Rein “blown away” by OnLive

Epic VP Mark Rein’s has said that playing with OnLive was an excellent experience, and that only the “super hardcore” will notice lag.
“I was just blown away how well it plays,” he said, speaking to Gama after playing Unreal Tournament 3 on the Clud service at DICE last month.
“If you’re that super hardcore player who plays it on the most asskicking-est PC money can buy, you notice lag… maybe everything isn’t turned up to 12, but if you’re a gamer who doesn’t want to go erect a big fancy pc like that… it’s really fun.”
OnLive has now confirmed it’s to launch in the US on June 17 at $15 per month, plus the cost of games.
OnLive allows you to play games on any computer, theoretically, will the games themselves being played remotely.

Problem is not about the lag. Problem is about video compression, true 1080p HD and if you really can play the game with PC graphic settings.
5 years and if all problems will be solved then thats going to be a real deal.

(Rein then softly pats his back pocket with the $50,000 Onlive endorsement check in it)

The problem for me is that I am not totally confident that the service will survive, therefore there is no way I am going to spend money on games when I’m not positive they’ll be there tomorrow. I believe many others will feel the same, thus creating that initial install base will be difficult

if you can afford a 50-100 mb internet speed
for supporting 1080P FULL HD
then .. why you have a crappy PC ?
think about it

It depends in the aera you in live. If you live to far away from the super computer you find lag.

i dont buy his comment only the hardcore will notice lag. even if most dont perceive it – it will subconsciously affect them to a lesser extent. I remember Factor 5 saying people dont see low framerates, however, that doesn’t mean that they dont experience poor fps in the form of unresponsiveness that they then put down to poor controls.
Killzone had considerable lag: c. 166ms, some people moaned about the controls, guerilla answered by narrowing the dead zone on the control sticks which mitigated the problem.

a lot of people want onlive to work but we have to be honest and speak the truth. Even if onlive does not work the tech if worked on will only get better over time. It’s not something you should just give up on right away.

Graphical snobbery.
I enjoy games on the PC with very modest resolutions, sometimes as low as 800 x 600. And based on the sales of the Wii, most people don’t *need* nor *want* graphics of that resolution.
Did you completely miss the point of OnLive entirely? It’s to give people who don’t have a PC powerful enough to play these kind of games the opportunity to do so.
Of course they’re not gonna be playable at 1080p. Lord…
And you know, for slow games – turn based strategy titles and the likes – this service will work just fine. I wouldn’t want to try playing something like Bayonetta (Yes, I know it’s not on PC. It’s just an example) on this thing though.

@Michael you are captain obvious. I KNOW, but Onlive wannabe for hardcore audience. You understand, that, right?
+ If you can spend enough money for the internet or games you can buy a decent rig or a console. Until Onlive will deliver true HD no way this thing is going to rock among hardcore gamers or even sell. + there is a piracy for now.

No, in fact, I don’t. This is the first time I’ve heard anyone state that this was for the “hardcore” audience. I was distinctly under the impression that this for people who *enjoy* video games but can’t afford / don’t want to shell out on a gaming PC.

This was maybe missebd but Onlive will be free in some parts (http://blog.onlive.com/2010/03/11/more-news-from-onlive/)
You can rent and play demos for free at the expense of social features. I expect that when you buy a game with the subscription you and you stop paying it, you’ll still be able to play it on the onlive game portal.

@ killercow
That’s a great idea they’ve come up with there. Being able to try out the demos will be a great way to gauge the quality of the service. Will definitely be giving that a spin.

@16 i’m most excited about the rental part where i can rent a 8 hour game and not pay 60$ for it.

Great way to ensure the money goes back to the developers and publishers as well.

Mark Rein is trying to pitch this to hardocre gamers, a market segment that absolutly values high end graphics and spends the money to get that.
If OnLive wants to compete in that market, it needs to deliver on par with HD consoles and high end PCs.
That’s always how they presented themselfs, demo-ing the system with high end games like Crysis.
Gaikai is going for the casual crowd. They pitched a low res Flash window and no fancy visuals with a slight amount of lag.

You know I’m pretty skeptical after all gametap was completely useless and the Phantom console which was supposed to be like this with some sort of cloud distribution was also a flop. But the technology looks sound and the demo they did at the university was pretty convincing. I think like Netflix you won’t get 100% HD all the time, it will probably say that 1080P HD is achievable if you have the bandwidth and if not it will compensate in real time to make up the difference. So just like netflix you’ll see the quality go up and down according to the lag time.

And on top of it in one of the interviews with the OnLive guy says that if you buy a game for their service and then if you don’t log in for like a month or two, your account is closed and your game is gone… That is like you put money into the Cloud and then its gone, bcos you didn’t log in…

I completely agree with loki and theevilaires. I recently met Rein and I was surprised how biased he is. He just can’t appreciate if you are using any other technology. I saw him dancing on the floor of Moscone West saying “Gimme more money, Gimme more money” and that’s what he is all about.
