MUBI streaming service coming to PS3

SCEE’s announced a partnership with movie streaming service MUBI, bringing the service to PlayStation 3.
MUBI will allow you to stream movies that aren’t in the mainstream arena, with stuff from Tarantino, the Coen brothers, Kubrick and more on offer, as well as international films. No Bruckheimer for you, then.
The key message being sent across for the service is “quality over quantity”, compared to PS3′s video delivery system.
“You’ll find undistributed festival gems ripe for your discovery, your favorite recent independent and art-house releases. Names like the Coen brothers, Godard, Kitano, Almodóvar, Tarantino, and Van Sant are some we’ll bring home to you,” it says in a post on the EU PS Blog.
“Palm d’Or winners and simply films we think should have won awards. But that’s not all. We’ll bring you exclusive online premieres, collaborations with international film festivals, and retrospectives of some of the best cinema the world has ever seen.”
There are shots of how the service works in the link above. A video of it is below.

I would be more interested in Sky Player. Great news for people who want to buy the films from there though.

Now, if this sort of stuff was included with the rumored Premium Service, I’d sub to it.

300-500 movies available at launch, more added weekly. Some free, some not. Either PPV or an all you can eat sub – http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/sony-reveals-mubi-timing-price-plan

Cool. I’m wondering if all the stuff on the Bravia TV’s will be on PS3 soon too. They’ve made much about their new shared network strategy, so hopefully dedicated apps for YouTube, Lovefilm, etc aren’t far away.

@8 Up until recently, LoveFilm didn’t do streaming or on demand stuff. They have now started that on their website and selected Sony Blu-ray players. It’s more than likely it will come to other devices, PS3 included.

Just been reading the comments over at the EU blog, the movies will be £3 each (or just £1 for short films) and will all be SD only to start with.
Nice idea, I’ll be interested to see the selection of films available.

Nice one Sony.
Now I can have a choice rather than most of the rubbish that comes out of Hollywood these days.

You guys have to pay per movie?
You all really need Netflix. The low end script is like 8usd/month and its unlimited streaming, and has an insane amount of Movies and TV shows.
And it includes movies delivered to your door.
And it works on your Wii, PS3 and xb360. At night we will often have three xb360s streaming movies at the same time, each of us in our own rooms.

The trouble with Netflix is it’s only available in the US.

I know, Blerk. My heart bleeds for those folks that can’t get it. It truly is amazing. If it wasn’t for sports, we wouldn’t have cable TV at all.
I wonder if a US account could activate a Euro system so that system could stream movies?

no it couldnt.
netflix is ip blocked.
Only american IPs can access it. Not only on PS or XBOX but in general.
Only thing we could do is to use a us based free proxy (who are normaly to slow for such bandwiths needed or setting up an vpn network with someone we know in us. but thats also not very useful)

Oh man, that looks too good to be true. I’d actually buy a Triple if it’s as good as it makes out.
Somehow I expect not though…
Also, what’s the film at 1.02 with the lass running away from some beast?! The Host?

Brilliant films.
Include a sub in the premium PSN package and I’ll be all over this bad boy.

I would like to see some sort of ‘playlist’ or ‘recommended’ feature with this service.
Some way of the service to recommend films for you to view. I’m pretty savy when it comes to films but i’d always like to have new experiences suggested to me.
Perhaps we could export HTTP links (ala Spotify) to share with others?

This very much appeals to the cinema elitist in me. I’d love Netflix to be in Europe, but a high quality cinema specialist offering appeals to me even more.
Looks like there will be an option to pay a flat monthly fee and watch as much as you like in addition to the pay per view model, which also appeals greatly.
