Newell: Portal 2 will take the concept “big”

Valve boss Gabe Newell’s told 1UP that a Portal sequel will allow the studio to take the entire concept and explore it on a much grander scale.

“One of the nice things about The Orange Box was it allowed us to try out a couple of different things, and Portal really seemed to resonate,” Newell said, speaking at GDC.

“We got the signals that we wanted – this is what people liked; this is what people didn’t like. And to us, it was like, ‘OK, now we know how to take this big,’ so that’s what we’re going to do with Portal 2.”

The original Portal lasted only 3-4 hours.

The sequel was teased and finally announced last week, and will release as a full-price product towards the end of the year. Newell reckons it’ll be a new benchmark for the company.

“It’s the best game we’ve ever done,” he added.

It’s a PC, Mac and 360 release.

Portal was lovely and amazing precisely because it was small and unfettered by the demands of ‘big’ games. Please don’t turn it into the trashy mess that HL2 became, Gabe!

i’m thinking ep3 is gonna have to come with a sizable multiplayer component, be it in the half life world or another team fortress

Come on you guys. HL1 was amazing until Xen, which could easily be cut out and no-one would give a fuck. Then, HL2 original was OK until it turned into a shockingly transparent Jesus/Messiah story and Gordon turned from average everyman trying to escape (HL1) to unwitting-yet-universally-renowned saviour of the people (HL2). Then the Eps came along and the purity went out the window in favour of weird fetishism and implausible romances (Alyx’s arse, Alyx being love in Gordan), idiotic cartoon characters (that angry professor and his ridiculous bomb thing contrived soley to make killing striders more difficult. WTF?!?) and outright bullshit (Alyx dying in a cutscene EXACTRY LIKE – or rather shamlessly ripped off from – Diz’s death in Starship Troopers) and then that god-awful ressurection sequence and, in a first for the HL series, miserably shit sentimentalism when some her dad dies. THIS IS NOT GREAT. THIS IS AWFUL. AND THIS IS THE FUTURE OF PROTAL.

I absolutely insist that an essential part of Portal’s shining glory is that it wasn’t tainted with the grubby buisiness of becoming ‘a experience’ with ‘characters you can believe in’, ‘meaningful relationships’ and all that bullshit that Americans can’t help but try to cram into games that really, genuinely don’t need to be amazing, shining examples of the art.

I think Ep 3 has been canned in favour of Half Life 3.
