Rock Band 3 out this holiday, will “revolutionize” genre

rockbandlogo

Harmonix just confirmed that Rock Band 3 will release this holiday season.

Said the firm on Rock Band’s Facebook page:

“Harmonix is developing Rock Band 3 for worldwide release this holiday season! The game, which will be published by MTV Games and distributed by Electronic Arts, will innovate and revolutionize the music genre once again, just as Harmonix did with the original Rock Band, Rock Band 2 and The Beatles: Rock Band. Stay tuned for more details!”

There’s no more detail right now, but keep watching for updates from GDC.

That other music game that was announced today which actually uses real instruments seems pretty revolutionary to me

I agree… a game that actually teaches people to play for real is revolutionary.. I’m betting RB3 won’t be, they probably have a “create your own and share” feature as if that is “revolutionary”.. Over sell and under deliver

I do think in all seriousness rock band/guitar hero need their own itunes style service or to let you use your own mp3s. If audiosurf can do it then why not them?

@onlineatron

Yeah but im pretty sure they will still keep it pretty mainstream and user friendly

this on the other hand if pulled off correctly will actually teach you to play the songs you love, thats as long as it gets some decent backing by bands

@8 Agreed.
Would be nice to just listen to the tracks purchased on your console. Not asking to transfer them to your iPod or whatever, just to ability to listen to them.

Also, im hoping they keep up with allowing songs from Rock Band 1 & 2 to be moved to 3.

i’m pretty you’ll use the dlcs and songs from RB1 and 2 …. after all they came up with the idea .

Should do.
And Rock Band is much more a platform than a game, so songs should be able to move around easily… for a fee of course ;)

Rock Band 3 will be the last Rock Band / GH / etc game I buy. There’s really no need for constant sequels when they can just build on the existing platform (I’d be happy enough paying for “upgrade packs”).

Just my opinion of course. :)

I don’t see your problem psycho, for buck to song ratio you always get more with a disk at least. I always welcome a new Guitar Hero because I know paying for 70 new tracks off their store would bankrupt me, but if I wait a few weeks I can get those songs for a erm… song? Well, 20 notes at least.

If I liked everything on the disc, that would probably be the case… but I’d be surprised if I like half of the stuff on each release. Probably far less.

When it comes to Rock Band/Guitar Hero my taste in music isn’t generally paramount, I enjoy a lot of songs on the games I’d never listen to elsewhere, it’s just how catchy or fun the song is to be a part of, even lame ass pop songs can be great fun. Leave music snobbery to your iPod and just bash out some catchy tunes I say.

To be fair psychotext RB2 is “rather old” , so it’s not as if it was yearly milked and washed up franchise like Guitar hero (spin off asides of course) .

And each rb did feature some pretty neat innovations . So hardly just “upgrade packs” . That label would be for guitar hero constantly playing catch up , and following the EA sport way .

I agree with Psychotext, especially after GH5 which had a HORRIBLE track list. I liked maybe 4 songs on the whole disc. HORRIBLE tracks

But then again it’s gh’s fault . Wich is no surprise , their game sucked since Harmonix left and did RB .

They are done without any kind of soul , so it’s no wonder they would pander to the lowest denominator and quality for tracks selections

I’d point out as well , that unlike some here , i’m in no hurry of seeing any mp3 being played in a rb/gh title .

Why ? Because i dont believe yet that any upcoming (at least not till new consoles) RB title would be advanced enough to features the proper crowd cheering , proper band gestures , good and yet fun enough charts for most mp3 tracks , and let’s not even consider yet lipsync .

Imo it would probably just feature some predetermined shows and motions for a set genre (metal , pop etc…) , and with a few random variants . Like those game already but worse , since lacking the finishing touch and editing done with dlc and disc tracks .

All of wich is more important to me than access to virtually any song .
I might feel otherwise if so many songs i enjoyed werent already featured in RB 1/2 , but still …

My only complaint so far , would be the 3 song packs systems that needs to evolve . IF you are not going to feature an artist’s whole discography , at least reach for the entire album , rather than a single or the cheaper songs .

I consider the spinoffs as part of my equation. (I own Lego Rock Band and Beatles Rock Band)

“Rock Band 3 will be the last Rock Band / GH / etc game I buy. There’s really no need for constant sequels.”

1) There are not (constant sequels) of Rock Band. Rock Band 2 was released in 2008.

2) Why would it be the last one you buy consider it will have a completely new track list with likely in the region of 100 songs? Especially if lets you import your songs from the first two games? Just consider how many songs that is…

3) There are “upgrade packs”. But that would be a retarded way to focus on the franchise. It would not only fail to keep interest in the franchise going, since sequels build continued interest, but it would also limit their ability to add new features to the series.

I’ve already most of that… but here it is again:

1) Other than Rock Band 2, there’s Lego, Beatles and coming soon, Green Day. Spinoffs, perhaps… but they’re still essentially the same game with different music. From my point of view, I’ve seen one of these every year.

2007 – Rock Band
2008 – Rock Band 2
2009 – Beatles / Lego Rock Band
2010 – Rock Band 3

Is there really a need for this to be a yearly franchise? We’re not talking about Madden or Fifa here.

2) Because I have no interest in most of the songs on the disc. I’d rather continue to buy a songs here and there… ones I know I like.

3) I don’t really care about their business model. Nor if I’m honest do I particularly care about new features. All I really care about are new songs. Also, if there are upgrade packs, I haven’t seen them (unless you’re talking about song packs, which are something else).

But let me be clear… I don’t expect people to agree, this is just how I (I’d make that bold, but there’s little point) feel about it. There’s really nothing I could see RB4, RB5, RB6 etc giving me that RB2 doesn’t. Hence, I wont be buying any more of the games in future.

well technically spin offs are spin offs , so it’s still hardly a yearly franchise . There is a reason none could bear the name rock band 3 .

Especially when those spin off are very specific in their content and targets .

See i absolutely dont care about the beatles as a band (i know i’m an heretic) , so my last rock band title still remains rb2 … like most people .
Like you said we are not talking about fifa or madden , so let’s not act as if it was the same phenomenon .
