Cage: Describing Heavy Rain for two years has “been my nightmare”

David Cage has told G4 that it was difficult for him to explain Heavy Rain to other people over the course of the past two years.

Speaking to Adam Sessler during GDC, Cage said that it was hard getting people to “get” what the game was all about.

“Describing the experience that is Heavy Rain’s been my nightmare for the past two years,” he said, “because I’ve had to evangelize, I’ve had to talk about this game for two years just to make people aware what we were doing, etc, etc. I really got the feeling that no matter how hard I tried, people could not get what kind of experience it would be.

“Now, it’s really funny to see players who played the game try to explain it to their friends and facing the same issues. Because if I ask you ‘what do you do in Heavy Rain?’ — you know, if I ask you ‘what you do in any shooter?’ you say ‘I shoot and it was exciting because of this or that,’ but if I ask you ‘what you do in Heavy Rain?’ it’s a difficult question to answer.

“When we were talking about the game, we always said that if this game a commercial success or failure, it’s going to send a very strong message to the industry. If it’s a failure, it’s going to tell everybody that no one’s interested in creating experiences for an adult audience based on interactive storytelling and emotions.

“But at the same time, if it’s a commercial success, maybe it’s going to open doors to other people and say that you can be creative and try something different and at the same time have some kind of commercial success.”

Heavy Rain gets a patch soon, and despite shortages in the UK, it’s being restocked.

And it turned out to be one of the most amazing games I’ve ever played in the past 10 years. I hope this game opens the doors for many more games like this.

Sony has always been great in supporting endeavours like this, something for which they should be heavily commended for. Gaming would be a far less interesting place without games like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and Heavy Rain in it.

(Alakratt, pay attention to this post. It presents a subtle hint about how I *actually* feel about Sony and the PS3. See if you can figure it out!)

David Cage Is The most Creative Game Producer I’ve Seen In My Life. What’s You’re Idea For His Next game? Maybe Omikron 2?

Well, we know there *is* an Omikron 2 being worked on, but no idea if it’ll be their next game or not.

I’d prefer a Little Big Adventure or Flashback continuation, or just about anything that Adeline would care to put out, were they still around. Better things came out of France than David Cage, but sadly these days they seem to be forgotten. Oh well, c’est la vie.

Those were the days. Twinsen and his magic ball. Fantastic game. (and the sequel, too)
