Codemasters: PSP is a “bollocking useless waste of space”

PSP

Codemasters VP Gavin Cheshire has properly lashed out at PSP, saying it’s a “bollocking useless waste of space”.

Speaking in the latest issue of Edge (via EG), he said:

“Well, speaking as a person who bought a PSP, the problem was that I always thought – because it was a better screen than iPod’s – that I’d be doing more with it. But it was such a bollocking useless waste of space; just getting stuff on it was ridiculous.

“That was its downfall. Relatively speaking, [Codemasters] didn’t do too badly on F1 PSP. But regarding the future, I think they’ve got – well… no.”

And what about the PSPgo?

“PSPgo’s a lovely device,” said Cheshire. “[It's]really smart – but our senior VP bought one the day it came out and has a great story, because he ended up on some customer support line just trying to do basic stuff. He had to re-download his software, do an immediate firmware update, and that’s your user experience.”

Knives out then, innit.

That’s the standard user experience nowadays when confronted with gaming devices.
Updates, installs, patches, more updates, DLC ripoffs and you guessed it … some more updates …

It’s weird that he calls the PSP a waste of space but the PSPgo a lovely device.

@9 Do you really look like that pic on the SN site you linked here yesterday?

Man, you are ALL about the emo ;)

Incidentally, while harsh, he’s not wrong. The PSP is a pain in the ass.

“Because it was a better screen than iPod’s – that I’d be doing more with it.”

He seems to have mistaken a portable GAMES CONSOLE with a smart phone. Also, he only ever came across the PSP after the iPhone was out? What kind of game dev is he?

I have absolutely no idea what “SN” is.

Oh, right. Raptr.

E? Are you kidding me? Do some culture study.

That’s an album cover from the band Siouxsie and the Banshees, a famous band from the late 70s, early 80s. They are one of the most renowned post-punk bands of all time and hugely influential to many modern musical artists, including Garbage, The Cute, and Radiohead.

Emo? Dear god, don’t insult me.

This is what I look like: http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs176.snc3/20344_470506645113_554630113_10912123_5663721_n.jpg Not that my appearance has to do with anything.

@15

Thanks for the music history lesson, but I’m aware of, although clearly not that familiar with, Siouxsie and the Banshees.

I suppose by default I should be more knowledgeable about influential ‘post-punk’ bands of the 70s and 80s. Sorry – my bad.

Because they tried to make a Console game in a PSP. Developers need to think and make handheld games for PSP not Console variations. Look at DS, they make huge profits because they make quick and simple low budget cool handheld games, and not console versions.

I saw these comments on MCV, in fairness I actually think he’s referring to the PSP Go, or at least the functionality of downloading games from PSN to a PSP device.

The PC PSN software is complete crap, after downloading everything I couldn’t get it to connect to my PSP Go. I ended up connecting the Go to my PS3 and having to re-download everything to install it (plus I had to create a new user account because I unintentionally signed up a new PSN account on my desktop). I couldn’t connect my PSP Go directly to the ‘net because the Go doesn’t support WPA2 over wifi.

So I do think he has a good point, although Codemasters themselves have been even bigger “bollocking useless wastes of space” for well over a decade now.

I personally think their peak was reached with the old home computer games, Dizzy and the like, and they’ve never achieved that standard again since. But that’s before the time of the majority of spods around here, I think, except for Blerk maybe… ?? Not sure.

Anyway, as a computer technician, I feel for Sony in this case. If you’d seen the things that some people had done with their computers…

The long and short of it is that there’s no way to idiot-proof anything, an idiot is an idiot, and no amount of friendly GUIs or simple installation procedures is going to change that. And if a person has an issue with a console, any console, they should be banned from computers for life.

In my mind, Codemasters will only be remembered for Colin McCrae Rally. Everything else they’ve done, is worth forgetting about.

To be fair on Codemasters, Race Driver: Grid is an absolutely amazing racing game.

Anyone else hate how slow dizzy moved so would constantly jump and then lead to the worst death ever of jumping off the edge of a screen only to land in water on the next screen and die, fuck me thats annoying

I used my PSP as an MP3 Player when Sony Connect was up and Running..downloaded $100′s worth of songs and albums, and then BAM…Sony Connect shut down!! Now I am using it as a Comic Book Reader…The HUGE ASS issue is they need to put everything in one place just like iTunes…if they keep farting around something like the iPad may come out and blow the PSP out of the water…I really like my PSP, but this start up and quit and start up and quit is driving me crazy…
