New Sledgehammer CoD title “will broaden the audience”, says Activision

Activision COO Thomas Tippl has said that the upcoming Call of Duty title from upstart Sledgehammer Games will “broaden the audience”.
Speaking with the LA Times, Tippl said the studio – headed by ex-Visceral heads Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey – will bring an “innovative take” on the series.
He also reiterated, despite the firings of ex-studio bosses Vince Zampella and Jason West nearly two months ago, what Activision had previously said, by stating that Infinity Ward remains “central” to the Call of Duty franchise.
“Today, we have three studios working on Call of Duty,” said Tippl. “We have Infinity Ward, which made Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Then we have Treyarch, which will be releasing a Call of Duty game in the fall of 2010. Treyarch also developed Call of Duty: World at War and Call of Duty 3.
“And, most recently, we’ve added Sledgehammer in the Bay Area. We haven’t yet announced the content of their game, but it’s going to be an innovative take that will further broaden the audience for Call of Duty.”
Not much has actually been said of the Sledgehammer CoD since its announcement in March other than it will be in the action-adventure genre, suggesting it may move away as a first-person shooter.

Lawl. It sounds interesting though, even if action adventure could mean pretty much anything.
It’s also pretty ironic that the guys who did Dead Space for EA are gonna be doing a CoD revamp for Activision, especially considering the circumstances.
@12 Yeah, that makes you look real sane, there.

I’d lay money on this requiring a peripheral (like a light-gun, maybe) and retailing at £100.
Every possibility this would take into account Natal and Move support.

Yeah but the scary thing is its actually likely that it will come with a peripherial and cost £100/$100 as they fully well know that with COD slapped on it, it will still sell millions! If millions of people buy a map pack of 3 new maps and 2 old ones for £10/$15 i’m pretty sure a good % of those people would buy anything COD related!

The franchise abbatoir truck that is seemingly Activision looks like it’s rumbling on doing steady business. The plastic guitar thing I’m not fussed about, but CoD is a shame.
“Today, we have three studios working on Call of Duty”
?!? Let’s see how that ends up working out. Oversaturation? I only hope that choice doesn’t result in job losses.

@27 You’re not wrong, but franchise abuse is going to be the name of the game for the next two or three years. EA has lost 80% of their value in just over a year, and every other publisher has been hit hard as well.
Most likely the only new stuff is still going to be based on franchises that already have a name, like Take Two cashing in on X-Com or Bethesda doing Fallout etc.
Doesn’t have to be all bad though, depending on what you like. Nobody blames Blizzard every time they present a sequel.
That being said, I’ll need to see some real improvements if I’m gonna buy a Treyarch CoD, and it remains to be seen what Sledgehammer can do.
