Nomura: Versus XIII will have world map, airships

Linearity? Like Final Fantasy XIII? Tetsuya Nomura spits at you! Apooey!
The Final Fantasy Versus XIII director has revealed the game will have a world map and airships to travel with.
Speaking in a Twitter interview with Square Enix producer Shinji Yoshimoto, he said:
“Not everything is connected together, so the various areas have different levels of progress. However, you can fly across the world map in an air ship.”
When asked what the current “state” was with the game, as well as other FNC title Final Fantasy Agito XIII and The Third Birthday, he couldn’t say.
“I’m being stopped by producer Hashimoto,” said Nomura.
The game’s gone properly underground since a new trailer last April, bar a small appearance at Tokyo Game Show last September with a tech demo. A new trailer was shown behind closed doors at Jump Fiesta last December, promising “Revelation will come next time”.
Nomura did promise last October Versus XIII would be at E3 this summer if the development team was “quick enough”, but that looks like it may potentially not make it.
Final Fantasy Versus XIII, going at this current rate, will be released as a PlayStation 3 exclusive in the year 3000.
Thanks, Andriasang.

Why the hell would anyone *want* world maps?
They stopped being relevant and entered the annals of “outdated video game mechanics” the day Dragon Quest VIII was released.

Forget you O’Conner this is by far the best news Ive heard in a very long time, Thank You Namura for listening to the fans and not people here like O’Conner, he even thinks God Of War is crap!

Yes, I do think God of War is crap. I also think that RPGs grew out of archaic design ideas like world maps years ago.
Games don’t need them, when its possible to physically create the actual world step for step. People are so caught up in their nostalgia that progression is seen as a “bad” thing.

I’m with you Talyis, this is great news and is what I as a long time fan want and miss from the series. ‘archaic design ideas like world maps’ is an interesting opinion, not obviously one that I would share. Old Idea != Archaic Design IMO

Not every game is Fallout 3 or Oblivion and there is a reason why people like the older style games, Quite frankly your sounding like a damn casual gamer. Yes Bethesda games are awesome but there stories aren’t nearly as good as the JRPG’s out there. Have you ever even played a JRPG? Why do you think a lot of people didn’t like FF13 like myself? It’s too linear, FF10 was linear but there were other factors that help it stay true to the rest of the series unlike FF13 which feels almost like I’m playing an FPS. And what the hell is wrong with retro style games or nostalgia games, to me it feels like the old days and that’s not a bad thing at all. Maybe you would have had to have been there during the retro days to know what I mean! nothing wrong with average either look at Halo and MW2 2 average games that people go crazy over. but when an RPG has something average or done before it’s hell on earth for that game! Loosing world maps in JRPG’s is like losing customization in FPS games it’s a big part of the game!

Oblivion is a terrible game anyway, compared to the rest of the Elder Scrolls franchise.
“Quite frankly your sounding like a damn casual gamer.”
Well, I can *appreciate* casual games. But the fact that I own every single mainstream from the last 20 years (except the ones I knew would flop) can argue that claim pretty easily.
“Yes Bethesda games are awesome but there stories aren’t nearly as good as the JRPG’s out there.”
Bethesda did not invent full world exploration, though I will certainly attest that they are one of the major pioneers of that approach.
“Have you ever even played a JRPG?”
Probably a hell of a lot more than you have.
I own *every* single Final Fantasy game and most spin-offs, most of the Dragon Quests, every Shin Megami Tensie game released in the west, the majority of the Tales of… titles, the entire Breath of Fire series, the entire Suikoden series (including Tactics), all the Wild Arms games, all the Shadow Hearts games… and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. You name, if its a JRPG, I’ve likely played it.
This generation of console has just been absolutely *dire* for the genre though, because Japanese developers refuse to advance with the technology.
“Why do you think a lot of people didn’t like FF13 like myself?”
I happen to love FFXIII (guess what format I bought it for?). It’s people’s attachment to the past that is the very reason Square refuses to take risks, and unlike most people (apparently) I actually like each individual gaming experiences to feel unique and individualistic. Why would I want to play the same thing over and over again?
“Maybe you would have had to have been there during the retro days to know what I mean!”
What age are you?
My fist games machine was an Amstrad CPC 464. I can assure you, I was around “during the retro days”. I grew up on Dizzy for Christ’s sake. *laughs*
“Loosing world maps in JRPG’s is like losing customization in FPS games it’s a big part of the game!”
Funny, Dragon Age VIII managed to advance the genre by *not* including them, and still remains a benchmark for how to make a great JRPG, in my honest opinion.
Walking a giant avatar across a completely out of scale world map looks stupid and plays badly, especially with modern design principles.
And there used to be a time with FPS games didn’t have customisation beyond what weapons you could pick up on the level. Just sayin’.
I mean, I wouldn’t have minded you having a difference of opinion if you didn’t feel the need to make remark like this: “Forget you O’Connor” and “Thank You Nomura for listening to the fans and not people here like O’Connor” and instead bothered to discuss our difference of opinion like a mature adult.

Great quote, had to repeat it because it made me smile so much. I also had a CPC 464 for a while, as well as various Spectrums and a C64. Gaming back then was fun and a real challenge that most people would not be willing to undertake these days.
Wait 10 minutes for a game to load? Occasionally find it would crash whilst loading, forcing you to try again? Control systems that would make every personal injury lawyer in the country happy? Q,A,O,P,M? Jumpers for goalposts?
Great memories. Gamers are spoiled these days.

“Q,A,O,P,M?”
That’s how it was done! None of that silly W,A,S,D crap the kids use nowadays!
“ghostbusters 2 on the zx spectrum (you know the one where you’d get lowered down into the sewer) was fucking impossible, AND every time you died you had to reload the whole fucking tape!!!! thats hardcore”
Ghostbusters on the ZX Spectrum easily ranks up there as one of the worst video games *ever* made, even by Spectrum standards.
How the hell did we ever tolerate those sound effects… and that music?! EARS BLEEDING!

“And there used to be a time with FPS games didn’t have customisation beyond what weapons you could pick up on the level. Just sayin’”
No really it was an example of how real fans appreciate certain features in games if you were such a big fan of JRPG’s as you claim(like you bragging about all the JRPG’s you supposedly have) you would appreciate it as much as we do unlike stupid idiodic things like this-
“I happen to love FFXIII (guess what format I bought it for?). It’s people’s attachment to the past that is the very reason Square refuses to take risks, and unlike most people (apparently) I actually like each individual gaming experiences to feel unique and individualistic”
Saying Square doesn’t like taking risks is complete bullshit that’s all they have been doing from the world map, live battle system, mmo gameplay, linear story, single character control, Auto Attack-maybe auto attack helps you out but the we JRPG fans like to control the characters(all of them not just 1) here an example of gameplay thats fast past in a turn base kind of way. Rogue Galaxy and FFX-2 they both had excellent battle systems that were fresh yet traditional at the same time!
Oh and here is for bragging these are the JRPG’s I own by Series and yes I own all of them in each series.

God knows how I forgot Disgaea. I love Nippon Ichi strategy RPGs!
I can safely say I own pretty much everything on your list though bar one or two (I’ve never cared for Ys., and never played Terranigma), plus a few others.

Hmmm, I’ll wait till I see it. We’ve pretty much seen and heard nothing of this game since its reveal. Although, from what I understand, it’s not gonna be like the usual Final Fantasy’s.

12 didn’t have one either.
Mind you, it went one step further and managed that a fully integrated world, with sweeping landscapes to explore, which is infinitely more awesome.

I couldnt stand FF 12, and driving around in the airship in FF 7, 8, and 9 remains brilliant to this day. If he can bring that back with amazing graphics, vs 13 is sounding like it could be something special.

“This generation of console has just been absolutely *dire* for the genre though, because Japanese developers refuse to advance with the technology.”
I have been complaining about thise for awhile now.
JP is really out of the loop at this point. Too many handheld games. And a reluctance(or is it a complete lack of understanding) to move forward in terms of game design, online MP, and more.
I also think that competition has been hard for the JP games industry.
