Carmack will “try” to have Rage on iPad and iPhone
Post-apocalyptic actioner Rage is coming to all touchy Mac platforms under the sun, if id code legend John Carmack has anything to say about it.
“Apple doesn’t give us anything ahead of time either, so haven’t put hands on it ourselves,” he said of iPad in a GDC chat with Kotaku (thanks EG)
“But we certainly are expecting to try to have our Rage title for the iPhone, iPad, whatever, working across there.”
Bethesda was announced as Rage’s publisher in December, taking the game away from EA. It’s out this year for PC, 360 and PS3.
Bethesda bought id in June last year. iPad releases in April.

Except… that ID didn’t make Wolfenstein (that was Raven) and John Carmack invented the FPS and the Deathmatch, which makes him a legend in anybody’s book. The guy codes FROM SPACE!

Number 1, 11 000 game devs and counting have lost their jobs over consoles
Number 2 I have alot more games to play on my pc than any console!

The last Quake made by id was Quake III : Arena
Quake IV was made by Raven.
As far as game design is concerned, it’s more the domain of Tim Willits and Matt Hooper at id. John Carmack only does the programming.
As for the personnal wealth of John Carmack, he is the only developer who founded a Space company (that’s not cheap), and Armadillo Aerospace won the two levels of the X-PRIZE Lunar Lander Challenge (That’s more impressive than developing a game engine).

juding from a lot of the commets he has made about pc gaming I think he should to stcik to coding because he knows very little about pc gamers or pc gaming.

Carmack isn’t into games for the money, he’s into it because he enjoys the technological challenges and is a genius at coming up with new, efficient ways of doing things. Unlike say Crytek, who have never heard of the word “optimisation”.
The Rage engine is pretty much the first engine Carmack will have made with a full team, in the past he has been able to do 99% of the coding himself, but these days the complexity of developing a high-end engine is monumental.
