LBP2 was necessary due to the DLC “divide”

William Ho, director for United Front’s ModNation Racers, has said that LittleBigPlanet 2 was necessary to due to all the new changes and features.

Speaking with CVG, Ho said that the sequel should also help fix the ‘community divide’ over DLC.

“It’s hard to continually bolt on features to the same game because basically you have a divide between the people who have updated the game through purchasing download content, and those who haven’t,” he said.

“So certain features, you have to do in a sequel so that you can reset the playing field, and make all these great features that you worked so hard to put in the game accessible to the largest number of players possible.”

LBP2 was outed yesterday by Game Informer, after months of speculation, rumor, and denials by all involved.

Different sites have posted the contents of the reveal, and according to the various sources, the new title focuses less on platforming, allows you to create vehicles, puzzles, and your very own cut-scenes.

MM tweeted earlier that more details are expected from the firm Monday.

    The headline is rather erroneous. The issue isn’t the size of potential DLC, it’s the segregation of the market and diminishing returns; downloadable content can certainly be profitable, but there’s good reasons behind the GTAIV episodes or Fallout 3 content making the transition to disk.

    @4 I took out the size bit, but considering it allows you to build an entire game, not just levels, there’s no way they could continually push that through DLC. It’s too much content, and I can’t recall where I saw it exactly yesterday evening, because it literally blew up the internet, but some “source close to someone at MM” said the exact same thing – although there seems to be a “source” for everyone and everything these days, and it could just very well be the bum on the corner talking out his ass with a megaphone.

    And of course it only makes sense to eventually put something on disc (Bethesda did it with Oblivion as well)as there are some folks out there who still don’t have a toilet in their house let alone their PS3 hooked-up to the net. It’s also another way for publishers to throw three different DLC bits on a disc that cost $3 a piece and call it a GOTY edition to justify the $60 price tag.

    Spot on Steph.

    DLC is a dble edge sword. Some games(very few) I buy all that is released(like Civ Rev), and other games I will not buy at all because of the dlc that would be vital to the enjoyment of the game or vital to keeping up with the comminuty/fanbase.

    RockBand/G.Hero = great DLC.

    15usd/two maps of a FPS = terrible DLC.

    But almost any DLC will split the community between those that have it and those that don’t.

    @7 I honestly don’t buy too much DLC. One of the reasons, is funds, honestly. Granted, if I love a game enough, I will purchase items or content that will extend my experience. However $1 here, $10 there adds up and most of the time it’s usually something multiplayer anyway, which I rarely, if ever, play.

    Something like LBP I can see spending money on though, because it’s tools, skins and the like and what you create you can share. It’s no wonder there are so many people who love it – but most DLC is not like that.
