Microsoft – Natal 2 in development

According to a report from The Sydney Morning Herald, Microsoft’s confirmed it’s already developing Natal 2: 7-9 months before the first one even releases.
Speaking with the Australian newspaper, the Microsoft Research Asia boss Hsiao-Wuen Hon said work was already being carried out on a second version of the camera.
“When we do invent something first like the Natal kind of scenario,” said Hon, “while we have a researcher working with the product group for the first version, we already have a researcher thinking about the second version down the road.”
He further added: “We certainly hope we will continue to be holding that technology. I really love what Microsoft is doing.”
The first version of Natal is due out by the end of the year. Its full name will be revealed at E3 in June.
Thanks, Spong.

I’m going on a limb and say M$ will announce the nextBOX in 2011. They might give a sneak peak or clue about it this year. Sony won’t open their mouth until M$ does for sure I bet.

Let’s just hope they give it a decent name. Although it’s MS so they probably won’t. If it’s called “Jive” I think I’d boycott it for that terrible name alone.

second version of the initial model, much like the consoles are built with different pieces, over time. Thinking about ——> in development. Note the gulf, there.

I wouldn’t be surprised if these new cameras for both next gen consoles will be built in the machine itself. Although there could be problems to even that. Like people who store their console inside an entertainment center.

Do you think they’ll go the “XBOX 720″ route or something entirely different altogether?

Good question, really. The most important number in “360″ was the 3, to combat the PS3. I guess it depends on whether PlayStation will go with PS4, you could argue either way. Personally, I don’t think it will be Xbox 720 and I don’t think it will be PlayStation 4 either. The number 4 does not brand well…

The more you think about the Xbox360 name the more stupid it sounds every second. I hear the number 4 is bad luck in Japan so they will most likely call the next PlayStation a code name.
But to be slightly on topic I’m betting this Natal 2 will be built inside the next XBOX.

I think it has to be bundled, there is a very large rumour going round that Microsoft have had to strip a particular processor out of the Natal camera to keep the standalone cost down. Natal 2 may well be integrating the chip they lost into the hardware infrastructure – this could appear in a Xbox 360 slim if thet actually is the case but most definitely in the next Xbox.
But I heard a rumour that only 4% of rumours are actually true…

They’ll probably call it ‘Xbox Infinity’. And Sony will call theirs ‘Playstation Infinity+1′.

lol……honestly, I think Sony should just plan on eventually calling their next system “PS4″. It just makes sense.
Not really sure what makes the most sense for Microsoft.
But yeah, on topic, they must really be seeing some limitations with Natal if they’re already planning it’s follow up development…otherwise, why not put what you’re planning for Natal 2, into Natal 1…

Er, this is no surprise guys, this is what you should expect to happen!
Anyone here *really* thinks Sony isn’t working on PSMove2 already, possibly for launch with the PS4?
They’re not going to launch these products and then sit on their backsides for a few years

“They’re not going to launch these products and then sit on their backsides for a few years”
Obviously. Just odd they’d be working on follow up 4-6 months before origial product is even launched.

This info, coupled with dropping components to cut costs, isn’t getting me too rosy for Natal. Sounds like V1 is going to be more like V0.5 the way they’re going.

@25 I was thinking the same thing, although considering the technology they’re working with, we’re talking about cutting edge stuff at a very affordable cost. Any sort of succes with that would still be pretty impressive.

Typical MS put out a buggy system fix the issues later just like they did with Xbox and the 360.

@23 who said “Obviously. Just odd they’d be working on follow up 4-6 months before origial product is even launched.”
I don’t see anything odd really. Why should work on a successor *only* start after the launch of the first?
@25 – Whilst the lost of the built-in CPU is disappointing, it is understandable and makes sense. Natal at say $50-$60 can fly off the shelves, it’s an impulse buy where even gamers not really interested may buy one out of curiousity. With a built-in CPU (and memory), then at say $100-$120 it’s not going to be as easy to sell, where many will wait for the price to drop and for more games to be released for it.
@27 – Why don’t we wait and see first before jumping to conclusions.
E3 is not far away, I’m sure we’ll have many of the answers by then.

“I don’t see anything odd really. Why should work on a successor *only* start after the launch of the first?”
Because Natal is either going to work, or it’s not. They’d best be putting their eggs all in one basket at this point. ESPECIALLY with the uncertainty of how direct competition PS-Move will play out.

Look at MS’s track record. Their OS releases do the exact same thing 2000, Vista, Xbox, Xbox 360, ring any bells?

@29 – Well Natal is unlikely not to work, it *will* work, we just have to see how well it works
And my point regarding Natal 2 is that we ALL know that right now, MS and Sony are working on their next-gen consoles. Hence for me, it seems obvious that ‘Natal 2′ is being designed with the next-gen XBox in mind, where the console and ‘Natal 2′ will be designed from the start to get the most out of the technology, unlike Natal which is an add-on bound by the limitations of the current 360. In otherwords, Natal 2 is not for the current 360.
@30 – An OS is completely different. Games software has a mere fraction of the complexity of an OS, and yet we still get bugs in games which need to be patched. So problems are to be expected on OSs, especially on PCs.
Yes the XBox 360 had hardware issues, but so did the PS2 (DRE problem anyone?) and the Playstation (anyone remember turning it upside down to get the CD to work?). The XBox had a minor issue with power leads, the first PSPs had analog stick and dead pixel problems, the first iPod Nanos had screen scratching issues etc. There’s even the Sony rootkit controversy and their recall of millions of potentially explosive laptop batteries.
So yes, it rings some bells, but let’s not pretend this is specific to Microsoft. Companies like MS and Sony work on the cutting edge of technology (software and hardware), and therefore problems are inevitable as a result of this.
