Report – Final Fantasy XI to close this year to make room for FFXIV

According to a report on GameCrep, Square Enix is to shut down the online servers for Final Fantasy XI.
A human resources employee at the firm put up a personal blog which said the MMO, which has been up since 2002, will shut down this year to make room for Final Fantasy XIV.
That blog post has since been taken down.
When FFXI launched, it first appeared on PC before heading to Xbox 360 in 2005.
We’ll take this up with Square and hopefully get confirmation of something.

I can see many Tarus mourning this news…

Seems unnecessarily risky. What if a whole bunch of those players don’t want to move to the new game?

What the hell? What happened to supporting both. ‘If it still has a fanbase, we’ll continue to support it’ was something akin to what they stated when this subject was brought up. Seriously, SE, I’m getting sick of your bullshit.

Bullshit news, was an interview with SE last week in a Japanese magazine with the Head Producer, saying they will keep supporting both, and that they are already working on more content for FFXI…

Not this year. They promised they would give a one-year notice if they were to shut it down.

They better not shut it down. I have a Lv. 75 DRK that I plan on going back to.

That doesn’t sound right considering they released 3 dlc expansions only a short time ago.

This would be a poor move for Squeenix, especially after all the support XI’s received.
