Most people on my friends list are still playing MW2, 3 or 4 are playing BF:BC2, one person is playing this, and everyone else is split between other random games like FIFA 10, COD4 and that XBLA stunt bike game thingy that I can’t remember the name of right now…

Sure you can use the text to see if you think it’s a high 9 or a low 9 if you want to take it to that. I don’t think a 10 score means a perfect game either – simply that it is outstanding, it can still have some flaws.

I may not be as critical as others, but I threw it on yesterday and was quite literally blown away. From the opening sequence to the gameplay – I’m about 3 hours in and enjoying every minute so far.

what I meant is that sometimes they don’t have the decimal places.

or sometimes it can be hard to choose between ie an overall ‘good’ and a ‘very good’. say, if a game is truly refreshing you can rate it a perfect score, despite some technical flaws.

That’s where I think review scores have the most value. If the reviewer scored it 9/10 then that is what they scored it. If the review read more like a 10 then there was something on balance that the reviewer wasn’t expressing well enough.

Other than using the score to quantify the text of the review (as above) I tend to put more emphasis on what is written and how that relates to what I want out of the game. A good review is not one which matches my own opinion, but one which is clear in expressing why the resulting score was given.

Honestly I wasn’t impressed in the couple of hours I spent with the game. I will get a better feel when gamefly delivers my copy today or tomorrow. Maybe it will get better, but so far way too much bad story.

Review scores aren’t always an indication on how good a game is. In the same way an IQ score only measures how good someone is at an IQ test, review scores only indicate how much professional reviewers like the game. While a reviewer may rate a game on how original it is or in keeping with current trends a gamer might judge a game on something preposterous like how fun the game is to actually play.

I was a bit sceptical because of the reviews as well but I played it and I can tell you most of them are wrong. It’s brilliant! It’s seems to me that reviewers are full of shit. Final Fantasy XII scored huge scores and I just gave up on that game, it bored me so much.

I get the feeling this is one of those games which people will buy just because of the name on the cover. I’ve lost count of the number of people I’ve seen saying “I’ll buy it, no matter what the review scores”… which seems mental to me, but no accounting for individuals I guess.

…and yeah, like NG said, this is just what they’ve shipped to stores. Who knows how it will actually do.

When I turned on my 360 last night I had 20 friends online, precisely none of whom were playing FFXIII. I surmise everyone who wanted it bought the PS3 version.
