Rumor: Valve’s E3 surprise is Source Engine 2

valve

A VG247 source has claimed that Valve’s “surprise” at E3 will be the unveiling of Source Engine 2.

The source, who wished to remain anonymous, said it’s possible Valve will be showing Half-Life 3 running on it – which would fit with the firm’s M.O. of showing Half-Life games on new versions of the code.

Half-Life was shown running on GoldSource, while Source debuted in June 2004 with Counter-Strike and Half-Life 2 shown on it.

Rumors surrounding Valve’s plans for E3 have been swirling about since it canceled its Portal 2 event for the conference, stating that a “surprise” would instead be in store for attendees.

Last week, a suspicious looking image taken of the E3 pamphlet that supposedly showed a date of June 14 with the name “Freeman” on it when converted to negative format surfaced.

While very dodgy looking, it still got folks to talking, enough to have Valve head Gabe Newell confirm that it was indeed a “fake”.

We have been told by Valve PR that Gabe himself will not be attending E3, so take all this with a giant pinch of salt.

It’s worth noting, however, that we’ve also been told that whatever Valve plans to reveal at E3 will not happen before either the Microsoft or Sony press conferences on June 14 and 15, respectively. So it’s quite possible that whatever surprise it has in store could happen at one or both of those pressers.

Rest assured, we will be liveblogging both events, so be sure and check in with us so you won’t miss anything.

In the meantime, we’ve mailed Valve for comment, so if we hear anything back we’ll update this post accordingly.

Well in any event, i’m glad they’re not sticking with the current Source engine for the next HL title.

I guess its time to wait and get our socks blown off all over again…

I can’t help but think that this is all just getting a bit out of hand. They’re not going to ‘not bother’ with Portal 2 all of a sudden, I think it’s more likely that they’ve just changed their plans slightly and it’ll still be a Portal 2 event but not the one that was originally planned. Or they planned it like this all along and the press release was just to get people talking about Valve in the run-up to the show.

Don’t forget, the original Source engine was built without a multiplatform deliverable strategy in mind.

In a similiar vein to the new CryEngine (and of course Mr. Newell’s own recent comment about looking into supporting the format more aggressively), it could well be (and should be) that the new Source engine is being developed to be scaled appopriately across PS3, 360 and PC.

@5 i dont think Valve will ever make a game for the Ps3, they just dont like the console.

I would be inclined to agree with you if it wasn’t for Gabe Newell’s softening stance on the platform.

I also believe that an effective multiplatform engine would go someways to sorting that out anyway (given of course that originally his problem with the PS3 was that it was a ‘complete bitch’ to code for).

To be fair though, now that I think about it, such an announcement would more likely be at the MS breifing than the Sony one, due to MS being more aggressive at chasing third-party exclusivity (timed or otherwise) than Sony.

Previous post corrected.

Wasn’t GoldSource for PC and PS2 anyway? I am inclined to believe Raining’s comments on the matter.

PS3 support with a new version of the engine seems much more likely than PS3 support with the existing Source engine. Then again, Mac support didn’t seem that likely just a short while ago.

This new engine is most likely going to be for the future though if the article is anything to go by so maybe it will be for the next gen.

If this is true, I hope the uneveiling is going to be on Sony’s conference.

Wow, if thats true then i’m dissapointed. The reason is that soon we will see next generation and Source engine 2 will be outdated. Still interested in that new thing.

@14 they might announce a new title demoing the source engine 2

I doubt we will see any concrete next generation plans for a couple of years at least under the current economic climate…

If the new engine makes Alyx look hotter, then I’m up for it.

Then again… maybe that’s why it’s taking them so long to release HL3. They’re trying to sculpt a better ass than Bayonetta’s with the source 2.

@14 What means soon to you? You think that SE2 will be outdated in three years? I think Valve knows more than you know. Just my thoughts. I’m so not dissapointed! I hope for another: “We don’t go to Ravenholm”-kinda level in HL3 :-D

If they’re unveiling Source Engine 2, they’re probably going to reveal a game to go along with it…

Yeah, if they design source 2 as multiplatform from the get-go, then i’d be extremely, ridiculously, hyped. Even more so if glados hijacked the SONY E3 conference. that would be megaton of insane proportions. :P

@20
The Glados thing would be the best marketing strategy ever, if they really pull it out.

Maybe at the MS conference, Sony arent really about putting on a show. Hell, everything thats said seems to be on the fly improvisation.

Yeah, everyone are excited for now, but what will be left for the next generation? Old engine from this gen?

I really am OK with the old Source Engine as long as Valve games have quality. Half-Life 2 even to this day looks amazing and you didn’t saw how good Left For Dead 2 looks on the PC with anti-aliasing and other stuff that consoles can’t do.

@Erthazus im pretty sure consoles (Xbox anyways) are capable of anti-aliasing…

well I hope Source Engine 2 will blow the fark me away!

Source engine was the best engine of 6th gen. Now it’s crap this 7th gen. So let’s hope it takes the lead again.

I would love that! The old engine is old and getting stale, also Half Life 2 EP3 on it?

@27 X2 anti aliasing? WOW… OH MY GOD! X2 Anti Aliasing. PC games have a standard of X16 anti-aliasing with Direct X11 Tesselation.
PS3 have for example Morphological Anti-Aliasing that was used at God Of War 3 in the right way. Thats X4 or X6… Oh my… It’s so huge. It’s a 2006 year. What a big deal.

What about filters and other stuff? Consoles can’t do that now and to make Source engine they are going to optimise it for a consoles, so in the next generation Source engine is going to be outdated.

Maybe with new engine Half-Life: Ep 3 or Half-Life 3 will blow our socks, but i’m still alright with the old one. source was not about the graphics, Source was about the PHYSICS!
But i’m sure that new Source won’t finish Cryengine 3, for that i’m sure.

Why does everyone seem to forget Valve said ‘it won’t be interesting for X360 and ps3′. So I even doubt it will be a half life game, since that would probably come out for X360 either.

Maybe if they do release a new engine, they will releas it for pc at first. But still it would be interesting for X360 on long terms. So my guess is…. it’s something about steam.
