Rockstar planning its biggest ad blowout ever for Red Dead Redemption

RDR

Rockstar’s UK general manager, Neil Stephen, has said that Red Dead Redemption is its “most ambitious game ever”, and revealed that the marketing push for it is the firm’s biggest yet.

Speaking with MCV, Stephen revealed that not only will the Western’s ads grace movie theaters, but high traffic websites like YouTube as well.

“This is our most ambitious game to date and our biggest UK release this year,” Stephen told MCV in it’s weekly online edition. “We are spending a larger proportion of our TV budget pre-launch than we ever have before to ensure Red Dead Redemption is established as a massive triple-A title.

“For the first time as a company, we will be running an on-screen cinema advertising campaign. We think that the cinematic nature of the game makes it a perfect fit for the cinema, and we will be executing a nationwide ad campaign targeting the audiences of Robin Hood, Iron Man 2, and Prince of Persia”.

Foyer posters will also support the cinema campaign, allowing customers to download content from the game via Bluetooth.

The publisher has also signed deals with Gamespot, IGN, Microsoft, LoveFilm and YouTube for free movie downloads and Xbox Live content.

“The game has garnered an incredibly positive reception from the gaming and lifestyle press with many outlets placing Red Dead Redemption as a possible game of the year contender,” added Stephen.

“In terms of sales projections, we are aiming high and as such are focusing more attention on retail channels than ever before. Once the game is released we expect that word of mouth and our massive launch media campaign will propel the game to excellent sales.

“This leaves us with very high expectations for what we think is our next blockbuster gaming franchise.”

Game’s out on May 18 and May 21 in the US and UK, respectively, for PS3 and 360.

You can check out the latest trailer for it here.

I want to buy it and i want to hear a thing that PC version is coming. I really want to play that on my PC with better controls and graphic settings…

Don’t know what to do. I hate this stuff. If you don’t want to release PC version say so, but i’m a gamer that have not only consoles, i play PC too, so why they are not talking about it?

Rockstar must make it clear: There will be no PC version or PC version is coming.

PC gaming is dead. No, I’m not happy about it either but that’s how it is.

They have to aim high. Just to break even, they have to sell 5 million units. Good luck with that.

Read Dead Revolver did over a million iirc despite being half assed, why on earth wouldn’t an open world game like this do better?

it’s been 4 years since the last tps western game too.

After the last video they released I cant wait for this game actually.. It went from “Kinda want…” to “DO WANT” in a matter of minutes.

But that said I fear this game wont get the sales they’re hoping for.. ad push or not.

@13

The bar is set way to high and then they have competition with other games releasing that same day.

No new IP is gonna make it to the 5 million mark. 1 Million if you are lucky.

Borderlands had Fallout 3 to thank for its success though, i hope Red Dead sells well i do but 5m no way will it do that. The first Uncharted sold like 3m copies and that was a new ip but Red dead is way more niche then that.

Just to clarify im not hating on the game i think it looks absoluetly amazing and its probably a day one purchase depends if i choose Alan Wake.

well, Red Dead Revolver is a relatively known title, and this one is going to be kind of Gun+GTA.

It will be over 3m copies sold now though as it sold 2.6m before the price cut.

I remember watching the first footage back at E3 2005, was a small short teaser. 5 years its took to make maybe even longer. How ironic Alan Wake was also shown at E3 2005 and they are both long in the making games and are both coming out on the same day :D

It’ll be very interesting to see how this sell. Western games always seem to flop. No idea why.
