Miyamoto: “We were not able to produce fun-enough products” for 2009

miyamoto3

Shigeru Miyamoto has admitted in an interview with The Economist that Nintendo’s software in 2009 was comparatively sub-par due to a “fun” failure.

“The fact that in 2009 we were not able to sell more than we did in 2008 was simply that in comparison, we were not able to produce fun-enough products,” he said.

“There are always ups and downs in this business. As long as we create unique and unprecedented experiences with videogames, there should be nothing to worry about,” Miyamoto further added.

2008, huh? We still have nightmares of Wii Music.

Miyamoto’s been on a fair bit of a media run recently, having picked up a BAFTA Fellowship last week.

And yet their hardware still trounced the competition.

Pretty incredible.

You can’t fault his honesty.

Looking forward to the Nintendo out-put this year though.

Didn’t they admit that about the year before as well?

The trick is to get other people to make some for you, Shigsy. Actually perhaps part of the trick as far as Nintendo is concerned is to try and get some of their customers to actually buy some of those games that other people make, too.

Another part of that trick would be to get the other people that make these other games to spend more than 5p promoting them.

Also, Wii Music is great. Just sayin’.

I thought the wii had more 3rd party ‘million sellers’ than any other console platform? Mostly crappy party/waggle/soccermom/etc games but still the “no-one else sells on nintendo” line needs a slight modification ;)

at last some honest, candid comment from Nintendo. Not the balls-out US style ramblings of Reggie.
