Sony Santa Monica working on two new projects

Sony Santa Monica has announced it has two new projects in pre-production at the studio: a week before its most recent project, God of War III, launches.
John Hight, product development director at the studio, told MTV:
“We’re jumping right back in, I’ve got a small concept team working on our next product for us.
“We’re actually gonna do something different this time, we’re gonna have a short-term concept, a game that we hope to turn out.”
So when can we expect to hear of this new project?
“I’m not gonna say when.”
Oh.
“But then, we have a much longer term concept team going through, two teams going on at once.
“One with a kind-of long-range, ‘Here’s what we’re gonna do years down the road’, and then another one that’s, ‘Here’s what we’re gonna do as the very next project’.”
Awesome stuff. As for now, God of War III is due out for release next week for PS3.

Nope. It can’t be GoW IV, considering GoW III is the end of the main trilogy, and I highly doubt they’d start another main canon story with another character.
My guess is they’re both new IP.

Gow 3 is going to do huge numbers round the 5m or 6m mark id say so Sony may want to do a sequel. I hope it is two new ips though.

Even though i’d love for a god of war 4 i hope they’d leave the trilogy justice and leave it as is, its the only trilogy thats fuckin amazing without them turning it into “coka-cola”…. three words “Call Of Duty”….

It’ s gonna be two spin- offs.
First one will feature one of the hookers Kratos laid in the former games.
Second one’ s main protagonist is Zeus’ s beard on a mission to bring down Kratos…

Hindle, you aren’t being serious with the 5 million thing, are you?

@4 GoW has NEVER done those sorts of numbers. Even when the install base was gangbusters, and you expect a directed single player experience, sans multiplayer to do 5-6mil?
Insane, and insanely wrong.

Im talking total sales it will do those numbers and as Uncharted 2 has surpassed 3.5m and is still selling as we speak id say Gow 3 will easily do it. Also GOW is way bigger then the Uncharted brand as its more established.
The reason the first two Gow games didnt do those numbers is like you say Pud the install base was too big. The Ps3s userbase is entirely made up of the hardcore.
Also the GOW collection which was 2 very old Ps2 games charted at position 19 in the November NPDs which is the most competitive month in the whole of the year for the USA.

The only credit there is to that argument is that GoW2 was late in the hardware cycle, and GoW1 wasn’t part of an established franchise.
So MAYBE GoW3 will perform better than Uncharted, but I doubt it.

How is it crazy Daman, if Uncharted 2 can do 3.5m and thats very niche franchise im pretty sure Gow will pass it.

Uncharted is by no means niche. It’s pulpy and generic by design!
God of War might do slightly better or slightly worse, but don’t overestimate the series, it’s never sold amazingly well.

I think a pre-quel would be acceptable. Show how Kratos came to be as powerful as he his. Go deeper into his backstory.

Its niche as its got romantic comedy elements in it, the first Gow game did round the 3m mark. I wont overestimate it if you dont underestimate it.

This isn’t a tit for tat situation. And Uncharted has the romantic depth of Transformers 2.

I think it’s about time these guys got a break from God of War. It’d be interesting to see what else they could come up with freed from the shackles of the series. Not that those shackles are necessarily bad, but… you know.
