Hydrophobia is a timed exclusive; will come to PC and PSN

Dark Energy Digital bossman Pete Jones has clarified that the firm’s retail and XBL game Hydrophobia is not totally exclusive to Xbox 360.

Instead, it’s just a “timed” exclusive.

Speaking with IncGamers, Jones said that it will still be released on PC and PSN as originally announced, just a bit later.

No word on when exactly, but Jones did reveal that only the Xbox 360 version would hit retail – the PSN and PC versions will be digital only.

Planned as an three-part episodic release, each episode will last five hours and is planned for release over a 12-month period.

No date, yet, still.

Ah, 3 parts makes alot more sense for this seeing as i really cant see it work anyo other way with the 360′s size limit for digital games.

I think this could turn into something pretty amazing.

The XBLA size limit is 2GB these days. Apparently each episode will weigh in around 800MB, so taking shared content into account they could probably fit all three episodes into a single package if they really wanted.

I would think more pressing concerns would be not having finished all three episodes and being hesitant about charging £30-odd for one huge download.

I didn’t realise any of the versions were appearing on disc.

The article on this in this month’s Edge was quite interesting. A lot of the stuff within the game, including the textures, is procedurally generated – created on the fly as and when it’s needed. This keeps the file sizes down dramatically and allows them to tweak graphics on the fly – make this room wet, or rusty, or whatever.

That same article says that the engine’s been designed with the PS3 in mind too, so I’ve no doubt it’ll end up on the Playstation eventually.

Dark Energy Digital bossman Pete Jones talking to his workers and developers…

“Since PS3 and PC version can have better physics and graphics, but they are harder to work on then Xbox360, we will just postpone the two. And fuck it, all we will say to the public its just Xbox360 has timed exclusive while we work on the two.”

As far as I know, yes. I can only assume for the retail disc version. A bit like EA and the orange box. probably won’t have any say on what platform it’s released on….but times can change I s’pose.
