Kojima: Console will be dead “in the near future”

Speaking at this morning’s press conference for Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker in Japan, Hideo Kojima has said the consoles will be phased out “in the near future”.
The MGS creator and head of Kojima Productions said that players should have their experiences “on the go”.
“In the near future, we’ll have games that don’t depend on any platform,” said Kojima. “Gamers should be able to take the experience with them in their living rooms, on the go, when they travel — wherever they are and whenever they want to play. It should be the same software and the same experience.”
But SCEJ boss Hiroshi Kawano said that while he respects what Kojima said, he did add it was “a bold prediction”.
“We hope he continues to develop for platforms, but we deeply respect his sense of taking on a challenge,” he said.
Earlier this morning, the developer announced a new collaboration with Capcom to include a bonus mode in MGS: Peace Walker that sees Monster Hunter included in the game.
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker releases on April 29 in Japan, June 11 in the US and June 18 in the UK for PSP.
The only current console project in developer at Kojima Productions is Metal Gear Solid: Rising for PS3 and 360, which may or may not get a re-reveal this month.

pc gaming is already on the go. when I travel I use my gaming laptop. steam is perfect because I can ply my games right off the internet.
I am going to get iphone at some point. I have been meaning to buy one.
yes consoles will be phase out and sooner than you think. There is a major shift taking place. Not only are major pc companies coming down on game devs and console hardware companies. a good example code masters getting their bought by a pc gaming companies and cloud gaming such as onlive . Dd is destroying retail too. Your only seeing the beginning of hardware companies problems.

Part of the reason this generation will go on for so long is because nobody knows what’s going to happen after this generation.

they sure will be dead at some point in the future, but saying that it “should be the same experience” is laughable, typical japanese bullshit. I know some people enjoy playing console like games on the go, but many don’t.
btw, I guess this is yet another quote taken in isolation and removed from it’s original context.

I agree with Razor’s comment. What else can be done to further approve games.
We have:
Custom soundtracks
Upgradable Storage (HDD)
Multi media functionality
Online Gaming
Wireless controllers
Motion Controls
What else can they do besides better graphics and psychics

you have no idea do you? enjoy your last generation of consoles because they don’t have a future. code masters 50% percent of their share just got bought by a pc gaming company. That is just the begining of console problems.
agin cloud gaming and web base gaming is also a major threat to consoles. lets not talk about major pc gaming companies.

Consoles won’t be dead in the near future.
Reason is very simple. As long as there are console manufacturers such as Nintendo or Sony, they won’t miss the opportunity making money. If they want to create a machine they have money for that and we can’t do nothing about it.
Look at the Sony assets. 50 billion dollars. I repeat again 50 (!) Motherfucking billion dollars and you think they will just dismiss its entire division? YOU SERIOUS?
Cloud Gaming is the only thing that can make a certain generation last a little bit longer, but not completely destroy it.
Thats a reality and you can say what you want. Hate it or not, but consoles will not go in the near future.
@7 PC is not that highly priced please… Stop.

I’m not quite sure what Kojima means…but I hope he’s right. Console gaming definitely holds our gaming experience back years, because developers cannot create anything beyond what the box is capable of. It’s a shame really, considering all the advancements in hardware that have been made in the last few years, and there’s very little games that are taking advantage of this. Instead, developers are trying to find new ways in which they can keep the same standard of graphics and make it run on consoles; for example Crysis 2.

@13 Companies like Sony, Nintendo don’t care about how consoles hold gaming experience.
Want to play Crysis 2 with max graphics? Buy a PC. Can’t? Your problems. Its a life and we can’t do something about it.

Considering the UK won’t even have a standard 2gb line in all homes in the next two years, let alone enough for HD streaming, I think it’s safe to say that cloud-based gaming is a long way away from the mainstream.
Oh, and also…
“code masters 50% percent of their share just got bought by a pc gaming company”
No it didn’t. It got bought by a private entertainment congolomerate, and ONE of their FOURTEEN subsidiaries is an online gaming portal, Zapak.com.

The guy is talking about a mobile console with the features of a boxed one. What’s with the sensationalism here? It’s an obvious move to me. Once miniaturization catches up, it would be stupid not to combine both types of consoles. Last time I checked the DS was still the best selling console in the world. Add the functionality of a boxed console and probably also a slate PC? Golden.

BDH can you prove anything you say other than youtube clips that are completely unrelated? Give me an EA press release saying they won’t support consoles, show me something that doesn’t say the majors are not making more money on Consoles than PCs, show me something, even a leaked internal memo…. no, nothing, nada? then fuck off. indies make great things but they don’t drive the business like it or not.
Also Kojima is talking about increased mobility, PCs don’t do that. He is talking about new handhelds that are more capable of things. Such as a PSP that connects to PSN live actively, or another handheld that will bridge the gap of active and passive users (online vs offline only)
Think before you speak, or get some proof to back you up.

but consoles are PCs though. Look at the PS3. You can use a key board and mouse with some games (UT3 I think) and even make mods to put into that game just like the PC version.
You can connect a PC to your HDTV and use a wireless mouse and keyboard or DS3 and Duke3 to play games as well.
So I guess the console market is the PC market which would explain the fall of the PC market sales
or I’m just crazy like BDH

I think in the future will be less about the platform they are on. 100% agree.
Consoles dying? Yes and no.
In the near future, I expect to see cloud based services invading concoles, handhelds and PC.
Most of those devices will be light weight small, and able to play on your TV or on the go.
So yes, I agree w/Kojima. It is just that it isn’t as flashy and dramatic as the headline reads. I see it as more of an evolution of gaming and not the firey death on consoles as BDH might want to suggest.
All of this is one(maybe two) gens away, dependant on cloud working, and nothing to worry about. It should be good for most gamers, great for game devs, bad for game pubs, and really bad for brick and morter stores like Game, Gamestop, etc.

Sure consoles are PC like machines, but closed systems that have fewer upgrades are much more widely distributed than PC gaming. PC component manufacturers are supported they standard contracts of parts supplies to console and non-gaming focused PCs.
Yes I know a laptop can run, but we suffer bandwidth problems and most laptops don’t have 3G or other cell phone service. So its all just local gaming, unless you are at a hub for wifi, which is no different than sitting at home (therefore it is not mobile)
I like that you mentioned the iPad, its a closed system, not a PC and can be used as a mobile gaming device. It is WAY more like a console than a PC, so please explain how it shows that PC will defeat consoles.
You vids don’t prove anything, they never have. The E3 vid didn’t suggest consoles were dead, but rather that their life would be extended by new peripherals.
Once you can get a laptop that is not dependent on a wifi connection to access Steam or whatever, then you get said device in the hands of millions and have it openly modded not locked to a closed service then maybe maybe PCs will dominate. But you won’t the more focused the mobile space becomes (iPad, PSP, Handheld) and smaller the devices become (harder for Joe public to slip in a new graphics card) then you have people locked to a dependent system (which is no different from consoles).
Sure some people can mod their laptops, but few do. Laptops are crippled in hardware do to space constraints and heat.
Plus many companies make more money from console game sales than PCs simply do to a dedicated install base be it 20 million PS3 or whatever vs. the millions of PCs that can’t play the games plus the millions who don’t buy the games.
If you can show me something that says devs make more money across the board on PC games than consoles, in sales and in profit then you will see devs moving away from consoles. but since the majority of people buy consoles and game on consoles and support console developed games with hard cold cash, instead of stealing it online for PC then you will not see devs move away from consoles. period. Cloud service or not.

You can run any type of OS on a console?
Only with a lot of work.
The PS3 still hasn’t been hacked, and has had it’s Linux capability removed.
That doesn’t strike me as any kind of OS.
Consoles may be dead soon. But I doubt PC gaming will be what takes over.
Not everyone can afford stupidly expensive rigs, and Indie games can’t sustain a rampant market that requires constant fulfilment.

PS I am an owner of Macs, I play on consoles because it is a better experience. Who needs the headache of dealing wiht drivers and new upgrades ever 6 months to play the newest game etc. The fact that morons pay $600 for a vid card then complain that $600 console with a few games is expensive shows that the people who support PCs are silly.
YES PC games can have more avenues of opportunity for development. But that is because of the mouse and keyboard. Devs of console games have designed their games to be simple. They want to make the interaction simple so more people buy it. When you have a keyboard with 80plus keys vs a controller with 12 then you are more free to develop things, therefore you get RTS games on PCs vs consoles. But that does not mean the death of consoles.
It all comes down to closed system (console) vs open (PC) as that is what you’ve argued before. When an open system (PC or laptop) becomes so widely accepted as the only way to play then we’ll see the death of consoles. But that is not the way things are going. People are seeing closed systems as better. Develop a game/app for iPhone or iPad and you will sell more. The iPad or iPhone is closed in much the same way consoles are.
Cloud will only truely be free and PC like when every phone can connect to the same serivce, not locked to Apple, BBs, Nokia etc… Until then the cloud generation will sell you a box to sit besides your TV that connects to a closed system somewhere.
