Monday, 15th March 2010 09:56 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Final Fantasy XIII has gone straight into into the UK charts at number one, with the PS3 version beating the Xbox 360 SKU with sales of 54 percent to 360′s 46 percent.

The game was released last week in the west on both platforms, with 5 million units shipped worldwide.

Over 96 million of the series has shipped since its beginnings over 20 years ago.

Top ten is below. Last week’s data is here.

  • 1 – Final Fantasy XIII (Square Enix, Square Enix)
  • 2 – Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (EA DICE, EA)
  • 3 – Just Dance (Ubisoft, Ubisoft)
  • 4 – Heavy Rain (Quantic Dream, SCE)
  • 5 – Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo, Nintendo)
  • 6 – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Infinity Ward, Activision-Blizzard)
  • 7 – Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing (Sumo Digital, Sega)
  • 8 – Aliens vs Predator (Rebellion, Sega)
  • 9 – Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo, Nintendo)
  • 10 – New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Nintendo, Nintendo)

This is not really surprising in one way, because I always expected the PS3 version to win this particular battle. It is a little surprising just how close it was, though – a far better performance from the 360 version than I was expecting.

Microsoft have to be pleased with that percentage. Who knows if their co-marketing of the game had any effect — every TV advert was 360 branded — but I imagine it’ll be chalked up as a win for such practises anyway.

Of course the UK is generally considered to be Microsoft’s stronghold in Europe, so this is likely to be their best performance this side of the pond. I can see much braying on the horizon for when the NPD numbers make themselves known, whichever side the handful of percentile fall.

Also the game is fantastic. I don’t care what machine you buy it for, if you’ve more than a passing interest in the series it deserves to be played.

I wonder how much of that was down to the reported differences between versions? Final Fantasy players tend to be internet savvy.

Heavy Rain hanging on in there makes me a happy bunny indeed. :)

Heavy Rain should jump back up next week, as the shops have finally got some stock back. I know I would have bought it this week if it was there. But I got bored of waiting and got FFXIII instead….

@dirigiblebill Yeah I’d be interested to know that too. I know I swapped my pre-order to the PS3 version when I heard of the differences.

Let’s be honest: most of the people who bought FFXIII are probably playing it over composite on their HDTVs. People on here and internet forums aren’t very representative samples.

If Sony was smart they wouldn’t bunch so many marquee titles together. I really think they’re hurting sales putting games out so close together. I really wanted to get Heavy Rain, FFXII, and GOW 3, but with them all being dropped in the same month, along with Bioshock and other titles, I cant keep up.

Aimless. Ya, the game is growing on me. It started out kinda blah, but the battle system is so interesting. I want to master it. I just got Odin, so I’m still have ways to go. The game is just amazing. It’s hard to put it down.

The closeness of that really does surprise me.
I very much doubt FFXIII will be in the top 10 for long though.
JRPGs are still niche in the west.
I expect to see GoW3 in the top spot this time next week.

Id be willing to bet that the game has been played more on 360 really, exept there are thousands of people that downloaded it,therefore it wont show as a sell.

The second to the last straw has been drawn.

“People on here and internet forums aren’t very representative samples.”

I’m not so sure. JRPGs cater to quite specific tastes, and if there’s one thing my very brief stint in book publishing taught me it’s that numbered franchises have trouble attracting new audiences. You and I know that each FF is effectively its own game, but Joe Ignoramus will probably be thinking “Jeez, I have to play the first 12 to have a clue what’s going on? No thanks.” :)

See! Japanease-flavoured games can be successful on the 360! (Please make more multiformat titles so we can all play them.)

I’m way more interested in seeing the US numbers, though. I’m betting 75/25 in favour of the PS3.

54% to 46% is a much closer margin that I anticipated. I think it’s a much closer margin than many expected.

    Uhh, quick thing
The last week’s data link in the main post links back to the main post.
Someone might want to change that.

There are a lot more 360s in the US than PS3s. I think the 360 version will sell better there.

If the title of this article said 360 FFXIII beat the PS3 version some of you would be like, I knew it! :D

I’m not going to name names but they rhyme with Jerk and Poliath :D

Is it? For some reason I thought it was the other way around. Maybe it’s Europe I’m thinking about. Anyway, I’m still very curious to see how it does in those territories.

I would guess that in the states the xb360 will grab 60%plus of the sales between the two platforms for this game.

Yeah these are UK only numbers and 360 had a 1m advantage here at last count I thought (calling PT for figures). The US is very 360 heavy in terms of numbers. Europe as a whole finely poised.

I would expect the Europe wide numbers to favour the PS3 a little more and the US to be in the 360s favour.

54% to 46%? That’s a hell of a lot closer than I expected it to be.

Not surprising though, really. I honestly don’t know that many people with both consoles myself – they’re both still too expensive for most people to be able to consider that an option – so people just ended up buying it for whatever format they owned or preferred.

Nice to see both console playing nice in regards to sales, for a change. More customer is a good thing, for consumers and developers alike.

I think FF XIII on the PS3 outsell the 360 version in all parts of the world. It would be very interesting if Square Enix released the world wide sell numbers of the two versions.

  25. Eregol

The Jap figures alone would skew the figures way toward the PS3.

Great game on the 360, still dont understand the story. No problem with the story for 7,8,9 or 10, I just dont get this one, early days though.

  27. SplatteredHouse

It’s a success for 360? I call it more of a success for Sony. This could go to show the connection between Sony and the Final Fantasy brand won out; and, they also made those numbers without the kind of coverage the other console had in its favour. Sony spent little money or real resources in promoting XIII on a national scale, and they outsold the competitor reasonably comfortably, anyway.

I’m not convinced that the majority of people would necessarily have known the differences between versions. I just don’t think that consideration radiated too far from the blogs, etc. If they wanted to buy FF XIII, anybody would have just ordered it for whichever they preferred or owned, on the whole.

  28. Eregol

I think the Bayonetta factor may have played a part.
Some people with both consoles may have leant toward the PS3 due to the no disc swapping and the slightly sharper graphics.

O VG staff can you start posting the top 40 instead of just the top 10 please, i like seeing where some games are in the charts etc. :)

I’m surprised that some are surprised by how close the margin is. I don’t have the latest number but at one point last year, the 360 install base was almost double that of the PS3. Even with PS3 recent surge in sales, I doubt it’s caught up. So considering the 360:PS3 ratio and early report that there were more pre-order for the 360 version of game, it actually come as a surprise that it’s selling more on the PS3.
