360 Slimline announced, in stores this week

Monday, 14 June 2010 20:02 GMT By Johnny Cullen

new360Update: 360 Slim will be available in Europe on July 16.

Original: Mattrick’s just revealed the much speculated Xbox 360 Slim for the first time.

Simply put: 250Gb, built-in wi-fi and in stores this week, with shipping beginning today.

And in an Oprah-like moment, Mattrick told everyone in the audience – including Pat and Nathan – that they would be getting a free Slim 360.

Lucky cunts.

Now, who owes Pachter some money?

Looks sexy as hell. Not impressed by the Kinect stuff, but was I ever going to be? (No.) Also, that Star Wars game looked like absolute garbage.

That’s really great…but i wouldn’t rush to buy one(i already have the old one)until i hear from people that there are really no problems with it.

No price drop makes no sense imo. The only reason PS3 slims sold so well is because they were cheaper.

    #9 5 years ago
  10. Tallon 4

    Another disc tray? Why???
Wii and PS3 haven’t got one. My only reason to probably buy is that’s it won’t make as much noise, but that’s not worth my 299.

Holy crap the Kinect stuff was some of the most boring stuff I’ve ever seen. However do want the new xbox. Now. I hope GameStop will have a trade in old for new deal.

    #18 5 years ago
  19. Psychotext

Wouldn’t have made a difference to the piracy Redh3lix. Slot load drives are essentially the same aside from the loading mechanism.

I’d wager they avoided it because they’ve got a tendency to fail more often than tray loading drives… and MS are a little bit wary about console failures right now.

  22. AHA-Lambda

    ooo shiny

THIS apart from rising was the ONLY surprising part and that’s sad.

I am immensely jealous of everyone in the audience getting a 360 for free cos right now i am EMBARASSED to have actually bought one.

PS: How much money wise is that they’re giving away?!?! O_O
PPPS: I call audience bribes on this cos they’re conference was so crap. This way journalists wont call it the worst e3 conference eer and all that

    #22 5 years ago
  23. SunKing

Just about the only thing I cared about during that whole conference was the new Xbox, and I’m not even buying one. The Kinect stuff isn’t for me or the “core” market – the very market the Xbox was built upon – and yet they’re going for this entirely different audience. There’s a very good chance it’ll fall flat on its face, imho.

    #23 5 years ago
  24. g00nerz

It does look nice, if not exactly slim line. The new design is futuristic and smart. I will wait to see if it can handle heat, and the promise of being ‘whisper silent’ sounds too good to be true.

Interesting that the usual spot reserved for announcing the latest playstation exclusive turncoat was absent. there just ain’t no more left to steal!

    #24 5 years ago
  25. cookiejar

It looks like the original Xbox. Nice, though.

    #25 5 years ago
  26. Freek

Non of those Kinect games looked particularly polished or original. Considering it’s going up against the well established and much cheaper Wii, they have work cutt out to say the least.

    #26 5 years ago
  27. akrillic

What about all of us who watched the live blog….? I’ll settle for xbox live points to the value of a Slimline, thanks.

    #27 5 years ago
  28. The Hindle

I dont get why they have not dropped the price.

    #28 5 years ago
  29. justiceblob

I really don’t like that design. Let’s remember this is the xbox MS want families to buy, how family friendly does it look compared to the current 360. Neutral curves > Black edges IMO

    #29 5 years ago
  30. Moonwalker1982

Metal Gear was the only surprise really IMO. It looked awesome and i didn’t expect it there. Kinect took over the whole fucking show, what a goddamn shame that is.

    #30 5 years ago
  31. Freek

It’s the Apple model: more features, better looking, same price.
The PS3 needed to drop the price becuase nobody wanted it at 400 bucks, the 360 diden’t have that issue.

    #31 5 years ago
  32. Filofax

New box looks nice, can’t say I’m liking the big bloody crease down the centre though.

    #32 5 years ago
  33. Psychotext

    Decent set of images here:

@TH: That’ll be at the end of the year. No need to do it now as you might as well grab the profit from people willing to grab anything new and shiny.

    #33 5 years ago
  34. Droid

Is there a comparison photo anywhere with the new vs old? From what I’ve seen so far, the new console looks the same size as the old one, just with the hard drive tucked inside instead of on the top.
I am surprised they havent put that kinect thing inside it though.

    #34 5 years ago
  35. polygem

the conference was so bad. 85 % kinect and kinect looked so superboring – who plays these games- seriously – i don´t get it! if i want to do sports i put on my sneakers and take my dog for a run, i f i wanna dance i go to a club. consoles are for games. i´m a 360 lover. but it really looks like this will change. can´t wait for sony this year. ms: nothing about handheld ambitions, no ff 13 versus and only games everyone knew about already for ages (except the crytek one)…watching the press conference really wasted my time. huge let down…

    #35 5 years ago
  36. reask

    Nice one PT.

  37. DaMan

btw, terrible E3 conference. told you it will be all about Nat- er, Kinect.

    #37 5 years ago
  38. No_PUDding

That was cool for Rising trailer, and for the Crytek announcement.

Good stuff there. The other stuff is not what I watch E3 for, so I am a little disappointed.

If they drop the price of the other 360′s, then colour me more interested. I might be able to per-chase one.

    #38 5 years ago
  39. Anders

@34: They had a shell shaped as the old version placed over the new model at the conference. The difference looked pretty substantial.

    #39 5 years ago
  40. Blerk

That’s really weird. It looks like a fat bloke sat on it and broke it in half.

    #40 5 years ago
  41. Redh3lix

As a PS3 owner (and dad to three) Kinetic looked great for my kids (and wife). There were more than a few titles that looked great fun for them. The only aspect putting me off is the RUMOURED price of the damn thing. That coupled with purchasing an XBox in the first place is just too much.

I think ultimately Microsoft’s conference was a success in reaching the casual gaming audience and outlining the navigational features plus offering a glimpse of core title integration (e.g. Star Wars, Forza).

    #41 5 years ago
  42. AHA-Lambda

i just hope the press doesnt get swept up in the hype of their new free 360s ignoring the downsides.

This was MS’ wii music moment.

The future of gaming people ;)

    “Lucky cunts.”

your telling me, i feel like i’m owed one for sitting through that garbage!

    #42 5 years ago
  43. No_PUDding

I agree Blerk, if by that you’re trying to say it’s avant-garde.

    #43 5 years ago
  44. Psychotext

I don’t think it’s a ton smaller though. Wont be long before we get exact details.

    #44 5 years ago
  45. DJ Deathstar

Will definately upgrade to the new 360 as i need to buy a new wireless adapter and a new hard drive anyways so may as well upgrade!

Rising, Reach, Gears 3 etc all looked immense though majority of Kinetic looked a bit naff though the Forza thing looked pretty cool. Am suprised there was no Summer of Arcade announcement? Is there a session thing after the conference like last year where this may be announced???

    #45 5 years ago
  46. Stefan1904

The new model will retail at the same price as the current Elite. The Arcade und Elite will drop in price by 50$.

The HDD is easy to change, comparable to the PS3. Digital Out and Kinect-Port on the back.

    #46 5 years ago
  47. Blerk

I was trying to say it was a bit fugly, Pud. :-D

Are the USB ports only on the back now? I didn’t realise the PSU was internal now, that’s pretty good. If it truly is whisper quiet I could probably be persuaded to upgrade if GAME are doing decent trade-in deals.

    #47 5 years ago
  48. fearmonkey

MS’s conference was very “meh” this year, at least in my opinion. I was hoping for some head tracking and alternate controls in a serious game, but all we got was the wii like stuff. No price on Kinetic? No Major game announcements from Bethesda? ONE exclusive from Crytek but no gameplay. Not a sports fan so the ESPN stuff bored me, and the wii motion control gaming is not what I want to play.

I find myself hoping that Nintendo and Sony have some stuff that excite me, because MS’s conference was like Nintendo’s with Ravi Drums.

    #48 5 years ago
  49. No_PUDding

Personally I think it looks pretty swish. These press shots never do new hardware justification anyway.

    #49 5 years ago
  50. Blerk

It does look to be a fair bit smaller.

    #50 5 years ago
  51. Quiiick

Any pictures of the new power-supply brick yet?
Or have they finally managed to put it inside the box like the PS3?

    #51 5 years ago
  52. rainer

It really does look like a Dell/Alienware PC or any of those other awful “gaming” PC cases.

But hey if it’s actually quiet unlike the original (even idle) than thats worth it.

Edit: Here is a rear shot, power cable is definitely different from the old models.

    #52 5 years ago
  53. Gadzooks!

That’s a nice looking machine! Think I’ll see if I can trade in my launch premium for one of these bad boys, move the elite upstairs.

    #53 5 years ago
  54. theevilaires

Holy shit quiiick is back :D, and Gadzooks only a XBOT would say that machine looks good….sorry kid its not that appealing and neither was the original….the PS3 slim sucks too.

    #54 5 years ago
  55. DaMan

MS are doing everyting right with the Kinetic, I’m just not into that stuff.

meh. Halo was okay, and Gears too, but duh that was expected. Crytek developing a 360 exclusive isn’t a good thing really (for anyone except MS that is), I’d rather they just concentrate on Crysis for PC. and that ‘cur cut’ thing didn’t impress me one bit, nothing exciting there.

    #55 5 years ago
  56. Anders

@TEA: Or someone who actually thinks that it looks good.

    #56 5 years ago
  57. DrDamn

It does have tones of all that is wrong with a lot of PC gaming rigs recently, but it’s not that bad. It will probably look nice in the flesh. I think the original design was a bit of a design classic though. This is less distinctive.

    #57 5 years ago
  58. Dralen

That does look like a very nice looking machine.

Not sure why they are changing from the original white colour to black though? Probably because it looks better, but it doesn’t feel very unique anymore.

    #58 5 years ago
  59. AHA-Lambda

sigh i am SSOOOO pissed i decided to get a 360 last month and didnt just wait :(

then again if i waited i might not have got one after that =/
hell i’m partly regretting it now -_-

    #59 5 years ago
  60. spiderLAW

Hmmm…. It looks slicker and cleaner. It’s a cool design for new comers but for a person that has had 3 Xbox 360s (me, 2 failed hard) there is no reason for a trade in. I could get this if it were more reliable than the classic but i have said before,”If my Elite dies on me too, I will not purchase another Microsoft game console again.”

    #60 5 years ago
  61. reask

Judging by that pic Blerk it really is a lot smaller.
Kudos to MS I say. :)

    @48. exactly.

    #62 5 years ago

Do you have to swear so much? it makes for very ugly reading.

    #64 5 years ago
  65. kingofscotland

New model does look good but it doesn’t hide the fact that their conference was very poor and they know it which is why they just bribed all the journalists with a new xbox.

    #65 5 years ago
  66. Stoopid_Snot

    looks like a PS3 with a tray

    #66 5 years ago
  67. zoopdeloop

The Slim model looks a lot better than the old plus it has Wi-fi build in… but truth be told Microsoft does know how to bribe and wide in the open like that(surprise to the crowd)…the sad thing is that there are still naive people who will not see it that way.

    #67 5 years ago
  68. sg1974

    Is the hard drive propietry?

If so its a MASSIVE ripoff, not compatible with existing 360 drives! and not compatible with SATA drives, so probably more expensive per gigabyte than SATA.

form factor is nice though, like Alien Ware.

    #68 5 years ago
  69. DaMan

it doesn’t really look any better in my view, at a glance it only seems more cheap and ugly, same as the slim PS 2/3.
