Halo 3 outsells Sony’s big exclusives combined

halo3

Aaron Greenberg has gone on the Twitter record to state that according to new NPD data, Halo 3 has outsold a number of Sony’s big hitters.

According to his tweet, Halo 3 has outsold both Resistance 1 and 2, Uncharted 1 and 2, Killzone 2 and God of War III combined.

Youch.

Greenberg didn’t provide the exact sales figures, but it doesn’t take a massive stretch of the imagination to know that Halo 3 sold $GOD, but better than all sales of those huge Sony titles combined? That’s impressive.

We’ve mailed Microsoft and NPD both to see if we can get the exact figures.

@42 If you own a company (will never happen) and you invest in a diverse range of products that most people believe have quality but don’t sell, what are you, as the owner of the business going to do? Continue to invest in a diverse quality range of products that simply not enough people buy to merit further investment, or do you perhaps have a bit of a rethink?

Killzone 2 didn’t sell, Heavy Rain didn’t sell, Uncharted 2 didn’t sell, LBP didn’t sell etc. etc. Although they’re all quality titles, I very much doubt you’ll be seeing many more of “these types” of games if they continue to fail at retail.

It’s not rocket science, really.

@49: Last warning. :)

To all the passionate PlayStation Fans back off this articles comments. Let the XBOTS have their little party. E3 they will be destroyed.

We all know Halo 3 was crap and was just over hyped bull. It sold for that reason alone. ODST is proof enough. Just back off and let them sip their champagne.

This is not a sprint. It is a marathon.

@54: What’s the PS3′s install base?

#60

Boris Fett

@59 35.7 million as of March 2010.

People seem to forget that when Gran Turismo 3 sold like hot-cakes, the PS2 had sold at least twice this many units in the same span of time.

Unlike now, where we have two valid core gaming consoles (and a third that *sometimes* delivers), the PS2 was the only console that developers and publishers needed to support to be successful.

The biggest victim of having two lead consoles like we do right now is the first party developers, who have a much smaller portion of the pie to eat from now than they used to.

I’m not much into shooters and Microsoft’s exclusive and succesful line up… up to this point is primarly based upon them.No real innovation…
Sony’s exclusive line up on the other hand may not be so “succesful”(sales wise)but at least there’s more variety.

So less than/or around 10% of PS3 owners bought Heavy Rain, Killzone 2, Uncharted 2 and LBP.

That’s simply not enough by anyone’s standards.

I cant believe people are actually expecting games like HR to do over 10m, i find that to be amazing.

#65

Did Crackdown, Banjo Kazooie, Viva Pinata1+2, Forza Motorsport, Mass Effect 1+2, Blue Dragon, Youre in the movies sell well Mike because they all sold same as to what HR did. Halo 3 was a massive pop culture event only certain ips will ever do that.

“That’s simply not enough by anyone’s standards.”

And by the ‘standards’ you’re setting only about 10 franchises across all platforms manage to sell ‘well’.

Mike
09/06/10, 9:12 pm

It’s all about context. These are major first party exclusives that seperate PS3 from the pack.

Stop being so defensive. It’s rather tiring.

STOP FEEDING HIM! He has the power of a thousand XBOTS now. Just back off the article and attack him after M$ E3 press conference. (that’s when he’ll be weak and vulnerable after another failed NATAL demo) :D

#71

All that matters at the end of the day is that those PS3 exclusive games are amazing games that are unique to the console.

And most of those games live up to that promise, and then some. The first party titles that have been pumped out by Sony over the last year and a half have been nothing short of amazing.

Who cares how well something sells? Sales have never been an effective barometer for quality.

Look at the time period that Halo 3 was released compared to Uncharted 2

Galactic_Barret

Ok, if we’re doing the apples to oranges, how about apples to apples? BKNB vs. R&C? A. Wake vs. HR? Forza 2 vs. GT5:P?

This is kinda a douche thing to say, I feel, but it has always seemed like the XBox platform was the go-to console for shooters, since the OG XBox days. It seems like anyone I know with one has at least H3 and/or MW2. Thats a battle any fanboy should cede. What about other genres? Or should we keep on waging a war that was decided before its birth?

Only retards are turning this argument into a 360/PS3 thing. As per fucking usual.

The xbox has alot of people under 16 year thats why fps games and other shooters sell well if they released Heavy Rain on the Xbox it wouldnt sell shit

#76

theevilaires
09/06/10, 9:26 pm

why can’t it be a PS3/360 thing? why you gotta put the 360 part first :D

#77

Gekidami
09/06/10, 9:26 pm

Thats because thats what this is about. Courtesy of Greenberg.

What? You think he decided to point out how it sold better then several PS3 exclusives as a random example?

#78

Mike
09/06/10, 9:29 pm

Yeah, but “this” discussion is about sales compared to install base. I never mentioned 360. I never said “360s games sell better.” I said, that first party PS3 games haven’t sold as well as Sony would’ve liked and that sales and quality aren’t inseparable.

@74, but you actually did it.

PS: BTW, Mass Effect 2 sold for 1 million and 770000 copies. Mass Effect 1 sold for 2 millione and we see a decline on that franchise, not to mention that for 2 weeks ME2 sold for 1.230 million copies.
While Heavy Rain as a niche game sold for 1 million and 300000 copies overall and still selling.

Sorry, mike, but the topic is PS3 titles vs 360 titles. Read the headline.

Still, what is ME2, L4D2, Gears @ compared to its install base? Just to go along. I want to see where you are trying to take this.

I’m sure MS is disappointed sales-wise, yes. And I’m sure those sales will be taken into consideration before any money is put forward for a sequel.

As for its quality, I haven’t played it sop I wouldn’t know.
