MTV: Green Day’s more familiar to “the core” than The Beatles

MTV Games GM Scott Gutherie has said that the Rock Band core audience is more familiar with Green Day than The Beatles.
Speaking with MCV, Guthrie said sales of Beatles: Rock Band were not as high as the team has hoped, and it’s expecting Green Day to fare better with 16-34 year-olds.
“We were pleased with the performance of Beatles: Rock Band but we were expecting higher sales,” he said. “Our core audience of 16 to 34-year-old males are much more familiar with Green Day music than The Beatles.
“This isn’t a band that has been around for a short period – they’ve been going 21 years. They have a great history. It is in fact a much wider audience than some people might give them credit for. Green Day probably has a much higher awareness than perhaps The Beatles did.”
The Green Day game will be compatible with Rock Band’s existing music library, and you can also export the tracks your PS3 or 360 hard drive to use with other Rock Band games – which you couldn’t do with the Beatles.
Green Day: Rock Band’s out worldwide for PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 on June 8, and Rock Band 3 will be getting its first public viewing at E3.

That’s a big, no shit! As I said back when the beatles game came out…. nobody I know gives damn about the beatles. They are 40 years in the past. Their relevance is a debate I’m not getting into, but the vast majority of people under 40 don’t care about the Beatles or old peoples music. There is NO Beatles music played on the top 100 radio stations in the country.

Most people I know don´t give shit about Greenday. They´re a bunch of assholes imo. Modern popmusic would never exist without the Beatles. What would modern popmusic be without te Beatles? What would popmusic be without Greenday? Not much different…
And… if you don´t hear the Beatles on the radio….you´re wrong. Listen carefully and you will hear that almost every great band was influenced by them.

Bull. Shit. The Beatles were huge and have had lasting impacts on all music since. Green Day haven’t really broken into popular culture (at least in the UK where you don’t hear their name on any radio stations etc.) and while they have lots of fans, no way do they have a higher awareness than The Beatles

The Beatles contribution to pop music isn’t what’s being talked about. MTV is talking about videogames.
Most people who buy Rock Band don’t know about or don’t care enough about the Beatles to buy an entire game dedicated to them. It doesn’t matter that they are one of the most important pop bands in music history. Not enough people care about the videogame based on them.
The cross over between people who like Green Day and people who like music games is probably much higher.

@4: I was commenting on no. 1. But your right that Greenday appeals to a lot off young people. Sad but true

Music is music. I think a lot of people like to label and then tie their identities to the labels.
At my age I can tell you that the Beatles may very well be one the most important bands of all time. And their libary of music is steller. That being said, I am looking forward to Greenday more then I was the Beatles.
I just enjoy their music more.
But I am a bit strange really. I listen to everything from 50′s, to today. And I mean it, I have Dragonforce right along side Tom Petty, next to Iron Maiden and Dead by Sunrise. I enjoy CCR to Cranius.
I love Music games. Own and enjoy both GH and RB.
I didn’t enjoy the Beatles RB despite loving their stuff. Was strange. I think maybe because it was too themed and singular. In that once I put the CD in, I was limited to Beatles. A time period game would have been better. If I could have played Beatles, Stones, Deep Purple, CCR, and other bands from the same time period. One band is too limiting.
As for Greenday, I can’t wait. The fact that I can import the game into my RB2 stuff means I won’t be stuck with just one song set.
Alot of people like to hate on Music games. Not sure why. In my opinion they the best thing to come out of this generation.(sure they started last gen, but matured this gen – and DLC is correctly applied in their case). I play with folks that range in age from 10/12 to 70plus. Everyone enjoys music.
Greenday, bring it on. To be honest they may very well be the last great band. With the digital ages, and the saturation of so called “indie” music I see it being very hard for any band today to go mainstream and gain the level of popularity that Greenday has achieved. I have my copy preordered.
