Report: PS3 shortages could hinder God of War III sales

An article over on the L.A. Times suggests that shortages of PS3 consoles at retail could hamper God of War III sales.

According to the paper, recent visits to different Best Buy, GameStop and Target stores over in the West Hollywood area found each lacking the system, as it was sold out.

Apparently, Walmart and Amazon didn’t have any available online either.

“It’s not ideal, I won’t kid you,” Sony’s Jack Tretton said of the situation. “But I firmly believe we’ll get our hardware back in stock and keep selling God of War III for a long time.”

The previous two God of War games sold 8 million copies combined for PS2, and Sony is confident that the third installment will sell millions of copies as well, so it’s critical that Sony ship more PS3 consoles to retail as games move the most units within the first month of release.

Shortages are due to the price drop last year, along with the “it only does everything” marketing campaign – both of which helped the consoles beat out Wii for the first time in September 2009.

“We ultimately don’t make investments on a product-by-product or month-by-month basis, but rather we invest in our platform,” Tretton said, explaining Sonny’s marketing and support strategy.

“This game will pay off for us with the people who own a PlayStation 3 and the ones who will buy one in the future.”

SCEA’s communications boss, Patrick Seybold, told us earlier in the month that the shortages would last a bit longer, but Sony is doing everything it can to remedy the situation.

God of War III was released in North America today, and the UK gets it on Friday.

Sony should YLOD you through PSN if you don’t have a GOW3 savefile by the end of the week.

So much for the shortages being PR spin.

My order from Game has been dispatched today! Only ordered it 2 days ago. No shortages here i guess. Hopefully it’ll arrive a day early like my copy of MW2 did… although I am banning myself from playing it until I finish GoW2… must. resist.

There is already an install base of 33 million, sales should and will be significant. There are a number of online resellers with stocks of PS3s like a number of Ebay gaming outlets. I’m sure the more industrious consumers looking to get a PS3 for the game will find one.

I can’t imagine it’ll affect sales too much, tbh.

I dont see this harming GoW3′s sales. Its too much of an epic exclusive for people to not hear of when looking into buying a PS3. It might cause a slow start though.

I am 3hrs into the game (got it at midnight launch) and it is really amazing. There’s so much going on at once that i have to sometimes pause and close my eyes for a minute to give them a break.

Indeed it is exactly the same “style” of gameplay as God of War 1 and 2 HOWEVER there are tons of more variations to the playing ground that changes up how you use Kratos in combat.

I liked Dante’s Inferno fresh take on the same idea, but i found it far more repetitive.

    Bayonetta is just a joke.

    “Bayonetta is just a joke.”

I’m sorry, but I have to shake my head and laugh at the fact that the one game in your list that you mentioned whicha actually requires some sort of skill and ability to play well is the one you consider a joke…

I thought Bayonetta was a joke for its ludicrous design. Gameplay was decent but not enough to save it from its poor story, idiotic level designs, painfully awful costume designs, terrible voice acting, and horrific main character. Plus all the stop, giggle, throw out some sparkles with a dumb one-liner parts really stank it up for me.

Sorry Mike, just couldnt enjoy the gameplay as much as I wanted to.

Bayonetta was an ok game, but it just pales in comparison to God of War III.

    #18 4 years ago
  19. Michael O’Connor

The ludicrous design is part of its charm. And its story is irrelevant.

Games are called games for a reason, not stories. Because of a little thing called *gameplay*. And as far as gameplay goes, Bayonetta is one of the most sublime, zen like gaming experiences you will find.

You’re disliking the game based on stylistic choices. That’s just close-mindedness.

I will never understand this obsession with story. If I want a compelling story, I’ll play a (decent) RPG or watch a movie. You’re basically paying for the chore of seeing the next cut-scene, which is utterly redundant in *game*play.

And God of War 3′s gameplay is absolutely godawful. How anyone can enjoy that combat is beyond me – it has absolutely no sense of skill or movement to it. Your blades just randomly slide through everything with no sense of contact until a arbitrary health-bar is depleted.

That kind of gameplay was out-dated when Devil May Cry was released. Now it’s just flat out archaic.

Games are a mix of story, atmosphere and gameplay, saying one is more important that the other I feel is just as negative as hating a game just because one of those 3 aspects is not very good. I can understand though, the gameplay of bayonetta is fucking amazing, perfect maybe, but I hate the characters entirely and I fucking hate the cutscenes, they’re abysmal. The gameplay is great but I lose a lot of drive to play the game because I honestly couldn’y give a fuck about any of the characters in it and don’t want to have to waste my time loading god awful cutscenes to just skip them, that’s if they don’t jam silly QTE into them :|

O’Connor just shut up while you still are breathing. If it wasn’t for the fact I knew you were Irish I’d swear you have a mental problem, but I know its just you daily alcohol consumption that is kicking in.

    Just go to sleep.

Hunam just summed summed up Bayonetta for me. Amazing gameplay everthing else not so much.

    TEA: Troll harder.

“Games are a mix of story, atmosphere and gameplay, saying one is more important that the other I feel is just as negative as hating a game just because one of those 3 aspects is not very good.”

It depends entirely on the game. Story and atmosphere is half of what makes Uncharted 2 a truly amazing game, but in the case of Bayonetta, its *meant* to be tacky and silly. If someone can’t appreciate that, they’re completely missing the point.

They’re hating someone for what it is, instead of what it isn’t.

Me and my friends just sat and laughed at the cutscenes while I was playing them. That’s the whole point.

    Hunam – Great points there!

That too makes sense, Mike. I just dont see the sillyness of Bayonetta as humorous. I dont think the developer’s choice of design complimented the gameplay at all.

Bayonetta has great gameplay but it’s overall “kitsch” style puts a lot of people off.

    Aren’t they doing a GoW3 bundle?
    Am sure it was announced.
Pretty sure they’ll have plenty of PS3s available.
They’re probably trying to drum up retail hysteria to boost sales.

    “Not even shite gameplay. *sighs*”

The only opinion I’ve heard in the entire universe thus far who thinks God of War 3 is shit. Mind you, it’s coming from someone who stated he’s never played the game, only the demo..

“The only opinion I’ve heard in the entire universe thus far who thinks God of War 3 is shit. Mind you, it’s coming from someone who admits he’s never played the game, only the demo..”

I don’t need to. The core gameplay mechanics, how Kratos controls, are exactly the same as they are in the demo.

The person watching me playing it at the time also thought it was terrible. I guess we’re both just at an age where we need more than flashy violence to enjoy an experiences.

    #28 4 years ago
  29. Eregol

    To be honest Michael
The demo is taken from chapter 3 of the game.
A point that you’ll reach in the game proper with more skills and toys to use and mix things up a bit.

Yes the core will still be the same, but there’ll be more to do with it.

If Edge gave it an 8 it’s hardly shit.

    #29 4 years ago
  30. Michael O’Connor

    I wasn’t aware I had to agree with Edge’s score. They gave Dragon Age a 5, and I consider it a 9.

It’s called personal opinion. And my personal opinion is that the core combat is absolutely terrible.

  31. DaMan

“kitsch” is certainly a very wrong word to describe Bayonetta.

it was deliberately done the way similar to DMC and it’s protagonist.

she’s actually a decent character. fair enough if you just personally don’t like it of course, but calling her a joke says more about your narrow mindedness and perception. I’m afraid many people are too one dimensional and shallow, thus can’t see past her appearance and seemingly “silly” lines.

also, GoW has never been anything serious gameplay wise. a casual button masher with flashy graphics. it actually pales in comparison with a wonderful, refreshing mix of DMC and Super Mario Galaxy that is Bayo.

  32. Phoenixblight

I got GoW3 last night at midnight been playing it off and on throughtout my opinion best God of War out no joke. They not raise the bar with technology but story so far is just godly. :P

  33. Mike Honcho

OMFG ….. first few hours of GOW3 ….. got down on my knees & thanked the heavens for my PS3.

If O’Connor considers GOW3 combat mechanics as “terrible” …. wonder what he would consider as great?

    #33 4 years ago
  34. Kerplunk

Bayonetta’s great and has a style that definitely sets it apart from its peers.

God of War is also great, but it’s only a button masher if you play it on the lower difficulties and choose to play it as a button masher. Try it on a grade where the enemies block and counter your moves and see how far button mashing gets you!

    Michael O’Connor said:
“The ludicrous design is part of its charm. And its story is irrelevant.”

    Let’s rephrase that shall we..

The ludicrous BADASSERY,ANGERASSERY,AND EPICNESS of the STORY is part of its charm. And its combat is irrelevant.

“It depends entirely on the game. Story and atmosphere is half of what makes Uncharted 2 a truly amazing game, but in the case of Bayonetta, its *meant* to be tacky and silly. If someone can’t appreciate that, they’re completely missing the point.”

No O’connor YOU completely miss the point. God of War is *meant* to have a simple combat to have the player focus on the EPIC battle that is ensuing, not the complicated combos he should be pulling off. Not all games should be difficult O’Connor GAMES are called games for a reason not CHORES.

“They’re hating someone for what it is, instead of what it isn’t.”

Didn’t you just contradicted yourself there? ;)

…it did not have to be this way O’Connor…this path is of your choosing…

I love the fact that Michael O’Connor shouts everyone down who criticises what he says about GoW3 with ‘It’s my opinion’ while ignoring the fact that he constantly re-iterates how shit he finds the game when someone says how good they think it is.

    It’s just opinion O’Connor.

    #36 4 years ago
  37. Edward Cullen

What’s wrong with this guy is when he doesn’t like a game he thrashes it, and puts a microscope on every tinsy-winsy flaw a game has. Which surprise! A thing every game have! And make horrible remarks about it, which I will go as far as calling it trolling.

Word of advise O’Connor, you can have your opinions but be careful with it. I’m not telling you to sugar-coat it. But don’t shit-coat it either.

What shortages? I guess must be somewhere but in NE NA, plenty of PS3 and xb360s on walmarts and gamestop shelves. Wiis are still hit and miss tho.

I just checked Walmart Online is offering 4 PS3 options, all of them IN STOCK.

This is PR if I ever heard it.

Oh and the grumpy old man gamer in my head says GoWIII is over rated. QTE isn’t gameplay. Gameplay lacks depth. Graphics, gore, and sex will sell this game.
