Developers claim 3DS visuals close to Xbox 360 and PS3

Sunday, 6th June 2010 11:50 GMT By Joe Anderson

According to a recent article on IGN, some developers are claiming that the new Nintendo 3DS will be close to matching the HD quality graphics of the Xbox 360 and PS3.

The article states, “To provide stereoscopic 3D effects the system must have the ability to render each game field twice, one for each of the player’s eyes, a technique that will require significant horsepower to produce.”

The site then goes on to say “several developers that have experienced 3DS in its current form have reported, off the record, that it has processing capabilities that far exceed the Nintendo Wii and bring the device with abilities that are close to HD consoles such as PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.”

If this is the case, it’s possible Nintendo is looking to surpass the visual power of PSP and iPad, although strong rumour suggests Sony’s to take a significant leap forward in poly-grunt with PSP2.

More details on 3DS are expected to be revealed at E3 next week.

@1 By the time it gets here I imagine the PSP2 will be hear as well. + the ipad is also a real contender, providing it keeps getting games of the quality of Geometry wars touch.

about time for a REAL new handheld gen. i love handhelds. but right now. ipad, psp and ds all feel like kids stuff – not too excited about any of them. they´re alright but they could be so much better. i´m excited about the psp2 and the 3ds as well. i also hope that ms will soon step into the handheld arena with something beyond zune hd. i think it really is technically possible to put some “close to 360/ps3″ horsepower in a handheld system. biggest problem will be the cooling and the battery power though…

I just can’t believe that. But I suppose iPad is HD, so Nintendo probably feel that to comete with it they need HD too. /shrugs

    Crysis on 3DS? :D

@10 yeaaah IPad is so HD. 1 GHZ with 256 MB Ram. My sister had this PC like 10 years ago when she liked to browse the internet and watch some movies, photos and thats it.

“Developers claim 3DS visuals close to Xbox 360 and PS3″

Of course it is bullshit. Even PSP 2 with rumored 4 Cell Processor won’t come close to console graphics.

Nintendo will surely go for an initial price point lower than that currently of the iPad. It’s impossible to think they can achieve this and also make the 3DS as powerful as the developers are suggesting.

3ds could be even better then ps4, but until it’ s mario/zelda/pokemon centric i’ll never buy it.

@12 – not exactly hard to do that now is it? :P

    It’s not entirely impossible.

The PSP game out about this far into the PS2 lifespan, and it had graphics on par with the console.

People tend to forget how quickly technology can miniaturise itself, and the PS3 and 360 are only about comparable to an entry level PC nowadays.

It won’t quite be at the 360 level, but with the small screen making all details look more detailed anyway, it could certainly come close.

F**k me. I hope that it’s true, but I heard that they were close to gamecube titles.

Could be true since Ninty claimed Apple to be a real pain in the ass, so they might release an Ipad/Ipod ‘killer’

  17. Bulk Slash

Complete bullshit, there’s no way it will come close to matching Xbox 360/PS3 even if it’s the size of the DS LL and has the battery life of an hour.

I could easily see it being equivalent to the Xbox 1, as plenty of mobile GPUs have shader pipelines now and are capable of decent 3D graphics at SD resolutions.

These claims are probably true, it’s obviously much easier to render good graphics to lower resolution screens.

Xbox 360 / PS3 graphics on a Nintendo handheld? Don’t make me laugh.
Sure, high tier HD graphics can be done on a handheld but not a Nintendo handheld. They always use the cheapest and safest components to make their hardware most cost effective.

To be honest, Nintendo have proved time and again that graphics aren’t important to their absurdly large audience. As long as it looks a bit better people will be happy either way. Just hope they have a higher quality control than the Wii though, lots of games seem to have similar graphics bugs which leads me to think it could be down to the wii rather than the games.

It’ll be of similar quality to the original iPhone or thereabouts. The power draw of chip like Xenos – even at a stupidly low fabrication process – would be stupidly immense!

  22. Tallon 4

@21: Nintendo will buy great volumes so the price is not the problem. The real problem is, how long will the battery last with so much horsepower.

2 screens(1 touchscreen), 3d, 2 cameras, powerful, buttons, analog, ds compatibility, rumble, accelerator and many more…
How much will 3ds cost? :|

  24. Freek

Blatently bullshit. Nintendo never builds in more hardware capability then it needs and strives to keep the costs as low as possible.
A handheld with PS3/Xbox360 level of graphics does not fitt into that philosophy at all. Does a handheld even need that at all? Small screen, simpeler games suitable for on the go gaming. I doubt it makes sense for any company to have it be that powerfull.

  25. hitnrun

Actually, it isn’t that crazy, because PS3 and Xbox are limited by HDTV resolutions, which despite all the hype are downright ancient by tech standards.

The 3DS is also four years more advanced in its specs. Can it match the 360 and PS3? No, not on a mass-market, Nintendo-priced handheld. Close? I doubt it. But certainly it could look “current gen.” Which is more than we can say for another Nintendo system!

  26. Freek

That comic is rather nonsensical, since an HD TV is about more then just resolution. Color depth, refresh rate and also the size of the thing all work together to generate an impressive image.

What about battery life and controls? I’m not so bothered about the quality on display if the battery life is crap. Anyway, I’ll believe it when i see it

    not happening

  29. Bloodyghost

It is possible, and it can be done, but is it going to happen?Well we can only guess.
Remember that lower screen = lower resolution = less power to bring detail on to it. Again possible but is it plausible?
