Sony announces SOCOM 4

Sony’s just announced SOCOM 4 for PlayStation 3.
This is the “Surprise Sony sequel” that was originally promised for GameTrailers TV tomorrow morning.
Original series developer Zipper is doing it.
The story takes place in South East Asia, where “a revolutionary army has seized control of a country bordering one of the world’s most vital waterways; threatening to disrupt he global economy,” according to the EU PS Blog.
“Your mission is to step into the well-worn boots of the Ops Com, a NATO Operations Commander of an elite, five-man squad. You must venture deep into inhospitable jungles, city streets and crumbling urban ruins to engage an army of rebel fighters and discover their plans.
“Although you’re vastly outnumbered, you’re armed with the latest weaponry and your men are second to none – but do you possess the stealth, speed and tactical thinking to lead them to victory? Time is not on your side: you have just six days to complete your mission. To emerge victorious, you must lead from the front, maintain control of the situation and fight with sheer intensity.”
The game will also feature 32-man online multiplayer. The first teaser trailer will be go live tomorrow on GTTV.
There are more details and shots over at IGN.
No date yet.

To be fair, there were lots of PlayStation fans *really* wanting a SOCOM 4. You can’t fault Sony for giving the people what they want.

@Michael, true.
But… Market is full of Modern Warferish shooters. We have great games. Some people enjoy MW2, Others enjoy Battlefield: BC2, Medal Of Honor and of course new Call OF duty title from Trashyarch.
They need to make a SOCOM title equal to Uncharted 2 level of polish if they want to sell it. Its a 1st party title and from 1st party you need to expect a serious game at minimum. SOCOM won’t sell if they won’t show us something interesting. Too much shooters at the market… Its the same thing with GH and Rockband.

The US audience for SOCOM was huge but Confrontation was pretty fucking shite, I bought it for the bundled official headset and played it a couple of timings before forgetting about it.

One question; who’s making the game?

SOCOM existed simply because there were no other half decent shooters to play online on the PS2.
Those days are long gone and forgotten. And to go up against MW2 and B:BC2 you need some something verry special indeed.

@14 Zipper Interactive
@15 you need not just something special… It must be something huge…
32 Players online is something. But if it is another MW2 copycat it won’t work.

To be fair, Slant Six Games made Confrontation and MAG while underwhelming was ambitious. If Zipper can deliver a great title, I’m all for it but GRAW far surpassed anything SOCOM did and I expect even more from the upcoming Ghost Recon title. The military shooter genre is just so crowded, I don’t know what they can do to stand out.

Eh. Disapointment. Never cared for SOCOM personally. Oh well.
Sony shouldn’t hype such a mysterious announcemnt for anything less than a STELLAR announcement. New Twisted Metal……new Jet Moto reboot……Resident Evil PSP trailer…….now THOSE are big announcments.
….to me at least

Anyone get the impression that this present days/near future setting is getting a little dull? And what do we get from Sony? Another game geared towards online gaming with good marines and evil terrorists. Don’t get me wrong, Socom franchise is great, but all we get is yet another shooter based on the very same concept as dozens of games available today.
@28 agrees, good. Didn’t see that one

@ Erthazus
There’s a market there because people want them. And the PlayStation fans have been *screaming* for this.
This might not interest many of us personally, but there are many, many people who wanted this game.

@ Erthazus
Quote from IGN article
“To help build a believable story, Zipper put the SOCOM 4 actors on a sound stage together and captured their movements and dialogue digitally as they performed each scene. Naughty Dog used a similar approach with Uncharted 2 in order to achieve more natural interactions among on-screen characters.”

If you go to the official forums you’ll see a lot of posts slamming Slant6′s efforts, it has had a large fanbase calling for zipper to return to the series. so delivering what their fans want cant be a bad thing…. also when hasn’t there been an abundance of shooters on the market?
