Japanese hardware charts – That PSP, eh?

PSP 2

We’re running out of things to say on PSP running out as the hardware winner week-after-week in Japan. But it’s topped the billing once again.

The handheld came with 39k of sales, while Wii sold 31k and PS3 came third with 26k. Nothing groundbreaking, just PSP repeating in our mind every Friday.

  • Wii – 31,460
  • PS3 – 26,481
  • DSi LL – 21,604
  • DSi – 13,581

No, it’s not won until one is dead. It can still catch up, at this rate it will have done in 2315. Keep the faith.

The PSP eh. It must put Sony in a right awkward position. Dead in the West, King of the East. The solution… a full backwards compatible PSP2 surely, that fixes the mistakes of PSP and keeps both markets happy.

PSP actually sold more then all of the DS’ models combined.

A PSP2 which could play all PSP1 games and downloadable PS2 games…. could be a winner in the West.

I think that if the rumours of Nintendo releasing a full, new portable system are true then Sony will probably follow.

I’ll be surprised if we don’t see both at E3.

I like my PSP.
I’d probably love it if I actually got to play it.
But my gfs brother keeps getting the train with me, meaning that it’d be anti-social to play.

@8 Sony won’t release PSP2 now. Its impossible because they only started to hit with PSP.

+ they are thinking to make a PSPPhone with SonyEricsson.

Only just started to hit? The PSP’s pretty much dead outside of Japan, where it’s been popular for ages. The time is absolutely right for them to launch a new machine – the Go was just a stop-gap to let people know that they were still doing the handheld thing. However badly.

@11 Lets see how it will sell with new Metal Gear and its not dead at all. Its the first Sony’s handheld and it is very successful so far. Not at the level of DS and again its first successful Sony game handheld and they sell products for 10 year life cycle.

The hardware sells steadily, but the games sell fuck all in the West because piracy is totally rampant. Gran Turismo PSP sold a fraction of what it should have, for example, Metal Gear isn’t going to magically save it.

@15 and they will sell as fuck with PSP2. Piracy will never go away.
Sony can’t just release PSP2 or something like that. They only started to hit with PSP go thats just need a price drop.

+ FFXIII Agito is not even out or we don’t even saw it.

+ no rumors about new PSP Hardware and i think Sony just don’t know what PSP2 can be that can sell better then its predecessor.

I think we will see PSP 2 maybe at 2012 or even at 2014.

“+ no rumours about new PSP Hardware and e.t.c.”

Actually i agree with that; If it was for E3 there’d have probably been some leaks by now, this is Sony after all.

Heh heh! You might be right! :-D

You’re wrong about them not being able to make piracy go away though, Erthazus – they already did that with the Go! If anyone had actually bought one it’d have been perfect for Sony.

The PSP2? Download only, from the start. Bye bye piracy.

Yeah and if they were to go and announce the PSP2 this E3 its pretty much just pissing all over the people that forked out the cash for a PSP Go, If some wants to get success with the PSP2 in the West whenever its released it only needs 1 thing, and thats another analog nub. I’ve managed to get used to only having the one but i know thats the principle reason people don’t like playing and also prob the reason why i don’t think i’ve bought any 3rd person shooters. Don’t see why they don’t bring out 1st person shooters with N64 style controls though!

18@ Thats the problem too. Download only pissed enough retailers to not sell PSP Go.
some consumers like me prefer it with physical copy and e.t.c.
PSP2 with download only must have a perfect timing and this time its not it because of PSP Go, especially people who bought recently PSP Go will be pissed.

+ i think Sony just don’t know what to do with new version, they can’t even sell PSP Go, so first of all they must be sure that they are ready to launch 2nd beast.

The fact that they don’t even seem to be trying to sell the Go leads me to suspect that they don’t care whether it sells or not – it was just an experiment to see how people would react to a download-only machine.

You might be right, it might be too early. But with retailers basically saying that the PSP is dead over here anyway, Sony have to do something soon and as long as piracy is rampant on the platform I fail to see what they can do other than call it quits and launch a brand new machine.
