Take Two president Strauss Zelnick has said that unless the company doesn’t “get bigger”, the firm won’t make a profit in a year where a major Grand Theft Auto doesn’t release.

Speaking in an interview with The LA Times, Zelnick said: “We have a worldwide distribution and publishing footprint, and in a GTA year that cost basis is fine, but in a non-GTA year it’s too high. We need to get bigger.

“The barometer is when we are profitable in a non-GTA year,” he said. “I think we can get there. I certainly aspire to it.”

But despite that, he insisted it won’t turn to annual releases, but did say it would try to release titles a bit more often.

“We can make quality video games and release them in a somewhat more orderly fashion than we have done historically. We’ll stop short of a strictly annual schedule, however, because I think that is the enemy of pushing the envelope creatively.”

Already, Take Two’s schedule has Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne 3, Agent and LA Noire all out within this year, but one of them is expected to be delayed into next year.

It also has 2K’s line-up of Civilization V and Mafia II, just to name a few, plus the just-announced XCOM reboot from 2K Marin and a new IP from Ken Levine’s Irrational Games, which was mentioned in the same LA Times interview yesterday.

Last week their CEO Ben Feder said “most big publishers have one or two flagship franchises that drive a meaningful portion of their revenue. We actually believe that relative to the rest of the industry we have great depth in the quality of our IP”.

So either their President is right and they are the GTA company or their CEO is right and they’re not. I suspect Zelnick is right about where all the money comes from…
