Yeah, calling Freeman a character is a little far-fetched. Not a lot more to him than a pair of boots for the player to step into.

Freeman has no personality and is literally a blank slate how can you call him a character let alone BEST character?

Mario, Link, Master Chief, Lemmings all have zero personality aswell and half of them dont talk!!

In my opinion he’s the most unique character I’ve ever played. He never talks, yet the way people react to him gives him his great character. It’s not him as a person that creates his personality, but the people around him.

This award wasn’t called “Greatest video game character personality”, its called “Greatest video game character”, which means it’s there acts and how people react to them not necessarily there personality.

The thing about Freeman is that he speaks through you, you find out things about him from everyone else and your imagination Your not forced onto him being some ex-marine or SAS guy, hes a scientist in one crazy ass world as hes learned to get along with that world just like the player

Whats the difference between Freeman, Issac Clark, The Rookie (in both GhostBusters and ODST), Link and every other mute character? …There is none!

“Silent protagonist” – Freeman is basically akin to Claude from GTA3, Crono or Link.

HalfLife games are fucking epic, but Him as number ONE character? umm.. nehh

All those other characters you just mentioned, didn’t come close to the presence that Gordon Freeman had when people reacted to him. That’s the difference.

how so ? take a suikoden game , the protagonist is mostly silent , and yet he becomes the epic leader of an army , and usually owner of a big castle .

The only real difference between gordon and most of the other mute guys would be popularity of the half life franchise .

Seems more to me , like an “award” and ode to Half life , than the character genuinely being that awesome .

that’s because ODST or DS had practically zero story compared to HL. they were the exact same type of protagonist though.

Wow, this list is a fucking joke. Gordon Freeman? Seriously? If i take a piece of wood, draw a face on it and talk with it like it’s some kind of person the wood won’t be a character. Same goes for Mario, Link, probably every single Nintendo “character”, and of course: Master Chief.

I gotta agree though, that list is a joke. How are characters like Brucie from GTAIV (I hated him so much!) so high up when characters like Leon Kennedy are so far down?

But then again, there’s no way people will ever agree on who’s the best video game character. And even if it was left down to the people’s choice, you know we would just be seeing Master Chief up there and super hyped up shit like that.
