Molyneux: "There are regional differences" between Euro and US markets

molyneux

During the latest 4 Guys 1UP podcast, Lionhead's Peter Molyneux revealed what he believes are the differences between the European and American gaming markets.

According to Molyneux, the gap between European and American gamers varies in taste per geographical region, and focusing on these differences can be a bit counterproductive for a developer.

What he says kind of speaks for itself so we'll just get right to it.

"I think there was an era we all went through where Europe had its own taste," said Molyneux. "It had a taste for things like SingStar. It was really one of the first audiences that really got motion control, with these things like the EyeToy, which was enormously successful, and SingStar, which was very successful.

"But really, has that continued? I'm not sure it really has.

"There are these regional differences where the French definitely enjoy a sort of more visual experience, the Germans in general love numbers, they love lots of numbers and manipulating numbers. This is grossly exaggerating. The English -- they love characters breaking wind. It seems like that's a big thing for the British market.

"You know, we're geographically halfway between America and Europe in spirit. And so there are some regional differences, but the more I think about it, the more I realize that we all are making games for the world... and if we start worrying about, 'Hey Germans like this, and the Japanese like that, and Americans like this,' then you know, I think we'd drive ourselves crazy."

Funny. We had no idea UK'ers loved games full of trouser trumpeting. Guess ya learn something new everyday.

You can listen to the full thing over on 1UP.

Lionhead's Fable III is expected to be out sometime around the holiday shopping extravaganza, with development to stop around Thanksgiving.

The game is also to have episodic content released for it.
