Tretton: Heavy Rain will sell “incredibly well”

Heavy Rain 3

SCEA president Jack Tretton has said he expects Quantic Dream’s Heavy Rain to sell “incredibly well”.

Speaking with Fast Company, the exec said: “I spent 25 years in this industry, and it’s rare you see a game that sells incredibly well and that impresses you.

“But when you go, ‘Wow! That’s the type of game I’ve never seen before!’ And I think Heavy Rain falls into that category. I don’t even now how to classify it or describe it.

“I read a review that said it’s the next stage of reading the book. You don’t have to be a gamer at all. I think if you read a book, unless you read the chapters in reverse order, the story is pretty much going to be the same.

“But with Heavy Rain, depending on what you do, you are going to get a different outcome every time.”

Heavy Rain releases for PS3 in the UK today after earlier releases in the week in the US and mainland Europe.

I’m not so sure. I hope he’s right, but I just can’t see it happening.

one employe of the store where i bought it said “uh, i hope its as good as it sells”

I think the statement “incredibly well” is very vague and it doesn’t say much. Instead he such give an estimated sales number. Will it sell better than 1.5 million world wide? I think that would be a huge success.

I must admit, it seems to be selling very well in Belgium at least. I walked into my local yesterday to see one copy sat on an otherwise empty rack. One of the employees then put what must have been around 20 copies next to it. I think it’s going to do alright.

I was up playing this until 2am last night (although I only started around 11pm). It’s really excellent, I don’t think it’s got much replay value, but the story and QTEs merge together really well to draw you in.

I don’t understand why you can only trigger the shower once though… ;)

i hesitate from calling the QTEs just QTE. they are implemented far better then any other ive seen in games and they are somehow a bit more then just QTE. I like to call them extendedQTE or advancedQTE.
at least its far from beeing the “QTE fest” it got called beforehand.

I just came back doing an errand in town. Got Heavy Rain while I was there.

Really want to play it now. :(

I’m properly pumped for it, though. Especially the Madison Chronicle in my CE. I’m going to download that asap. I didn’t really care much for the soundtrack anyways if I am honest. ;)

If this sells, we might have a gaming revolution on our hands.

Got it yesterday (HMV LE) and have played about 4-5 hours.

It’s the best game I’ve played this year.

Yes the controls can be janky and some of the textures and objects are flat…. but Goddamn i’m loving the pacing, story, characters, urgency, emotions etc.

@JC
The soundtrack is really good. Obviously I haven’t got the download but in game it’s incredible!

I’m very doubtful it will sell incredibly well. How much is that btw?

I predict it will sell incredibly well for a new IP with unusual game mechanics.

@ onlineatron

The best game you’ve played so far this year?
Really?

From what I’ve played yes.

Obviously Mass Effect 2 comes in a close 2nd… but Heavy Rain just about trumps it for being unique and exciting.

I really feel for the characters and some of the situations you’re put it are so hectic and frightening that i’m literately squirming around on my seat trying to keep my character safe.

Granted I can see a lot of people disagreeing with my opinion, maybe the controls or odd animation/vo will put them off… but for me it’s top notch!

I doubt it will sell “incredibly well”. Even if it does, I expect a great number of people will be trading in the game.

So, that means there’s going to be a tonne of pre-owned copies floating about in a few weeks time being sold at the expense of new ones.

God, I’m pessimistic today.

I can’t speak for sales, but I can vouch that the game is fucking awesome.

So what happened to all the “Heavy Rain is a glorified QTE fest” haters? They seem to have run a mile… *laughs*

I’m no hater, but I really wasn’t that impressed with the demo. It’s still nice to see such a leftfield game receiving such great praise – so game on, gamer!

I already beat this game and no desire to play thru again. It was a good 8 hour romp but i’m glad I Gamefly’d it. I would be pissed if I spent $60 on this, as @21 put it “Glorified QTE Fest” because that’s all I felt it was.. an immersive movie, NOT a game. The story being the biggest draw was rediculous, you had to SERIOUSLY suspend disbelief and just go with it, because there were holes you can drive a truck through.

I like a leftfield game too, but I just can’t justify this to myself.

I hate the acting, animation and interaction that I’ve seen. It just seems so arbitrary, and if the game were more sandbox, less scenebox, then there’d be more of your story.

But, ugh. I can’t get on with it. I will rent it, eventually.

The game is great but there are major issues, game breaking such as the sound goes out very often, also it will stop working like you can’t walk or the QTE icons do not show. I uninstalled the game and reinstalled it to see if that would solve the issue…Nope. The game is full of bugs like DAO prepatch. I will be trading it in on Monday because as stated it has no real replay value.
