Rumor: Rock Band 3 features Keytar

keytar

Rumor has it that the keyboard icon that folks saw at the end of the Green Day: Rock Band demo for Rock Band 3 is not for a keyboard but a keytar.

Yeah, our mouths hit the fucking floor too, and not in a good way.

According to a source close to ArsTechnica, the “keytar-like instrument” is being created by Mad Catz, which is no surprise considering it signed a new deal for just such a thing back in April.

Apparently, Mad Catz is to offer different bundles with different combination of instruments available, some even exclusive to certain retailers. What this means, is if you already have the guitars, you can buy a bundle with only drums and so on.

The source also told Ars that the game itself is to include a “pro” mode that requires “proper technique, and may lead to actual skills on guitars and bass”.

Yesterday, when the keyboard icon tease hit the net, we contacted MTV Games and were told to “stay tuned for news about Rock Band 3 at E3″.

Today, we were told the same thing when we inquired about the keytar.

Still, it’s a rumor for now, but if it comes true, expect more Devo in RB3.

Lame, but makes sense for a gameplay tool, as it’s something you can just hold, like the guitar peripherals.
The drums are already the expensive bitt, they probably don’t want to another big thing.

If the functionality doesn’t require it to be held sideways then no doubt Logitech will step up and make some riddicoulsly expensive keyboard accessory.

hope EA can find the screws they just lost, (my thoughts) keytar simply don’t work with the aesthetic of rockband as a game, and neither with the looks of the bands that use keyboards, don’t give us the thousands of keys but at least the half of them in a mini esque keyboard, i prefer that rather than a keytar

Seems to me that the stregnth of music games are two fold. One being the songs themself. Gotta be big name bands/acts and have to be well programed to play fun. Secondly being the social aspects of the game. I have music game parties often. Everyone gets in on it and has a good time.

If the games are made tougher/more complicated then some of that casualness that draws people in is lost. My point? Simple Keyboards would work great. A keytar? Maybe not so much. Also the so called increase in difficulty, requiring “skill” to play? I don’t think so.

That would be, um, real music. Sorry, but again this is possed to be about fun. And not making things needlessly complicated. I notice from time to time esp in new dlc songs that the rythms don’t always make sense. My son counters by saying sure, but it is more challanging to play. I think that is is the wrong idea. And wrong direction.

But as a game genre I figure the well of ideas has run dry. The basic formula works, doesn’t need to be tweaked much(just refined, maybe expanded).

And again once you get past the new bells and whistles it comes back down to playing music you enjoy with your friends.

Kinda concerned about RB3 now.

And I play a ton of music games. (drums/vocal)(mostly).

hmm, well i really want some “realistic simulation” in RB3 like the game could teach me how to play drums, bass, guitarr, even vocals, but as an “expert” option, i oftenly play with my mates and my friends “jhonny, jack and josé”, so the most we can play is at medium, but is a lot of fun, if the “realistic simulation” came from easy all the way to expert well, i really hope that when i finish the game in expert the platinum thropy will be a sign in into Julliard or a contract with warner or something like that, think about it EA, at least me, I want to PLAY when i wanna play and if i want to learn guitar or whatever the instrument well, i can activate it, like having a burnout and a gran turismo in the same package but not at the same time, it just doesn’t work

Ewwwww Keytard…..I played one in a band in the 80′s, was fun to get out from behind the board every once in awhile. Isn’t a Keytard just a Guitard painted like a Keytard in RB???

I had no idea what a ‘keytar’ was, so I Google image-searched for one and it returned me a picture of a woman playing one. With no pants on.
