Slim 360 for E3 debut, says Surfer Girl [Update]

Monday, 26 April 2010 10:20 GMT By Patrick Garratt

Update: Looks like it’s a load of shit. Too bad.

Original: Someone’s claiming to be Surfer Girl. They’re also claiming that Microsoft will show its heavily-rumoured slim 360 at E3 in June.

The blogger posted this weekend:

MS will reveal a slim 360 natal bundle at one of their two (yes, two) press conferences at this year’s e3.

What’s more the 360 will be getting a subtle rebrand, with a new logo and black as the new primary colour of the console. They feel that the new system needs to be black because a white Natal wouldn’t sit well next to the typical gloss black tv.

Fuck knows if this is the real, actual Surfer Girl. The fabled industry gossiper signed off in May 2008.

As for the news being real? Tip: very likely. A reworking of 360′s form factor’s been common knowledge in chatter-circles since Microsoft announced Natal at E3 last year. Expect this to happen in LA.

  3. Rudderless

If true – and I’m certain it will be – it’s pretty much the most obvious news ever. Slim was always going to happen, as was a rebrand.

Two conferences makes sense, too – one for Natal, and one that doesn’t piss off the hardcore. Isn’t Nintendo having two as well?

  4. NGCes26294BIV

Surfer Girl needs a tidier URL. (I almost wrote titier… Freudian slip?)

    #4 5 years ago
  5. Patrick Garratt

It may be bollocks. It’s well-punctuated bollocks, though. And as far as I’m aware MS is going to show Slim at the show.

    #5 5 years ago
  6. DJ Deathstar

Probably bigger news in that link

And Natal? Let’s just say you’ll probably be both very surprised and very pleased by one of the games revealed… what is it?

Might Get Shot if I were to tell.

With the MGS highlighted, MGS Rising to be a Natal and Move game??? How did everyone miss that

Yes, I have read it, thanking you very much.

The only hint in the link as to your purported Metal Gear claim is the highlighted ‘MGS’. Whilst plausible that she’s refering to Metal Gear, she could be refering to a game simply from Microsoft Game Studios.

    #17 5 years ago
  18. Erthazus

I think Sony is in bi-i-i-ig trouble if they will announce new Slim version and rebrand in US. Because they will have enough time to promote it with REACH, Gears Of War 3 at Gamescom and TGS.

So yeah, probably the biggest Xbox 360 YEAR. But i’m more interested in games.

***The only hint in the link as to your purported Metal Gear claim is the highlighted ‘MGS’. Whilst plausible that she’s refering to Metal Gear, she could be refering to a game simply from Microsoft Game Studios.***

They probably will show Metal Gear Solid: Rising with Natal and it will be compatible with Playstation Move too. So it’s basically PR move. I am sure for 100% that it is not a new MGS game.

  19. Blerk

Her next post seems to imply that it’ll be a port of Metal Gear Solid Touch.

    #19 5 years ago
  20. Erthazus

    So basically:

    1) Xbox 360 SLIM

    2) Rebrand Xbox logo

    3) Metal Geat Solid: Rising Natal Demo

    4) Insomniac will show new game at Xbox 360 press conference (It’s going to be Exclusive game OR multiplatform) Ted Price will slap Microsoft exec ass.

  29. zoopdeloop

Didn’t Insomniac denied going multiplatform for the time being a while back but at some point they may go multiplatform?.

I’m quessing she means by “Insomniac Games will surprise everyone at E3 – probably even Sony”
that they will probably show R3 which it may be technicaly much superior to the previous title(which was a disappointment) and maybe a little bit more advanced than most titles we’ve seen so far that even Sony would be surprised.

One thing is for sure this E3 will be very interesting.Microsoft already hints at some very good stuff including a few things that they hold under wraps while Sony haven’t hinted anything “BIG” but i’m guessing they hold almost everything they’ve got for this year tightly under wraps to surprise us

    #29 5 years ago
  30. Benjo1981

You don’t think that Sony knows about R3 and have seen it? That E3 will be the first time that Sony have seen R3?

    That’s absurd.

R3 is a Sony exclusive, do you really think Sony would let Insomniac show it off having not seen it?

    #30 5 years ago
  31. Erthazus

@30 actually that possible, some companies don’t want to show something. They can give a glimpse to Sony of what they will show. But thats it.

Sony and Insomniac have a deep relationships together since PS1 era and Insomniac just keep it for themself just to protect the demo or trailer for leaks. Thats possible and it’s not the first time Companies do that to protect it’s announcement.

Sony’s work to know that R3 is exclusive to them, thats what they need to know.

    #31 5 years ago
  32. Benjo1981

Sorry, I don’t buy it. Sony needs to know more than that a game is exclusive to them to allow a devoloper to show it at an E3 conference (one of the main focal points of the gaming calender) without them being fully aware of what is going to be shown…regardless of who they are and how close their relationship is.

    #32 5 years ago
  33. zoopdeloop

@30 It depends…Sony didn’t see the exact same built of U2 from Naughty Dog with the exact scenes before around E3 themselves.
Off course Sony have seen R3 and how it may look like…but surprises also come from the whole presentation which the developer Insomniac is only in charge and has nothing to do with Sony

    #33 5 years ago
  34. Blerk

Get away. They’ll practically have Sony breathing down their necks.

    #34 5 years ago
  35. Benjo1981

Well, if that’s the way Sony strategises their E3, then..more fool them. To me, that sounds absolutely absurd.

Tbh, I’m not buying it still. For Sony to go into such a big conference without full knowledge of exactly what is being shown just seems reckless and disorganised.

I’m almost certain that these things are intensely scripted events with full knowledge of every stage of the conference and what is being shown. A bad presentation not only hurts the game being shown but also Sony, especially as it’s an exclusive.

I’d be more inclined to agree if it was multi-platform, but Sony has too much invested in exclusives to let such a thing happen.

    #35 5 years ago
  36. cookiejar

Whatever big game is in development for the PS3, and whatever they have ready to show at the presser, Sony has seen. Whoever says otherwise is mad. If that was true, they could just play a video of Rick Astley doing the ‘Helicopter’ with Sony standing there shocked.

It could well be Insomniac are putting a game out for someone else, or it could be a load of tosh all together.

    #36 5 years ago
  37. Gadzooks!

    “Get away.”

Slightly off topic but I fucking love that you used this phrase!

    #37 5 years ago
  38. Erthazus

@35 Thats not absurd. They didn’t know about Naughty Dog presentation at all for example. Sony strategy is to give freedom to first party and second party. Thats why they have always awesome games compared to others. They never look at the companies and start doing the work with them. They just let companies to decide what they want.

Sony just give First Party or second party developer like Insomniac Budget and they make a game at the end of the day Sony will come and ask them: Can you show us the game?
    Insomniac: Yes we can
They show them build and thats it. But how 1st or 2nd party will present the product depends only on developers choice. They need to tell just how much the time they will spend on it.

that was always since 1st party and that was a success for Sony all the time.

    #38 5 years ago
  39. zoopdeloop

    Pretty much what Erthazus says.
surprise for Sony from Inscomniac would be the exact presentation of their game and the reception from people who would see it…which wasn’t good at all from their previous Resistance game.
If Insomniac surprises everyone say for example with R3 then Sony would be surprised too from the reception

    #39 5 years ago
  40. Benjo1981

Rubbish. 1st party, as well as 2nd party, developers pitch their games just like everyone else. Sony does not give them free reign to do whatever they please.

And I’m certain they don’t give them free reign to present what the hell they please at E3 conferences.

    #40 5 years ago
  41. Benjo1981

Freedom of development (which is what Erthazus is talking about) and the reception of a game, are two very different things.

Of course Sony, nor Insomniac, know how the game will be received, so both will be surprised (given a narrow reading of ‘surprise’) because you can’t know how people will take the game…until they see it.

What I’m denying is that Sony doesn’t know EXACTLY what is going to be shown and HOW it is going to be presented.

    #41 5 years ago
  42. Erthazus

@40 you need me to give you Naughty Dog videos when they say clearly that Sony don’t give a fuck about what they do? It is from Writer and Designer words.

Or… you need me to give you the same shit from Santa Monica?

You started playing at 7th gen consoles? Sony do that since PS1 ERA. It’s Shuhei Yoshida strategy with 1st party companies. It was that way always. ALWAYS.

    #42 5 years ago
  43. Blerk

I’m inclined to agree. What kind of company would ever risk giving a pot of cash to anyone and then letting them do what they wanted with it? They wouldn’t do that even with an internal studio. And the E3 press conference is their biggest moment in the limelight of the whole year – to say that Sony don’t 110% know exactly what is going to happen down to the last second is just nonsense.

    #43 5 years ago
  44. Benjo1981

Go on then, give me the links.

    #44 5 years ago
  45. Erthazus

@41 i think they saw the build and give presentation to Insomniac i’m sure for that. Ok… We will see, but thats what Surfer girl tell. It will surprise even Sony.

Maybe it’s a sarcasm or maybe it’s truth. No one knows.

    #45 5 years ago
  46. Benjo1981

Or, maybe it’s got nothing at all to do with R3. Insomniac have been hinting at doing a multi-plat game so THAT would surprise Sony.

    #46 5 years ago
  47. DaMan

I remember it clear as day how David Jaffe said his game was canned because Phil Harrison doubted it’ll be commercially successful. it’s simply laughable to say they have no idea what’s going on in the studio they own.

and Shuhei Yoshida wasn’t even the president of SCE in the PS1 era.

    #47 5 years ago
  48. Erthazus

    Thats just an example.

+ if they are going multiplat, Sony will know this for 100% Sony funding Insomniac for a long, long time and they are friends with Ted Price so probably Sony know about it. Somehow but will know about it.

@43 they know about build and product. But they give absolute freedom to first parties Thats Shuhei vision of doing things right.
About R3. Yes, they know about the build and Sony probably said what time frame Insomniac have to show it’s product.
Sony is known for leaks so probably Insomniac know what to show and Sony don’t bothers with it.

Surfer Girls say too much since 2008 about Insomniac so she have something to do with Insomniac more or less and i think she is trying to say that: What Insomniac will show will surprise YOU, ME and even SONY

ORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR… It will surprise how Insomniac showed a good game at Microsoft E3 press conference.

    #48 5 years ago
  49. zoopdeloop

Blerk they know how the game is pretty much what i’m saying here is that they(Sony) don’t know right now what they will present exactly about the game and how people will recieve it(from the audience)not before around the days of the event.Right now they might have on schedule that Insomniac may present R3 nothing more. They don’t know exactly what they will present(exact scenes, gameplay e.t.c) not before around these days
IF the audience goes all cheering with what they might see then it would be “probably” a surprise for Sony too since last time with R2 that wasn’t the case

    #49 5 years ago
  50. Blerk

@46, somehow I doubt even that would be a surprise to them.

    #50 5 years ago
  51. Benjo1981

You’ve kinda backtracked from your original position there dude.

I’ll watch all that later. I’m sure that they get an amount of creative freedom, but ultimately the sole purpose of exclusive games is to showcase the platform. From that perspective, Sony has complete control and will tell Insomniac what gets shown and how it’s to be shown.

    Yeh, you’re prob right.

    #51 5 years ago
  52. Gadzooks!

Sounds like an announcement from Insomniac on a 360 or multiplatform title, which is great news.

I’m interested to see what they can do with the 360, although I’d definitely want Ratchet levels of quality and not something like the rubbish Resistance series.

    #52 5 years ago

@51 they clearly say: sony just don’t give a shit about some meetings and they give us a budget to do a game.

There’s a very big difference between a ‘hands off’ approach and an ‘eyes off’ approach, Erthazus. They might let them get on with it but they will be watching what they’re doing constantly. And should at any point they be unhappy with what’s going on, you can be absolutely sure that that policy would change. That’s just business.

I would still be surprised to see Insomniac go multi, it just seems like an odd thing to happen after so long. But I’m pretty certain there are practically no surprises left in the industry at this point – if you’re in the business, you know what’s going on. If they were going multi, Sony would know about it before anyone else.

Blerk i also believe they might go multi at some point but not right now.

btw, about that g4tv video, at what time do they say anything about creative freedom Sony ‘re giving them? near the start of it, Amy Hennig says they have producers at Sony, and not in-house, and how they don’t have to write craploads of docs and the such… she’s talking about the way ND themselves work, that’s all.

.. actually, if she says they have producers at Sony, that means the latter do know quite a lot about ND development :)

    #58 5 years ago
  59. The Hindle

To a cetain extent both arguements are valid, if Sony told thier companies what games to make ND would still be doing Jak and daxter games for example.

Instead they got free reign to make a new ip. But yea Sony will know exactly what will be shown at E3, Yoshida was amazed at the Uncharted 2 footage that was shown at E3 btw so maybe the developers get to choose what part of the game to show off.

Apologies for the ‘dude’ reference :)

However, you do seem to have back-tracked somewhat.

“I’m quessing she means by “Insomniac Games will surprise everyone at E3 – probably even Sony”
that they will probably show R3 which it may be technicaly much superior to the previous title(which was a disappointment) and maybe a little bit more advanced than most titles we’ve seen so far that even Sony would be surprised.”

This, although slightly ambiguous, seems to suggest that Sony would be surprised at how technically proficient R3 is. Yet Sony would already know this, if you agreed that they’d seen it. So you are, I presume (correct me if I’m wrong), suggesting Sony won’t have seen it, or enough of it to know of its technical merits?

“Blerk they know how the game is pretty much what i’m saying here is that they(Sony) don’t know right now what they will present exactly about the game and how people will recieve it(from the audience)not before around the days of the event.Right now they might have on schedule that Insomniac may present R3 nothing more. They don’t know exactly what they will present(exact scenes, gameplay e.t.c) not before around these days
IF the audience goes all cheering with what they might see then it would be “probably” a surprise for Sony too since last time with R2 that wasn’t the case”

Whereas here you talk about Sony being surprised by audience reaction, with no mention of your above point.

    #60 5 years ago
  61. zoopdeloop

@60 These are all coming together as a surprise for Sony. That i didn’t post everything i have to say in one comment doesn’t mean that i backtracked.

“They know the game how is pretty much” i’m implying that they know how the game is pretty much now,not exactly the final build and presentation that they are going to show.If Sony have seen a build of R3 and it is approved then it’s up to Inscomniac if they want to “surprise” even Sony improving that build and keep it under wraps from everyone until the event….and by event do not take it literally the last second of Sony’s event at E3.

There are many games that go in the schedule for presentation by many developers even a few hours before their exact event.

I haven’t said that Sony haven’t seen R3 at all but i haven’t said that they have seen exactly what is going to be showed which this might be a surprise for them for many reasons …reception of the game, presentation of the game, even things in the game they might haven’t seen themselves (like a scene or two where they are going to show physics or effects in the game that they didn’t show to anyone before)

Sony was surprised with Uncharted 2 presentation at E3 because they didn’t seen before the days of the event the “helicopter scene” at all…

    #61 5 years ago
  62. Blerk

Well, so they said. Whether we actually believe that or not is another thing altogether.

    #62 5 years ago
  63. Benjo1981

I take your point, but I still don’t buy into it.

These presentations are rehearsed endlessly. Planned down to the minutest detail. Sony knows what is going to be shown, how long it’s going to take etc.

The ‘helicopter scene’ you refer to would have been approved by somebody at Sony, in order for it to go into the presentation. I presume when you say “Sony” was surprised by its inclusion you mean Jack Tretton (or, whoever did the presentation that year)? He may very well have been surprised because he probably hasn’t seen anything. But someone at Sony approved that content; it wasn’t included at the whim of the developer.

@67 – As far as I’m aware the Slim 360 is true. It’s a really old rumour. As I said in the piece, it was widely talked about last year.

We’ll see, anyway. I’ll have some money on it, if you like. Tenner? :)

  70. cookiejar

@ Patrick, Yeah I reckon a Slim 360 is well on. Slim + Natal + a shiny new look, and a cheaper price, fits the Wii crowd perfectly, dun it.

And they’ll do a Sony by making the thing cheaper to manufacture. Its win win.

    #70 5 years ago
  71. theevilaires

M$ saw how Sony got a boost in sales from the PS3 slim. Its a no brainer that a 360 slim will be released soon too. A natal bundle or a built in wifi system would be nice and would sell another 5 million quite easily.

    #71 5 years ago
  72. Blerk

I’d be interested in a slim 360 if it was smaller/quieter/less power hungry/had a bigger HDD. I traded my fatty PS2 for a thinny PS2 for very similar reasons.

    #72 5 years ago
  73. mington

@72 i think i’d do the same, my xbox is one noisy son of a bitch, with some clever foresight i could sell it on ebay early before everyone knows about the slim, i could live a couple of months without an xbox….all for the sake of 5 quid probably :)

    #73 5 years ago
  74. Gheritt White

@ 71: Whilst you’re not wrong and the success of the PS3 Slim is without question a big factor, your timelines don’t match up. MS wouldn’t have had enough time to concept and push out a new hardware SKU in just twelve months (there are other clues, too). Therefore, they just would’ve decided to make the Slim in, ooh – early ’08, I’d say.

    #74 5 years ago
  75. The Hindle

A slim 360 to tie in with Halo Reach sounds common sense to me, They would sell quite a lot of them if they did that.

    #75 5 years ago
  76. Gadzooks!

    @71 and 74

The PS2 set the trend for slimlining, and I’d expect a slim model to be a standard feature of pretty much every consoles lifecycle.

Except the Wii of course. Nintendo sit far too high up on their money mountain to care what the rest of the world are doing ;p

As GW said, if a 360 slim is due out this year then development would have had to have started in ’08 at the latest.

    #76 5 years ago
  77. Dr.Ghettoblaster

I’d love a 360 slim, but have no interest in Natal. Hope they sell em seperately (if announced).

    #77 5 years ago
  78. Erthazus

I want 360 slim, because the console it self i think is disaster. Noisy and RROD.

If they will rid of that RROD thing, it’s going to be quieter and less power hungry, i would buy it instantly. Games like Alan Wake and Gears 3 are great too, even if i can borrow 360 from my friend (what i did with Gears 2) i still want it and if Natal works and works with new Metal Gear game :D woosh…
