Fable III to have no HUD, confirms Molyneux

Peter Molyneux’s confirmed at X10 that there will be no health bar and no HUD in Fable III.
The news is what the Lionhead boss feared people would be “pissed” about.
He insisted the RPG would be taking cues from recent action titles, with enviromental graphic changes showing you how close you are to being dead.
“Look at the screen! It’s completely clean,” said Molyneux, speaking at a presentation of the game, watched by Wired.
“Why do we need the fucking health bar,” he further added.
Fable III is due out this holiday season for Xbox 360.

And we’re supposed to be pissed off about that?

Does no Hud include mechanics like the breadcrumb trail?
This could benefit Fable. I’ve always felt that the franchise’s ‘gameiness’ has gotten in the way of Molyneux lofty ‘life simulation’ goals. Perhaps the lack of a HUD will aid a more organic feel in the gameplay?

Alot has to change before i even start to look forward to this game. Fable II to me was a huge dissapointment, after all that hyping from Molyneux….sigh.

You’re damn right I’m pissed, Molyneux! Good thing I just put the kettle on, then, huh.

“The fucking health bar”
that’s what’s make it an RPG with no health bar I just go and hide for a while then return like nothing happened !!! I’m playing fable not COD and then no health recovery items is this true ?? of course yes !!
and no Head up display is that mean’s I’ll just see the character with no map no little menu says press cross to throw the ball for your dog ???
and another question is the dog still exist ???

Made my decision I won’t buy the game unless they give us genius new Ideas instead …

Seriously, that was the thing that was gonna piss people off?
Hudless gaming is a *good* thing!

You can imagine how nervous the guy gets. Every time he opens his mouth, no matter what to say… someone is ready to rip him a new one.

I remember he did this trick with Black and White, before making Black and White 2 which had a full featured HUD… and was better.

So what exactly were the Natal features in the game? Havent they been shown yet?
Infact has anything Natal related been shown at X10 yet?

No HUD is great. Made Assassin’s Creed 1 much more enjoyable.

Natal seemed somewhat conspicuous by its absence last night, unless I missed a big report or something.
As far as I know there’s been no mention of Natal features in Fable III either. They’ve probably decided not to bother.

Well X10 isnt over already is it? Maybe they wanted to keep all the Natal stuff for today?

I would’ve sworn the ‘Touch’ feature would have used natal.

X10′s a one-day event.
That said, there’s a video blow-out coming later on I think.
Fable III, Reach, etc.

And that one-day is over then? So they had no Natal what so ever?

Seems not. And furthermore… good!

Removing the custom processor from the Natal hardware could well have put the brakes on Natal-compatibility for Fable, of course. Hard to justify giving processor cycles to something that’s optional when you’re trying to make a showcase title.

So 8 years after The Getaway made a huge fuss about dropping the HUD, Molyneux decides to do his usual song and dance about his game finally implementing the feature.
Don’t get me wrong, I like the Fable games and for the most part I enjoy Molyneux’s banter, but this is real barrel scraping stuff. The whole ‘pissed off’ thing was really just sniffing around for column inches

It’s not barrel scrapping if it works.
Perfect example of this working: Ico.
An RPG without a hud is going to be interesting, if nothing else. I can see where he’s going with this idea there – remove the interface, keep the interaction in the hands of the players.

What people don’t seem to be mentioning is that apparently there’s no “experience” either, which is potentially more eyebrow-raising for an RPG. Your character level is apparently based on the number of followers you have, which I’m guessing is a sort of ‘reputation’, and you can gain followers by doing all kinds of stuff rather than just by fighting.

Apparently weapons do still level in a way, they “grow” and change the more they’re used and depending on what you kill with them. They’ve just taken directly leveling the character to leveling only his tools.
Not to sure about the lack of a health bar, i’ve seen it pointed out but not in what way it’ll work; Does this mean the screen will just become more red? Will the game have FPS-style regeneration?

Yes, that’s exactly what it does, Geki. Just like in shooters.
Apparently Eurogamer are going to have a preview up ‘soon’.

I don’t think even Molyneaux would call fable a classic RPG now, beyond the fact you play a customisable role. I suppose this is as much an RPG as Heavy Rain is an Adventure game. It comes across like a post-Gygax action-adventure sim-RPG.
