Molyneux “worried” about first 30-minutes of Fable III

Fable III concept art

Peter Molyneux has tweeted that he is a bit worried over Fable III’s first half-hour.

Apparently, there isn’t any combat in the game for the first bit, and this has him wondering if that is too long.

Here’s the tweet:

Been playing the opening of Fable III. I am slightly worried that there is no combat for the first 30 mins. Is this too long? Thoughts.

The first two Fables gave you time in the beginning to get used to the controls, but since no one knows – except Lionhead, of course – how Fable III will begin, what happens is anyone’s guess. ‘

However, like Eurogamer mentioned, the first-half it will have you trying to thwart the king and take his seat as the ruler of Albion.

Oh, and there will be loads of touching, apparently. That should be interesting, and possibly provide a bunch of randy-fun.

Fable III will land in stores in time for the holiday season.

That doesn’t seem too bad. Your average Final Fantasy doesn’t have any interaction in the first two hours! :-D

Of course its too long! I mean, we really need to take into consideration all those short attentions spans that are so prevalent nowadays, right? However will we sell our games otherwise?!

“Your average Final Fantasy doesn’t have any interaction in the first two hours!”

You’re either joking or talking bollocks. I’d like to assume it’s the former, because you’re usually a smart one Blerk.

I’m joking, of course. It does sometimes feel that way, though. Japanese developers sure know how to ramp it up slooooooooooowly.

Final Fantasies, in their defence, are one of the better franchises when it comes to that sort of thing. VI, VII, IX, X, XII and XIII pretty much open up with a fight from the get go.

But yeah, there’s definitely some RPGs out there that take the cake, to the point that even someone like myself, who has an almost inexhaustible degree of patience, ends up getting tired of waiting for some actual gameplay. Xenosaga was especially guilty of this. I couldn’t stand Episode 2 beyond the first few hours.

does anyone play fable games for the fighting? i know its a huge part of the game, but its not something i even consider when i think about playing a fable game, more of a byproduct

the perfect fable game would be something like an action ‘persona’ game, a lot me emphasis on meaningful socializing and keep the action limited and meaningful i.e so you’re not just constantly brawling every time you leave a town for no reason

Meh, games can be entertaining even when you don’t fight/kill anyone.

Not entirely sure, but am I right in thinking that some classes in DAO don’t fight for a much longer period of time at the beginning?

The latest Final Fantasy doesn’t have a game for the first 20 hours or so, so I hear :D

Half an hour sounds just fine to me.

@8
So you hear.
What you hear is wrong by the way.
I’m only 4 hours in and enjoying it.
Just wish I had more time to devote to it.

30 minutes is fine. I personally don’t think Fable, especially Fable III is about just the combat.

Its about the story, the world, the people in it, and the actions you take.

Of course combat has its role, but It doesn’t need to be there at the start. If this was Tekken and you didn’t smack anybody in 30 minutes, then its an issue.

Peter Molyneux: The most insecure person working in video games.

Do you honestly believe the tweet was genuine? I doubt he’s concerned at all, tbh.

I will be spending the first 30 minutes not eating pies and getting fat.

It isn’t too long if there are other things that are interesting and cool to do. A game doesn’t need to have combat, but there has to be an engaging activity or it is just a movie.
I have faith in you, Pete.

I found my interest in Fable 2 waning when the combat started. The section where you’re a child doing various little quests actually held my interest very well.

I just hope they’ve dumped all that tedious MMO-style crafting Fable 2 had…

Speaking of Persona, ain’t 3 & 4′s beginning felt like forever before you actually need to pick up controller? And you can’t even save during it. That’s what I consider too long.

About Fable, I really hated the “emotion” system, it nearly killed the atmosphere for me. Do three pumps in front of a woman and she is going to marry you? Yes, it’s a fairytale world but that kind of overthetopness is just too outlandish.
