Molyneux: PS Move “not as big a step as Natal”

natal3

PlayStation Move isn’t as great an advanced as Natal, Peter Molyneux’s told Eurogamer at GDC, following the PS3 motion controller’s reveal at the San Franciscan show earlier this week.

“We’re not really surprised, are we?” said the Lionghead boss when asked of his opinions on the peripheral.

“I mean, at E3 last year we saw they were having a wand, and that’s kind of what I expected. It looks like they’ve taken a step forward but it’s not as big a step as something like Natal, I don’t think.

“This is purely me talking personally, but I think maybe it’s slightly more a device for the core than it is for the casual market, because I think it’s quite precise.”

Molyneux’s Fable III uses Natal in an as yet undisclosed way, with both Natal and Move hitting before the end of the year.

The developer conceded he was interested in Move as a game-maker, but felt the device might “confuse” consumers.

“As a designer it’s another one of those things I’d love to get my hands on and to play around with,” he added.

“As a consumer, everyone’s talking about motion control now – I mean, I’m starting to get confused. It’s kind of like the arms race, with the Wii MotionPlus and now the Sony Move and now I’m getting kind of confused.”

Hit this for everything on Move’s GDC announcement. Fable III releases later this year.

So he’s pretty much confirming Natal is casual only?

I think that Microsoft gambles a lot with Natal, whereas Sony plays it a bit safer with Move. We will see if this will pan out…

He’s right, in that it isn’t as big a step as Natal. However it is functional, something Natal still has yet to prove to be.

Heh heh – that’s probably not the best way to have phrased it, Peter! :-D

Personally I think they’re both on to a loser. But what the hell do I know – I didn’t think anyone would buy the Wii or the DS either! :-D

So, is he saying that Natal isn’t precise?

There’s no way this man should ever do PR. Why does he keep getting wheeled out? It’s like having another Pachter around.

I also love the fact that he’s the Lion’g'head boss by the way Pat.

Yeah, t’know i hadn’t really read that into it at first glance, but you’re right. You could easily infer from that, that Pete is saying Natal isn’t going to be accurate enough for hardcore games… lol.

@6 Yeah, Right… I would love to ask him: What are you think about Playstation Eye? Hmmm?

He’s right, but that’s why Natal is much riskier IMO. Sony is taking the view the Wii has set the current baseline for motion controls and is seeking just to take it a small bit further, with more options via camera, HD graphics, etc.

MS is trying to outdo the Wii and push the next big thing. This is much riskier. With the Wii Nintendo ‘bottled lighting’ to use that phrase. MS are trying to do the same.

Looking at Wii sales and with Sony now allowing companies to easily put the same game on both Wii/PS3 – Natal runs the risk of being the odd one out and only finding a base with a small niche while the majority go for the baseline established by the Wii.

Over priced and will under deliver.

HE’S CONFUSED!!! LOL…
HOW CAN SOMEONE BE CONFUSED!?!?! ONLY MY GRANDMA’… SHE HAS ALZHEIMER! LOL!

The only confusing thing around here is Natal.. that’s confusing! No one knows how that will work how cool, or annoying it is…
the wands is something that we ALREDY know. there’s nothing confusing about it..
I think Molyneux is getting old, adopting childs like Mylo and so on.. that’s it.

I’m sure Natal is a big step.. but I’m taking it as a test on Xbox360… something we will only see its true potential in the nextgen…

so far its just an improved PS EYE, like the PS Move is from the Wand.

There.. don’t get me wrong, I love you Molyneux!
