Battlefield Bad Company 2 grenade spam PSA looks a bit familiar

Wednesday, 17th March 2010 05:06 GMT By Nathan Grayson

FRAGS

Remember when Activision tried to tickle our funny bones with that “F.A.G.S.” Modern Warfare 2 PSA video last year? Remember when the gaming populace -  like many tickled people do – kicked, flailed, and screamed until Activision pulled the video?

On a maybe possibly somewhat related note, can you guess what the latest Battlefield Bad Company 2 trailer’s about?

Yeesh. Kicking Modern Warfare 2 when it’s down? Maybe. But who ever said Modern Warfare 2 didn’t deserve it?

A bit unimaginative, but the whole “we’re coming for ya, MW2!” theme is a bit charming. Wouldn’t have been nearly as fun if it didn’t involve a veritable Goliath of the industry like the Infinity Ward flagship series, though…

The jab at how insanely effective grenades are in CoD is funny, because its completely true.

Their box looks like the MW2 box.

Their trailers look like MW2 trailers.

Their game script refers to MW2.

Their PR frequently talks about MW2.

Now their ads mimic MW2 ads.

    Lets face it…

These guys are OBSESSED with MW2!

Bad Company 2 does all of them 10 times better.

The fact that they’re referring to grenade spamming (hello noobtubes!) is something I find absolutely hilarious!

I dont think its about noobtubes, its more about the fact that in CoD you can use hand grenades as mortar shells and gets kills at the otherside of the map just by randomly throwing them into the air.

Don’t waste your time explaining things logically to O’Connor, Geki.

It’s doubtful that he will ever be able to understand the difference between an enemy player and someone on his own team, much less a grenade and a noob tube.

And when you talk with such a condescending ego GIGA, you can certainly be sure I’m not going to respond back in a friendly manner.

Geki here, unlike yourself, is actually capable of talking to people like a grown adult.

“I dont think its about noobtubes, its more about the fact that in CoD you can use hand grenades as mortar shells and gets kills at the otherside of the map just by randomly throwing them into the air.”

Well, grenades in Modern Warfare 2 in general are utterly overpowered, whether fired from a noobtude or flung from the hand. Who needs one of those when you can use a harrier jet though, right? *laughs*

Someone brings the sense, and G1GAHURTZ brings the laughter by being unintentionally funny. Thank you, G1GAHURTZ.

The thing is, there’s no ‘logical explanation’ here, it’s simply one person sharing a subjective opinion with another, and in reality there’s little to say which is the correct opinion because both seem to be equally valid possibilities to me.

I do like though that you present Geki’s opinion as a fact (even though Geki used the Universally understood opinion indicator of ‘I think/I don’t think’, so therefore he doesn’t believe his opinion is a fact), and then tie that into a bunch of base insults.

Got any more poo to fling today, G1GAHURTZ? You’re pretty funny, just not for the reasons you think you are.

I didn’t talk, or respond to you, silly boy.

You’ve obviously just quoted me and come up with a completely irrelevant, juvenile, flame bait comment because you like being “very prickly”, so I don’t see why you’re so surprised when I talk about you in such a way.

And I didn’t even call you a deluded moron.

    “Can’t thewulf be O’connor himself?”

I have better things to do than create alternate accounts just to flatter my own ego. Trust me, I’m as surprised by the defence as you are… not that I’m complaining.

But if you want to rely on conspiracy theories to explain things, you go right on ahead and do that. There’s some tin-foil hats on the table over there if case you need any.

“You’ve obviously just quoted me and come up with a completely irrelevant, juvenile, flame bait comment because you like being “very prickly””

Because, ya know, naming me out and attacking my apparent character flaws to another poster isn’t at all irrelevant, juvenile, and flame baiting… right?

    *laughs*

Once again, GIGA’s raging testosterone levels turn another perfectly decent comments section into a ego-stroking troll-fest. Nice job. *thumbs up*

Do you think it would have happened had you been more reasonable in the first place!?

    That’s your problem, O’Connor.

I’ll gladly respond to someone who flames me. Don’t blame someone else for your inability to control yourself, because as anyone who looks at this can clearly see, your freely threw the first bunch, my dear child.

I’ll *gladly* argue with someone who directly attacks me. You’re such a raging sycophant that it’s hilarious.

How exactly did I flame you Mr O’Connor.

Exactly which part of comment number 3 refers to you in any way, shape or form?

Nothing in comment 3 did. Neither did I flame you in comment 4… unless expression your opinion on a game constitutes as a “flame” now. Comment number 6 though…

MW2 is their main competition, it makes sense to parody their approach to try and position yourself as the better alternative.

Neither did I flame you in comment 4… unless expression your opinion on a game constitutes as a “flame” now.

Which is exactly why I refered to it as “completely irrelevant, juvenile, flame bait

    And not actually a flame.

Nobody here is even discussing the quality of either game. Rather, as tempted as I was by Mr Grayson’s obviously loaded article, I intentionally made no comment whatsoever on the quality of either of the two titles.

I just stated obvious observations that I’m sure that many people would have no choice except to agree with me about, adding my opinion of these observations at the end.

Given that this is the case, the fact that you instantly tried to turn it into a ‘BC2 is 10 times better than MW2′ conversation by quoting my post makes me suspicious of your intentions.

  21. G1GAHURTZ

    Take note Mr O’Connor.

Here is an example of a GENUINE response to my comment.

One that I do agree with to a certain extent, Freek, but sometimes they do seem to go over the top.

I can’t think of another game that’s tried to sell itself off of someone else’s title as much as this one is.

  23. Dimacorgan

Yeah, it makes all the sense in the world, especially when the competitor is so huge… Frankly, I don’t see how you could honestly say that BC2 does everything 10 times better than MW2. And I am also kinda wondering on which basis any of us can say that greneades are actually overpowered… (they kind of annoy me as well, anyway)

    #23 5 years ago
  24. abbe

I find that BC2 does most of its things better, mainly in its teamwork department, why? Because teamwork involves other things than killing the other team, like revives, resupplies, spotting, but in MW2 its only killing and once you’re dead, they will have their score and your team cant undo it.

The Single player portion was in no way better than MW2 though, but the open-endedness of BC2 was a nice difference from the superscripted MW2 experience.

Grenades are overpowered based on the notion that if they act as a “win button”, they are probably too powerful. I think they’re pretty well balanced in BC2 though, you don’t die unless they get around 2 meters away from you, and even then you pretty much have to be hurt already.

    #24 5 years ago
  25. DrDamn

I think the heavy parody is flattery – though at the same time they are keen to stress their differentiating factors. E.g. Why spam grenades when you can jump in a chopper?

    #25 5 years ago
  26. reask

Maybe I am getting this wrong but I was of the impression that gaming was about fun.
    If so MW2 provides that.
I mean its not about reality its about fast paced online gaming that is set up well.
I have not played BC2 so I cant compare but I find MW2 enjoyable and that’s why I like it.

  27. SplatteredHouse

I thought the clip was quite funny. What wasn’t as funny, was that someone forgot to set out the “conversation minefield” notice. You think they’re going to talk about games, you hope it may happen. but no, some people are back to throwing the thread off-course, with their own arguments, yet again. Do we need to read that, really, these games of he said/she said?

    #27 5 years ago
  28. SunKing

They were ridiculous in CoD4, but they don’t seem so bad in MW2 (grenades, I mean). I don’t know, I might play some of it today. Had a hankering for it recently.

Er, anyway, this did make me laugh because it does at least two things correctly: one, deservedly takes the piss out of MW2′s horrendous F.A.G.S video; and two, communicates the general, more off-the-wall, tone of Bad Company, which I dig.

    #28 5 years ago
  29. SplatteredHouse

I think the differences in the scale/map design cause grenades to be less easily spammed in BFBC2. Also, like the video points out, you do have more relevent options most of the time.

    #29 5 years ago
  30. DrDamn

As a frequent Assault class player the ammo box + grenade jobby-lob still gets you some nice kills. Needs specific situations though and as SplatterHouse points out the scale/map design does a good job of reducing the effectiveness of the tactic.

You get the option to throw grenades back in MW 2 so i dont see it as a problem. Dice really do seem to be a bit insecure if you ask me maybe they have finally relised they will never make 1 billion dollars with BF.

Even funnier is Dice are doing all these videos saying we can do this they cant and whats IW doing whilst Dice are doing this, nothing becase they dont have to now thats cool :D

The way I see it is if anyone still plays MW2, they get what they deserve ;)

    Yes, I said that.

  34. G1GAHURTZ

I’m not sure if it was CoD4, or MW2, but one time I was playing and got taken out by what looked like a totally random grenade (it is possible that it was thrown in the direction of an orange dot if he had a UAV).

So I got annoyed and said something like… ‘Wow! What was that!? You know what? I’m just gonna throw a completely random grenade and see if I get a kill!!!’, not expecting one of course. I just wanted to confirm that the game was being ‘unfair’ to me.

So I spawned, faced the direction that I thought people were less likely to be in and just threw one into the air without even cooking it.

    A few seconds later…

+100 (or +10 if it was CoD4) flashes up on my screen! LOL!

That’s the only totally random grenade kill that I can remember ever getting.

It’s happened to me loads, but I just get on with it.

I managed to get a team kill and destroy an M-COM whilst on defence last night by chucking a grenade in on an enemy setting a charge. It was the last straw in making the building collapse. I got -15 for the team kill – not sure about the M-COM :D

That’s a nice commercial indeed. I was really disappointed when Activision pulled the other one.

I’m yet to be killed by a grenade I couldn’t have moved from in Modern Warfare 2 though. Noobtubes are annoying sure, but in BC2 you’re basically expected to use them on a Team Fortress 2 level, so I fail to see how bitching about ‘em in one game and loving them in another makes any sense.

Fact is, BC2 is like BF2 mixed with Modern Warfare elements, but it just doesn’t do any of those nearly as good. I can understand why they go that way, and the effects and the sounds are vastly superior, but if you’re serious about going for a game as polished as MW2, why would you leave in all the bugs that occasionally breaks your game, along with an interface that looks like it was made in the Soviet Union?

I think it’s nice that some people like their games derivative and sloppy, and BC2 is arguably a game that’s worth getting, but I still don’t see the threat to Modern Warfare 2. It’s just not on the same level.

    #40 5 years ago
  41. DrDamn

    @DeSpiritusBellum
The core reason for playing any game is gameplay not polish. BFBC2 has a different type of gameplay to MW2. Therefore some will prefer one over the other. I like a big emphasis on team play, big open maps and vehicular shenanigans – it doesn’t matter how polished MW2 is, it will never offer me these things in the way BFBC2 does.

    #41 5 years ago
  42. DeSpiritusBellum

@41 Totally fair point. I really like the fact that BC2 has support classes, which is something I’ve missed playing in CoD, although apart from that I’m just the opposite kind of gamer. I don’t dig all the yomping in BC2, I’m more of an adrenaline addict, and I really like the fact that CoD doesn’t waste my time on interface or matchmaking. It means I can grab a quick game whenever I feel like it in about three clicks.

I don’t mind people actually preferring one or the other, we’re all different, and BC2 has loads of other qualities just like you say, but argueing that you like BC2 because it’s somehow the better design is just bollocks. If it’s just better suited for you, then I have nothing against it – Play on!
