God of War III gets 9 in world-first review in OPM UK
OPM UK has given God of War III a nine in the game’s first ever review in its latest issue hitting subs now.
Stating the reason why it barely missed out on a ten, the magazine’s Nathan Ditum said in closing the review: “The game is inches away from scoring 10/10, and it’s only the familiarity of the core gameplay that makes it feel less than the very, very best.
“But it’s definitely the biggest, and if this is the finale (and the corpses littering the stage by the end of the game suggest it might be), then God of War III gives PlayStation’s toughest hero the send-off he deserves.”
Goretastic.
Kratos’ last stand releases on March 16 in the US and March 25 in Japan. The game’s release is being aimed at March 19 in the UK, although that is still to be confirmed.
A new trailer will air on GameTrailers TV in the US tomorrow night. It’ll be the first time a new trailer has aired for the hack-and-slash in nearly a year.

The review didn’t really matter, after all, who else expected OPM to give it anything less?
It was always going to be day 1 for me anyway. Especially after the demo.

So, Uncharted 2 gets a 10, even though everything about it was familiar to anyone who’d played any game in the last 20 years, yet GoWIII gets 9?

Uncharted 2 was an immense improvement on the already good original.
GoW3 just feels like more of the same, which while no bad thing (considering the games are brilliant) just makes it feel like the series hasn’t moved on.
Uncharted 2 also had it’s excellent script and even though it took elements from a lot of different games and genres, it blended them all together and in most aspects improved upon them.

People generally dismiss official mag review scores, but in general I find them to be as honest as most other review sources. Surely this would have been a candidate for a pressured 10 if Sony had much editorial control.

The game was finished in November…there’d only be refinements between then and now…nothing to really change the review.

It’s OPM. The review is about as relevant as the opinion of Fox News on… anything.
I’m sure the game will be a spectacle of technical excellence, and a solid title in its own right, but its gameplay has always been rather simplistic at its core and it has become increasingly stale since its inception.

An Edge 7 is essentially an 8 to 9 in any other mag.
Not exactly a bad score from Edge at all if it did get it.
Does it matter what they think anyway?
Review scores are entirely subjective. If I read the review and I like the game then it doesn’t matter what the score is.
I think it’s time all reviews did away with scores. The whole furore surrounding them is getting ridiculous.

Having played the demo, I think it’s funny you say that Michael O’Connor.
I can think of many games that complicate mechanics by trying to extend them. Be it throguh levelling or extra gimmicks.
But not only does God of War do that (which I personally don’t like) it’s also an incredibly simple and yet complex design in it’s action. Much more complex than a shooter, or any other action game.
If I think about playing God of War top down, it’s a lot like a retro shooter, and the’ve designed it as such. It’s fantastic.

Plus GOW has cool puzzle elements as well. I look forward to those.
I wouldn’t dismiss review just cause it’s OPM. They’re pretty honest with all reviews and give crap scores to crap games as needed. (ie. Tony Hawk Ride, GH:VH, etc)

They are pretty great – great podcast too. If you don’t support their mag, atleast support what you don’t have to pay for.
Although this particular review must be factually wrong even on subjective points becuase of who reviewed it.

this is the demo that came with the god of war collection, its not available on PSN
which sucks, i tried to blag a code off of sony through there customer support webpage, but i got an email asking for a photocopy of my god of war collection receipt :p

I got the demo from somewhere – maybe US PSN has it freely available. It’s a very old demo though – from E3 last year. Does the review mention if they fixed the framerate issues of the demo?

OPM UK never gave a 6/10 for the original.
It was an 8 for that and a 9 for GoW II.

The demo was available through the GoW Collection and Sony also sent out codes to download the E3 demo.
And Johnny, according to Metacritic, OPM Uk gave GoW a 6/10.
