Lewis. ” We love downloadable content because it plays uniquely to our strength of Xbox Live – certainly I think Call of Duty, Halo, games like that are synonymous with live gameplay.
“A lot of people we talk to don’t play those kind of games unless they’re connected to their friends and competing with their friends.
“So, those kinds of relationships, exclusive windows, those unique windows we can offer will always be important to us, yes”.

If its just a month like with MW2 then it really isnt anything to boast about.

@2 agreed.
funny to see MS is getting Activision exclusives while Sony gets EA. Talk about a split community this generation.
Wonder if that means Sony might get exclusive stuff around Respawn’s title?
I think the whole timed / special edition stuff is nonsense though, but I guess with two such similar consoles with 90% the same titles they need to do something to create a difference.

I think MS made a bad call by going with Activision now, and Sony is the clear victor with EA. I suspect that the Call of Duty franchise has had its day, especially since Treyarch is now its main dev, and that Medal of Honor (from what we’ve seen at the conferences) will steal its crown with Sony laughing all the way to the bank with all the EA exclusives.
From what we’ve seen at the conferences, at the moment EA > Activision. Wonder if MS has noticed this and thought ‘oh fuck’

They don’t need to defend it because it’s indefensible. It might be a big deal to the money guys at Microsoft, but it’s was a crappy way to open a press conference. Whoever organised this year’s show needs a kick up the arse.

I think Sony got the better deals with EA, what with Mafia II getting exclusive mission content, Medal of Honour: Modern Warfare
having an HD update of an older title and Dead Space 2 having a Move enabled version of Extraction.
Those are things that are far more likely to make me buy the PS3 version of a game than the opportunity to pay for some MP maps earlier than everyone else.

All these exclusivity deals mean I own neither the GTA4 add-ons or any of the CoD maps.
I’d moved on by the time they reached the PS3. I’m sure the same will be true for some 360 owners that shafted in the other direction. Exclusivity is up there with region locking as a slap in the face for gamers. I’m intrigued as to why Microsoft think it’s a good thing. Do they really think I’m going to splash out on their console just to play a few maps earlier than another console?
I’d rather they use their money hats to pay for exciting new games but obviously I must be some kind of weirdo.

I’ve been next-gen for nearly two years now and I’ve yet to buy a single piece of DLC.

COD series is tiiiiiired. Using tweaked versions of the COD 4 game engine, the environments look like a hollywood set. Pretty but if you look behind you’ll see the plywood and cardboard. Wake me up when they get some destructible environments.

The Exclusivity is not a “month” but until 2012…That is over 2 years that PS3 owners will not get the content. Doesn’t impact me as I own both consoles, but wow a 2 year exclusivity is a HUGE deal, where as a month would not be.

No, thats not how it works. The 2012 date is by game, not the DLC itself.
So say a map pack comes out for Black Ops, it’ll come out on PS3 and PC a month later (if its like MW2). Same for next CoD game, and the one after that till 2012.

@10 No, thats not how it works. DLC will be first for Xbox 360 then later for PS3 and PC. It’s not a big deal at all.

I think this is more of an Activision fumble than MS. Timed exclusivity over other platforms is hardly a motivator to buy $15 DLC. Microsoft will be laughing all the way to the bank sure but Activision will be missing the potential revenue from the gamers who already move on to other games.
DLC is an excellent way of extending the longevity of any game. Delaying that, it just does the opposite.
