Rumour: IGN gives GoW III 10/10 in leaked score

godofwarIII3

If this screengrab is correct, IGN’s going to be giving God of War III a straight 10.

The image doesn’t show the full review, and was apparently grabbed after the site accidentally put the score live. If true, this will be the first full-mark review IGN’s given since Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots back in 2008.

The score’s been pulled from the game’s listing page.

Bear in mind this is about as difficult to fake as a common cold, so don’t go getting your “10/10″ tattoos just yet.

It’s not the first time IGN has done this. The US review score for Modern Warfare 2 leaked before release, showing the game got a 9.5. The site went on to say it was fake, but once the review went live it showed the exact score was 9.5.

The embargo for all God of War III reviews is Monday at 5.00pm GMT. The game launches on March 16 in the US and March 19 in the UK for PS3.

Thanks, TSA.

From the demo I would say it’s not worth 10/10.
A 9 yes, but not 10.
But hey ho, if that’s what they think, then they’re more than entitled to it.

Its a demo and from what i saw demo is not the real version of God Of War 3. Probably alpha version.

That is plainly obvious.
A demo gives you an idea of the game itself, but not the full product. Yes it has issues, but the main bulk is there to see.
I liked the demo, I have the game on pre-order. I was going to buy the game with or without it.
But like all previous GoWs it will have it’s issues. So, a 10? I don’t think so.

i think ign do it on purpose, mw2 and gow3….wheres the leaked reviews of dark void and deadly premonition?

@2 yeah i know what you mean, i haven’t played the demo or watched any trailers, but from the two blurry screenshots i’ve seen, i think it deserves an 8/10 ;)

Have they ever given a straight 10.0 to a game before? I don’t recall that ever happening in the past.

Yeah, to MGS4.

EDIT: oh wait no, for some reason doing a search on IGN shows it having an IGN Score of 10 but when you actually click on it its 9.9.

They’ve given a whole batch of games 10s.

GTA IV a couple of years ago was the first since SoulCaliber ten years earlier.

MGS4 was the last game to get a 10.

I don’t really count ign reviews nowadays, most of the reviews are written poorly and most of their high scores are reserved for whatever their hyping, that 8.9 review of bfbc2 the other day goes to show that

The demo is around 8 month old game code (it was the E3 2009 demo) so judging it on that alone is not the best idea since they have had ages to polish and improve the game.
It’s frightening to think what they have done to the game if it looked that good in the demo.

I believe the review process at IGN is to check the game boots up, assign a random score between 7 and 10 (based on how much ad revenue the publisher is supplying) and then go off to another bikini photo shoot.

I’ll wait for Eurogamer’s review, I seem to agree with most of their reviews these days (except for AvP).

Is anyone seriously going to not buy this game if someone gives it 8/10? The only thing that review scores seem to do on the internets is cause fanboy ranting. General consumers probbaly don’t even read reviews. If they like the look of something, they buy it. I bet Edge gives it a 7 ;-)

@10. dj deathstar: you think 8.9 is over- or underrated for bfbc2…? i think it´s a great game and something 9ish for sure but 8.9 is also a score i can accept eventhough it´s not fair compared to those hyped 9.5 mw2 got…

Yeah i meant underrated, with ign bumming mw2 at every possible chance and reading that BFBC2 review its like their not willing to accept that its as good as, if not better than mw2

I can’t belive people are claiming you can judge a game based on it’s demo here…

Anyway, Naughty Dogs President Evan Wells finished GOW3 and calls it “stunning”.

“I can’t belive people are claiming you can judge a game based on it’s demo here…”

After playing the demo, and then having seen a gameplay video that makes it plainly obvious that all the problems that exist in the demo are still in the finished game… this game is barely worth a 6.

Don’t worry, I’ll *rent* the full game just to find out for myself. But I’m not holding my breath.

I understand the point of making a demo. When I say “judge” i meant “rate” or “score”. You can’t rate a game based on a demo. That’s like rating a movie based on the trailer. Common sense really…

Play the complete, finshed version, then we can talk. Until then, your comments are pointless.

“You can’t rate a game based on a demo.”

You can if the core mechanics are absolutely atrocious and exactly the same as they will be in the full game.

“That’s like rating a movie based on the trailer.”

If the trailer shows an utterly generic concept with terrible acting and horrendous special effects? Yes you can.

“You might as well be saying…

No, I don’t. The core mechanics are in the demo of God of War 3 are atrocious. And the core mechanics are exactly the same in the final game as they are in the demo. I can confirm this myself simply from seeing gameplay videos of the *final* product.

A game can look as epic as it wants, but if the *core mechanics* don’t even work, it doesn’t matter.

In the unlikely event that the product that eventually gets in our hand doesn’t suffer from the same god-awful problems that exists with the mechanics in the demo, I will obviously re-evaluate my assessment of the game.

It’s amazing how butt-hurt people are getting over my *opinions*.

Its a good score IGN rarely hand out perfect scores these days. They are keeping a lot to thier chest so to say if its crap based of the demo is a bit stupid. If you dont like these kind of games then this wont sell you its as simple as that.

What i dont get is if people dont like GOW why are they commenting on a story involving GOW a poor attempt at flaming MOC.

#39

Michael O’Connor
04/03/10, 3:58 pm

Why the hell would I email Sony just because *I* don’t like the mechanics of the game? It’s not my job to dictate what a company must be. *I* think the game is terrible from what I’ve played and what I’ve seen.

Someone argued that I do not need to play the full game to make my assessment. I simply pointed out that when the problem that causes me to have such a low impression of the game exists in both the demo and the final product, then yes I do.

An observation they refuse to acknowledge or comment on. If they don’t actually want to discuss it, then why continue responding to my points? How about they discuss the *issue* instead of resorting to cheap insults to try and justify their unwillingness to argue the point?

I would not have even continued responding if people hadn’t chosen to argue my opinion.

What’s that saying again?

“I’ll criticise your opinion, but I’ll never criticise your right to have it.”

“What i dont get is if people dont like GOW why are they commenting on a story involving GOW a poor attempt at flaming MOC.”

Having an opinion on something is not flaming, my good man. People are allowed to have negative opinions on things, and they have *all* the right to express it.

“If you don’t like it, shut up,” is the most juvenile attitude in the world that anyone can possess.

Michael O’Connors right everyone. The core mechanics in GOW3 are atrocious, don’t even work, and the game really does have absolutely horendous special effects. We’ve never played the final game mind you, but when did that ever matter.. 5/10 (barely worth a 6 he stated) good attempt Sony! Thanks for setting the record straight Michael – you’re brilliance is blinding!

Nice to see you being mature as always. It’s nice to see someone would rather discuss the point instead of simply attacking anyone who doesn’t agree with them.

There are 3 major problems with the game. Its gonna be a long read, so let me know if you really want to read it first.

don’t worry everyone i have a plan

we’ll just wait until a game comes along that Michael O’Connor likes, and then we can all have OPINIONS about how terrible the game is

out of interest, what games do you like?

#47

Michael O’Connor
04/03/10, 4:14 pm

This is why I think it’s terrible.

1) The combat mechanics are trash. The way in which Kratos moves is floaty and unnatural; the jumping is especially regressive. Kratos himself always feelings like he’s walking on ice.

Even worse than this, there is absolutely no sense of contact between the way the weapons moves and the way they connect with the enemy. There is no sense of weight or force to the attacks – it feels like you’re attacking things with sting, not giant blades. The enemies are universally unresponsive.

It’s regressive design. Developers could *just* about get away with that in the PS2 days. Now? Now it looks feels terrible.

2) From an aesthetic perspective, the game fails miserably. Dante’s Inferno may have generously ripped its concept from God of War, but visually it is a far more atmospheric piece.

Dante’s Inferno created a morbid and harrowing vision of hell, without pulling any punches. God of War is impossible to appreciate aesthetically because of its over-saturated use of primary colours and cartoony presentation. I find myself cringing at God of War 3′s attempts at graphic violence – it tries too hard, and because everything looks so shiny and plasticine, it’s impossible to take seriously.

3) The QTE mechanics are also terrible. The buttons you have to press are so utterly random to make it feel like you are having any influence on the scenes on screen, and having the buttons resting on the outer edge of the screen instead of around the area where your eyes are focused (the places you’re meant to be attacking) only disconnects you from them even more.

All three of these problems exist in the full game. Yes, it *looks* epic, but if it *plays* badly, it doesn’t matter.

Like I already said, if they somehow manage to fix the utterly broken combat system, then yes, I *will* re-evaluate my opinion of this game once it comes out. Having seen videos of the final build where these problems still persist, I am not keeping my hopes up.

“Have you ever actually played a God of war game all the way through MO’C? The combat isnt the whole of the game. You dont like GOW so why are you in a Gow thread just doesnt make sense.”

You mean like the horrible puzzles? The puzzles made God of War II an absolute chore.

I own, have played, and have completed both of the previous games. Game mechanics have come a *long* way in those few years since then.

“i think the problem is that this doesn’t read like an opinion, it reads like a statement

a statement that we are all wrong for enjoying gow games when they are so clearly rubbish right!?”

No, that’s just how you interpreted it. You took the fact that my opinion was completely polarised to your own and took it as a personal attack, despite the fact there was absolutely nothing in the sentence to indicate as such.

#48

The Hindle
04/03/10, 4:15 pm

So you like Dantes Inferno is this correct? Dantes Inferno is an exact rip off Gow dude.

Your opinion makes no sense at all man you say God of wars combat system is flawed yet Dantes Inferno has the same combat system yet you praise that game. Its baffling.

#49

Michael O’Connor
04/03/10, 4:24 pm

@ The Hindle

No I didn’t. I said that Dante’s Inferno was *aesthetically* better than God of War 3. I think Dante’s Inferno is pretty poor despite that. I’d give it a 6, *maybe* a 7.

“out of interest, what games do you like?”

In the last couple of months alone? Dragon Age, Borderlands, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Demon’s Souls, Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, Bayonetta, Mass Effect 2 and Heavy Rain.

And I’m expecting Battlefield: Bad Company 2 to be all kinds of awesome.
