Analyst: Infinity Ward will be “essentially closed” after next map pack is released

Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey has said that he believes Infinity Ward will be “essentially closed” once the next map pack for Modern Warfare 2 is released.
Due to the numerous defections within the developer and all the lawsuits floating around, Hickey is under the impression that the studio will be absorbed into Activision and future work in the series will be spread out amongst the rest of its developers.
“Continued defections from [Activision's] Infinity Ward studio have created meaningful uncertainty around the future of their Call of Duty: Modern Warfare franchise,” said Hickey.
“We expect Infinity Ward studio will be essentially closed after their next map pack release, with development work on Modern Warfare 3 spread between two studios not historically tied to the franchise.”
At least two map packs were promised at the onset, with the Stimulus Pack already released to great sales.
As far as Modern Warfare 3 is concerned, Hickey predicts that it will land in stores during Q4 of Activision’s fiscal year 2011 and potentially rake-in $738M.
That figure is reasonable, considering that Modern Warfare 2 won a Guinness for making $401M in just its first 24-hours on the market.
Currently, three titles are in the works in the Call of Duty franchise.
There’s Treyarch with the oft-rumored Vietnam-centric game, slated for a reveal through the May issue of OPM; Infinity Ward was developing Modern Warfare 3; and then there’s Sledgehammer’s “innovative take” on the Call of Duty franchise that Thomas Tippl, Activision’s COO, said would “further broaden” the franchise’s audience.
So, regardless if Infinity Ward as we all know it remains intact after the next map pack or not, Activision will still be pumping out the CoD titles – just with different names on ‘em.

So, I’ve created a robot that knows how to go into my office and make me a coffee. But what if something goes wrong? What if the coffee’s in a different place, or there’s no milk? What if there’s bees in the sugar?

@7 Justin Timberlake seriously needs to shave his neck.
Also, the situation between IW and Acti has nothing to do with “screwing over PC gamers”, and if PC gamers were slighted in anyway, it is not the developer’s fault because when you are owned by a company, you promote what the company dictates.
Thus, a deal was struck with MS for promotion on Xbox 360 – that’s why you saw more commercials for it – and probably only it – on television and the internet. That in turn made more people who are not privy to the goings on in the industry to believe that the 360 version was either A) the only version, or B) the best version.
Blame it on marketing if anything, but don’t blame the developer. No one is trying to screw over anyone for any particular platform. They are more than likely happy to make money off any version no matter what. If they wanted to “screw over PC gamers”, well they would not have released it on that platform in the first place, now would they? It would have been skipped altogether.
EDIT: @9 I wish I had left it at that, honestly. Sometimes the devil perched upon my right shoulder wins out over common sense, though.

Er, well they haven’t gone anywhere as yet. But if they do, I’d imagine they’ll be going the way of EA or elsewhere within Activision. Remember EA and Activision? Those companies that make colossal amounts of money from console games?

Blackdreamhunk, it’s an awful experience to read your comments, considering you keep linking stupid youtube videos and you can’t write shit in english.
Stop this cruzade against console gamers man. I am a PC gamer myself, but I think we got enough good developers and games for PC to not trash talk people who decide to bring games to consoles.
REally, you’re either a douchebag or you got a sinister sense of humor, like Andy Kauffman.

@26 As they should. A system of rating comments wouldn’t contradict that philosophy though, in the interest of other users being able to pick out the idiots. Although, I guess that would get abused too..

I’ll stick my two cents in here. While I’ll miss the quality of the IW CoD games, I’m not sad to see them go. The group leaders were becoming arrogant and they weren’t listening to their customers. The server issue was a huge sign of that.
That said, their contribution to gaming in general and the amazing times I’ve had on CoD will not be forgotten.

I don’t know, I like BDH. He is a good read. And as much as some of you won’t agree, he often has a point. And the YouTube thing? Why not? Sometimes he links funny stuff.
Nothing on this site should be taken too seriously. And watching him debate with other readers … pricless.
Good stuff as far as I am concerned.

I guess a complete dismantling of Infinity Ward would explain why no new studio heads have been picked. Seems to me like that would be something you’d hurry if you wanted to salvage the brand.
It’s gonna be interesting to see what happens next.
@29 To be completely fair, what’s arrogant is to think that you somehow determine what a developer is going to do simply from stomping your foot on the internet. Where are we now? 14 million sold? Obviously whatever gripes people had with the game, weren’t that serious.
You really have nothing to gain by sticking with an antiquated technology. You have nothing to lose either, but clinging to the past is a cowards way of thinking. Keep in mind that dedicated servers have been the norm, virtually since the birth of multiplayer gaming.
I mean I’m sure some people would’ve loved for us to still be using switchboard operators, rather than direct phonenumbers today, but thankfully the people calling the shots didn’t listen to those guys either.
Even if the matchmaker is far from perfect, it still does the job, and it will consistently do it quicker and better once the reliability improves. That’s a huge step forward, and in my oppinon, also a nice slap to the face for those whose answer to everything, is to favor spineless complacency.
