PS3 3D Firmware update coming June 10

ps33d

Sony’s announced in Japan overnight that Firmware 3.20 for PS3, which supports the option of going 3D, will release on June 10. Basically put: you’re going to get the “wow factor” next Friday.

The first games to support the service will be Wipeout HD, Super Stardust HD and Pain, the latter of which was confirmed to get 3D support over the weekend, although it will need ¥300 to be unlocked for new and old owners of the game if bought in Japan.

Motorstorm: Pacific Rift will also support the feature, although only in demo form for now. That will be included with sales of PS3 and 3D Bravia TVs when the sets go on sale this summer. More details on that here.

Sony further added that support for 3DBD video playback will be coming by the end of the year.

The June 10 launch for the Firmware was previously speculated during GDC back in March.

Thanks, Andriasang.

Before E3? Does this mean they’ll be no surprise/feature enhancements in the firmware? Because surely they’d be detailed at E3 if there were.

I can’t believe they’d release two firmware’s in the space of five days. Not even Sony are that stupid.

@ Razor

I’ve heard rumours of a re-design of the XMB and obviously PSN premium service (including background downloading of future firmware updates). I’m sure there will be lots of surprises at E3 imo.

Yeah, from what I’m hearing they’re about to raise the entire PSN network up several notches. I doubt they’ll change the XMB much, as everyone seems happy with it (and it’s won a fair few awards) but I can see it being tweaked to put more emphasis on social features.

I also think we’ll see a revised in-game XMB, which features just the items you can actually tweak, with hopefully some added functionality and speed. I’d love it if they could get in-game music working for every game for example.

I agree that it seems that their will be talk of new features and a XMB revision at E3 along with the details on PSNpremium, but I can’t see them dropping a firmware that soon after 3.20 the previous week…

I’m guessing E3 will be the official annoucement of the core features that will make up O/S 4.0 (XGC etc ) in or around September 2010.

PSNpremium will be made up of a music streaming service, giving access to demos and psn titles monthly and warrenty cover to your machine. Cool little extras that will not alienate the core users who are happy with basic package

ofcourse, this is just my view on the subject but it does seem logical ! Thanks

Firmware 3.20? The already released firmware 3.30 supports 3D, only the games will be released on june 10.

@5
3.30 prepared the PS3 for 3D stuff etc.

I assume its a typo, it will probably be 3.40 or 3.50.

- UPDATE – Nope! Sony tells us the June 10 date is for Japan only, with North American & PAL details to come “shortly”.

The official feature list from firmware 3.30 states:
“3D stereoscopic games are now supported. At the time of the system software release, there are no 3D stereoscopic games available for the PlayStation 3 system. The release of 3D stereoscopic games will be announced at a later date. If the TV in use supports 3D stereoscopic display, the screen from which you can set the TV size will be displayed when adjusting the video output settings. Follow the on-screen instructions to adjust the settings.”

To me, this sounds like full support for 3D games.

How exactly is this 3D feature doing to work? This is just software. I thought the REAL 3D experience required HDMI 1.4 or something like that…?

HDMI 1.3 does have plenty enough bandwidth for the whole 3D shizzle.

Seems a bit odd have the rest of the PSN community not been on 3.30 for a month our 2 now???

So we can expect our PS3′s to break on June 10th then. :P Seriously though, I really do hope this works off the bat. However, I won’t be buying a 3DTV for a good while.

I would like to inform you about this article: http://www.4news.it/sony-annuncia-il-lancio-dei-contenuti-3d-per-il-10-giugno-2010-sul-psn.php

Sony Playstation Entertainment Japan has published the official announcement and the 3D feature has been insert in the 3.20 firmware update in 22th april.

Then the 10th June it is only the 3D games downloadable from PSN Store.

I do wish they’d pull their finger out and encourage third party devs to develop… oooooh… spotify, last.fm, 4od and the like.

this can’t be true, think with me guys:

- fw 3.20 can’t be released if there is alrady 3.30

- it should be released during E3 not before

- 3D is already supported and I don’t think that it works like every new 3D game need new fw version

- source of this message was (logically) in japanese language, so I’m betting on wrong translation

By my opinion, they want to say that will be released some 3D games and firmware 3.20 is required to playing them.

There was a report (probably on this very site) that stated that 3.3 (which was released a couple of weeks ago) added 3D for games and that 3D for movies would come with 3.4 sometime in June.

No, last update was just to prepare for 3D games, this update actually adds the feature. It was always stated that for movies it would come later in the year.
