Activision Blizzard predicted last night that worldwide console sales this year will amount to around 47 million units, with the majority of growth coming from handheld systems.

Boss Bobby Kotick said that PS3 would sell 9 million units, 360 would move 8 million and Wii would add a further 12 million consoles to its global total before the end of 2010.

Over 18 million handheld consoles would be sold, he said.

The sales will take the global install base of console hardware to 265 million, up from the 218 million total at the end of 2009, a rise of 22 percent.

Kotick was speaking in the Activision Blizzard year-end earnings call last night. Get all the rest of the news from it here.
