SCEA: 2010 will be one of PS3′s “best years ever”

SCEA comms boss Patrick Seybold, speaking ahead of GDC this week, has told VG247 US ed Stephany Nunneley that, while PS3 games hit their “stride” in 2009, this year is going to be the best yet.
“We’re expecting 2010 to be one of our best years ever,” said the exec.
“It’s a great time to be a gamer in 2010.”
Seybold added that acquiring LBP dev Media Moplecule, rumoured this morning to be hard at work on a sequel for the end of the year, added yet more solidity to an “incredibly deep and talented in-house development” facility.
“Games on PS3 have started to really hit their stride in 2009 and we don’t expect any slow down in 2010,” he said.
“There’s a lot of great content coming in the near future including the titles you mentioned [Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, MAG, God of War III - Ed], but you also can’t forget another big exclusive coming later this year is ModNation Racers.
“ModNation Racers will really further set in stone that the idea that we started with LittleBigPLanet of ‘Play, Create and Share’ is only available on PlayStation, and really taps the creativity of PlayStation 3 owners and the power of Playstation Network.”
Sony is go in San Francisco this week. The company is holding a press conference this Wednesday alongside the start of GDC and is expected to announce a date and partner list for Arc tomorrow.

I just can’t see an LBP2.
It’s not very Media Moleculish.

@PUD: LBP 2 as “Arc” launch title?

Even then, it’s something they’ve clearly shown as an update, patchable.

Is Modnation Racers really a ‘big exclusive’? I’ve been thinking of it as a mildly amusing oddity, I can’t imagine much wailing and gnashing of teeth over its exclusivity from the Microsoft camp.

Last year was “thier best year ever”. This year, again, and next year will probably be the same as well.

its only been 5 years, if each new year isn’t the ‘best’ year, then they’re doing it wrong innit

Which is all perfectly possible and fine. In fact more or less guaranteed given the poor start they set themselves up with a couple of years back.

Yeah, I’m surprised at the sudden focus on Mod Nation Racers. It was revealed as something of a PSN curio, but Sony have really put their shoulders behind it in recent months.
It sure looks fun, and I’m hearing great things about the track editor.
It leads to a bigger question I suppose, is play, create, share something which is really that popular? I know LBP did respectably at retail, but it was heavily reduced mere months after release. Sony seem to have a lot of faith that if they stick with it, they’ll get a breakout hit and be able to run with it.
Time will tell I suppose.

Well, I’m glad to hear to Sony start saying things like this. Sony seem to have gone from super arrogant, to super quiet in recent months, and letting MS do all the hyping up.
So it’s good to see Sony striking back a little bit.

@Blerk, yeah, even from the Sony camp not too many people are interested.
It seems like a complete waste, and I’ve been cold on it, since it’s reveal last year.

I believe them, but i really hate how Sony started with PS3 this generation.
but yes, in 2009, Playstation 3 was on fire and 2010 looks really good.

Erm… Pretty sure Killzone came out in 2009, no? And Uncharted has received XX’s of GOTY awards for 09 too.
So, GoW3, GT5 and MNRs is their ‘best year ever’ line-up so far? Their E3 better be hawt, or MS are going to drown them in decent exclusive titles. Already got Halo: Reach, Alan Wake, Portal 2, Fable 3, etc, and that’s before the big guns come out in June.

Modnation racers could be quite a big hit if they sort out the handling and graphics. The look of the graphics is fine, it’s just too poor a frame rate for what they are chucking around. Even in a very barren level it chugged. I think the framerate is a major factor in the handling too.
Good kart racers are very popular beasts, so getting one right would be a good. One you can mess about with to a large extent is also going to be good. Mario Kart Wii would be so much better if you could take out some of the stupid power-ups for example.
Level creation was frighteningly easy and well done. That is currently the ace up the sleeve. Sort out the rest to acceptable levels and you could have a big hit. It’s not as charming as LBP but it’s got lots of potential.

I think you are missing the motion controllers on both sides of the fences there. Arc and Natal are *the* big things for Sony and MS this year.

Yeah ok it sounds bad like that – but the point here is there is more to the package than the handling and graphics. The create side is seriously impressive – more so than LBP which I loved – because of the simplicity. I am basing the impressions on the Beta, so the possibility for changes in the areas I mentioned are entirely possible. Plus I do think a large part of the handling issues I had are related to the frame rate – so it’s just one little thing to fix really

Is it first party? If so, just parachute in the Dogs, they’ll get that frame rate up to 120, just like crazy Ken once prophesied.

It’s developed bu United Front Games who are multiformat – but it is also linked to San Diego Studios and being published by Sony so they may lend a had. A solid 30 would be a start though 60 is what a game of this type should aim for.

60 or bust I imagine. Graphically it’s hardly pushing the PS3 so I’d hope the folks who can get something like God Of War 3 out of the door can work a little magic over the current code base.

Interestingly and as if by magic … http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/03/05/modnation-racers-ps3-dynamic-props-more-than-just-speed-bumps/
“I’m happy to say that frame rate, load times and race cameras have all improved.”
There better be another demo pre-release.

I hope so. I tried building as bland and basic a track as possible, but it still had issues. I’m thinking there is something holding it back which is done fundamentally the wrong way.

Id imagine GT 5 and Gow 3 will outsell mainly all the 360 exclusives this year Halo Reach aside that is.

I doubt GT5 will come close to beating ME2 either.. maybe in Europe.. I don’t know a soul looking forward to GT5 around here.

GT5 isn’t out.. the prologue has been out considerably longer than ME2. by the end of the year i’m pretty sure ME2 will beat that. Also prolgue new is only 30$.. considerably cheaper, easier for people to justify that cost on a “meh” gmae.

@27 are you nuts? Gran Turismo is the biggest Playstation franchise.
GT5 can easily sell for 5-7 million units without any marketing.
