Something “major” happening at GAME and GameStation stores this morning

VG247 has learnt that all Game and Gamestation stores were told on Friday they would be opening half an hour later today as the result of a staff meeting this morning at 9.00am GMT.

The content of the meeting is unknown as yet, but, obviously, the news has caused an anxious reaction among staff. One described it as a “major” event, although it could just be a recap on last week’s closure news.

The group announced last Friday that it’s to close 43 of its stores and drop 247 jobs.

GAME will see 12 stores closed, premises that’ll be joined by six GameStation shops and 25 Debenhams concessions.

The move was made after a rough Christmas retail period for the company, with sales down by 18 percent.

We’ll keep you updated as we get word from the meeting.

Maybe they’re just all being told to take all the new boxes off the shelves and replace them with used copies.

    Sounds about right.

But yeah, given the recent closures, I wouldn’t be surprised if more was to come :(

Reminds me of the time when I worked at Virgin Games and one morning we were told to open half an hour later while they announced our takeover to Future Zone.

You hear that Mr. Anderson?… That is the sound of inevitability… It is the sound of your death… Goodbye, Mr. Anderson…

they should actually employ Hugo Weaving to travel from store to store breaking the bad news :P

I’d love to get fired by Hugo Weaving

Seems to be changes to working hours and/or shift patterns, according to GI.biz.

Spot on Blerk. There’s a two week consultation period where staff will have their hours evaluated, then another two week appeal period. What it means in the long run is that you may see some staff working fewer hours, some working more. Though overall there is a loss of hours.

Apparently, a bit of restructuring at GAME’s Head Office too. IMO, that’s where the biggest changes should be made. Very wasteful company, an example being their Bright Ideas program where staff can submit ideas and get cash if the idea is taken up. Great in theory, but they spent £13,000 on it last year and one of the ideas was ‘keep the trolley tidy’.

That and it’s a company who knew they were in trouble, but just spent a shit load on rebranding all of their stores, even the ones that are now closing.
