Slim 360 for E3 debut, says Surfer Girl [Update]

surfergirl

Update: Looks like it’s a load of shit. Too bad.

Original: Someone’s claiming to be Surfer Girl. They’re also claiming that Microsoft will show its heavily-rumoured slim 360 at E3 in June.

The blogger posted this weekend:

MS will reveal a slim 360 natal bundle at one of their two (yes, two) press conferences at this year’s e3.

What’s more the 360 will be getting a subtle rebrand, with a new logo and black as the new primary colour of the console. They feel that the new system needs to be black because a white Natal wouldn’t sit well next to the typical gloss black tv.

Fuck knows if this is the real, actual Surfer Girl. The fabled industry gossiper signed off in May 2008.

As for the news being real? Tip: very likely. A reworking of 360′s form factor’s been common knowledge in chatter-circles since Microsoft announced Natal at E3 last year. Expect this to happen in LA.

@49

You’ve kinda backtracked from your original position there dude.

@48

I’ll watch all that later. I’m sure that they get an amount of creative freedom, but ultimately the sole purpose of exclusive games is to showcase the platform. From that perspective, Sony has complete control and will tell Insomniac what gets shown and how it’s to be shown.

@50

Yeh, you’re prob right.

Sounds like an announcement from Insomniac on a 360 or multiplatform title, which is great news.

I’m interested to see what they can do with the 360, although I’d definitely want Ratchet levels of quality and not something like the rubbish Resistance series.

@51 they clearly say: sony just don’t give a shit about some meetings and they give us a budget to do a game.

you will see.

@52 Resistance series yeah, rubbish, but they are 80% better then any Halo Game Fanboy :D Thats true btw.

There’s a very big difference between a ‘hands off’ approach and an ‘eyes off’ approach, Erthazus. They might let them get on with it but they will be watching what they’re doing constantly. And should at any point they be unhappy with what’s going on, you can be absolutely sure that that policy would change. That’s just business.

I would still be surprised to see Insomniac go multi, it just seems like an odd thing to happen after so long. But I’m pretty certain there are practically no surprises left in the industry at this point – if you’re in the business, you know what’s going on. If they were going multi, Sony would know about it before anyone else.

btw, about that g4tv video, at what time do they say anything about creative freedom Sony ‘re giving them? near the start of it, Amy Hennig says they have producers at Sony, and not in-house, and how they don’t have to write craploads of docs and the such… she’s talking about the way ND themselves work, that’s all.

.. actually, if she says they have producers at Sony, that means the latter do know quite a lot about ND development :)

To a cetain extent both arguements are valid, if Sony told thier companies what games to make ND would still be doing Jak and daxter games for example.

Instead they got free reign to make a new ip. But yea Sony will know exactly what will be shown at E3, Yoshida was amazed at the Uncharted 2 footage that was shown at E3 btw so maybe the developers get to choose what part of the game to show off.

@55

Apologies for the ‘dude’ reference :)

However, you do seem to have back-tracked somewhat.

“I’m quessing she means by “Insomniac Games will surprise everyone at E3 – probably even Sony”
that they will probably show R3 which it may be technicaly much superior to the previous title(which was a disappointment) and maybe a little bit more advanced than most titles we’ve seen so far that even Sony would be surprised.”

This, although slightly ambiguous, seems to suggest that Sony would be surprised at how technically proficient R3 is. Yet Sony would already know this, if you agreed that they’d seen it. So you are, I presume (correct me if I’m wrong), suggesting Sony won’t have seen it, or enough of it to know of its technical merits?

“Blerk they know how the game is pretty much what i’m saying here is that they(Sony) don’t know right now what they will present exactly about the game and how people will recieve it(from the audience)not before around the days of the event.Right now they might have on schedule that Insomniac may present R3 nothing more.They don’t know exactly what they will present(exact scenes,gameplay e.t.c) not before around these days
IF the audience goes all cheering with what they might see then it would be “probably” a surprise for Sony too since last time with R2 that wasn’t the case”

Whereas here you talk about Sony being surprised by audience reaction, with no mention of your above point.

@60 These are all coming together as a surprise for Sony.That i didn’t post everything i have to say in one comment doesn’t mean that i backtracked.

“They know the game how is pretty much” i’m implying that they know how the game is pretty much now,not exactly the final build and presentation that they are going to show.If Sony have seen a build of R3 and it is approved then it’s up to Inscomniac if they want to “surprise” even Sony improving that build and keep it under wraps from everyone until the event….and by event do not take it literally the last second of Sony’s event at E3.

There are many games that go in the schedule for presentation by many developers even a few hours before their exact event.

I haven’t said that Sony haven’t seen R3 at all but i haven’t said that they have seen exactly what is going to be showed which this might be a surprise for them for many reasons …reception of the game,presentation of the game,even things in the game they might haven’t seen themselves (like a scene or two where they are going to show physics or effects in the game that they didn’t show to anyone before)

Sony was surprised with Uncharted 2 presentation at E3 because they didn’t seen before the days of the event the “helicopter scene” at all…

Well, so they said. Whether we actually believe that or not is another thing altogether.

@61

I take your point, but I still don’t buy into it.

These presentations are rehearsed endlessly. Planned down to the minutest detail. Sony knows what is going to be shown, how long it’s going to take etc.

The ‘helicopter scene’ you refer to would have been approved by somebody at Sony, in order for it to go into the presentation. I presume when you say “Sony” was surprised by its inclusion you mean Jack Tretton (or, whoever did the presentation that year)? He may very well have been surprised because he probably hasn’t seen anything. But someone at Sony approved that content; it wasn’t included at the whim of the developer.

@67 – As far as I’m aware the Slim 360 is true. It’s a really old rumour. As I said in the piece, it was widely talked about last year.

We’ll see, anyway. I’ll have some money on it, if you like. Tenner? :)

@ Patrick, Yeah I reckon a Slim 360 is well on. Slim + Natal + a shiny new look, and a cheaper price, fits the Wii crowd perfectly, dun it.

And they’ll do a Sony by making the thing cheaper to manufacture. Its win win.

M$ saw how Sony got a boost in sales from the PS3 slim. Its a no brainer that a 360 slim will be released soon too. A natal bundle or a built in wifi system would be nice and would sell another 5 million quite easily.

I’d be interested in a slim 360 if it was smaller/quieter/less power hungry/had a bigger HDD. I traded my fatty PS2 for a thinny PS2 for very similar reasons.

@72 i think i’d do the same, my xbox is one noisy son of a bitch, with some clever foresight i could sell it on ebay early before everyone knows about the slim, i could live a couple of months without an xbox….all for the sake of 5 quid probably :)

@ 71: Whilst you’re not wrong and the success of the PS3 Slim is without question a big factor, your timelines don’t match up. MS wouldn’t have had enough time to concept and push out a new hardware SKU in just twelve months (there are other clues, too). Therefore, they just would’ve decided to make the Slim in, ooh – early ’08, I’d say.

A slim 360 to tie in with Halo Reach sounds common sense to me, They would sell quite a lot of them if they did that.

@71 and 74

The PS2 set the trend for slimlining, and I’d expect a slim model to be a standard feature of pretty much every consoles lifecycle.

Except the Wii of course. Nintendo sit far too high up on their money mountain to care what the rest of the world are doing ;p

As GW said, if a 360 slim is due out this year then development would have had to have started in ’08 at the latest.

I want 360 slim, because the console it self i think is disaster. Noisy and RROD.

If they will rid of that RROD thing, it’s going to be quieter and less power hungry, i would buy it instantly. Games like Alan Wake and Gears 3 are great too, even if i can borrow 360 from my friend (what i did with Gears 2) i still want it and if Natal works and works with new Metal Gear game :D woosh…
