PC software sees $13.1 billion revenue in ’09

PC

PC gaming? Dead? We spit at you. The PCGA has gathered research showing software sales for the platform were up by 3 percent, bringing in a total revenue to $13.1 billion, in 2009.

However, despite the increase, sales of boxed games are down by 20 percent for last year.

There was growth declines for Europe and the US by 10 to 15 percent, but there was an increase for Asia.

“The most notable trend in recent years has been the movement to digital distribution and payment for subscriptions, and the growing popularity with consumers of online games as a service,” says PCGA president Randy Stude.

“In 2009, we saw North America and Europe experience a rapid uptake in purchasing virtual items. This model is what drove growth in Asia, and we think it is just starting to come to Western markets.”

There you have it. Go eat humble pie, PC haters.

Is that quote about boxed games correct? The release from the PCGA web site says …

“However, the biggest downturn was in retail boxed sales of PC games, which now accounts for less than 20% of total revenue.”

It could be down 20% too – just wondering.

So, the only ones profitting through PC game sales, would be the developers and the publishers right?

PC gaming always has and always will be bigger than console gaming. Its just because PR twats from publishers and lazy developers cant be bothered to develop for the PC any more – so they create scare stories that the PC is in decline.

Its no mistake that LAME/Station sales are down – hardly any PC games on their shelves and its known that the PC format has a much higher profit margin that console games.

The PC model has shifted to digital – a place consoles will eventually end up. If you take in to account digital and non LAME/station store sales for Bad Company 2, you will see that yet again PC sales of the game easily out sell the PS3 and either just about beats or comes close to the xbox.

The PC simply has a much greater install base than all the consoles put together.

This is good news for PC gaming in general. Now, if they actually started to collate all of the PC sales data then we would get a much better picture.

As for a few comments above, who do people know whats in the report when you have to pay to get it? At some point it will be leaked on the interwebs, but until then we can only work on the areas they have said.

I would also like to see the revenue for each individual console as well, as I can probably assume that they will be much lower than the PC revenue.
