Monday, 8th February 2010 17:05 GMT By Johnny Cullen

The reviews embargo for BioShock 2 just went, with scores starting to float in.

Get the round-up below.

Any links you’d like to add, do so below. We’ll add more reviews as they go live.

The first online reviews came pouring in on Friday, with nines across the board from IGN.

The sequel to the Levine classic is released tomorrow worldwide on PS3, 360 and PC.

Two reviews (one minus a score!) isn’t a roundup. :P

    Bare with me. :P

It did only go nearly ten minutes ago.

GiantBomb gave the game 4/5, Johnny, if you want to add that to the list. :)

    Bare with you Johnny?
I don’t get naked round other dudes.

Dtoid gave it an 8, the 7 is just for the multiplayer.

  6. The Hindle

  7. AHA-Lambda

You forgot the ign review which gave it 9.1

plus the destructoid score is wrong; destructoid gave the MP a 7 but the game overall an 8/10

  8. Gekidami

Seems as if the scores are nowhere near as high as the first game (which was the highest rated game of 06 if i remember correctly)

  9. onlineatron

Is it wrong of me to be put off buying the game with these scores?

I wasn’t too excited for it in the first place and was only going to buy it as I started to see glowing reviews… however, now, I’m not too sure.

  10. Transgenique (second or third french website) gave the game a 4/5.

So, another case of sequelitus, where an alternate developer makes a slightly less good follow up to a great game. Ala:

    - IW-Treyarch (CoD)
    - Bioware-Obsidian (KOTOR; NwN)

  12. Gekidami

There are 2 ways to look at this:

-The game just isnt as good as the first one.

-Bioshock was a stellar game in 06 amongst alot of rather bland releases. Since then there have been ALOT of good games. Standards have simply raised and Bioshock 2 is atleast as good as the first one.

    #12 5 years ago

Not understood the whole ‘only Treyarch CoD games are poor’ thing. They’ve all been successively worse than the previous one, aside from CoD 2.

AHA – I didn’t forgot the IGN reviews. We covered them on Friday.

We even linked to them underneath the rest of the reviews coming in today. ;)

  15. OnkelMaik 8.5/10

@13 – You think Modern Warfare is worse than CoD3!?

    Please. Pull the other one.

    #16 5 years ago
  17. Gekidami

WaW was better then CoD4 imo. CoD3 was a mess though.

  18. The Hindle

Bioshock came out in 07 alongside Cod 4, Uncharted, Mario Galaxy, Orange Box, and it still won most goty awards i think

    #18 5 years ago
  19. The Hindle

    Gametrailers 8.8

    #19 5 years ago
  20. Dr.Ghettoblaster

Those are great scores for a sequel I wasn’t expecting much out of. My copy arrives today – can’t wait.

These are the scores the first game should have got. Everyone got so caught up in the hype for that game.

  29. ianos

Nowgamer give 9.2 on 360, 9.1 on PC and 8.8 on PS3. And the PS3 review definitely isn’t the best just because it’s mine…

    #29 5 years ago
  30. Psychotext

“Everyone got so caught up in the hype for that game.”

Yet they reviewed it much the same when the PS3 version rolled around… long after the “hype” had subsided.

    “9.2 on 360, 9.1 on PC and 8.8 on PS3″

Just Another Reason PS3 Owners Shouldn’t Buy Bioshock 2 Being An Inferior Port And All.

Can anyone even quantify the difference 0.4 points makes? I find that bemusing? Three scores? What makes the XBOX 360 version 0.1 points better than the PC version?

How bloody stupid. NowGamer should have just given all three versions a 9 and done with it. At least we’d all be able to understand their bonkers scale.

  33. GZ_Dave

    GamerZines – 95%, Johnny.

I’m about to get stuck into it now. Thanks, Zavvi. :D

I still loved the twist towards the end of the first game. I doubt that any sequel could hold up to that.

As I explain every time, and as you’d see if you bothered to look: Nowgamer reviews are done by different people, they are different opinions held by said different people. It is not one monolith of opinion.

We all reviewed it completely independently of each other, as we all work on different mags. It’s telling that the general consensus is around the same mark though.

    #35 5 years ago

    Pants game.

  37. get2sammyb

@ianos – No need to get fucking snarky, mate. Perhaps the fact you keep needing to explain suggests you’re not making it very clear at all? Hmm?

All the same, thanks for clearing that up. That now makes sense.

“Yet they reviewed it much the same when the PS3 version rolled around… long after the “hype” had subsided.”

Well they had to, didn’t they? As long as it’s a technically sound port, it’s going to score similarly. Never understood the fuss over the game.

  39. Patrick Garratt

    Just added Kotaku’s there.

  40. Psychotext

“Never understood the fuss over the game.”

…and that’s why it’s overhyped, for you. Personally, I’ve never understood why people can’t understand that others have different likes, dislikes and opinions to them. :D

That you didn’t rate it, doesn’t make it overhyped.

    #40 5 years ago
  41. ecu

I rated it, it’s a decent shooter. Just not “best game ever” material. It falls apart after the reveal, they run out of ideas. Plus the combat is horrible and unsatisfying.

People can have different opinions to me, it just means they’re wrong. ;)

    #41 5 years ago
  42. SunKing

I think you both mean “overrated”.

“People can have different opinions to me, it just means they’re wrong. ;)”

I often say that to people, but then they spit in my face and laugh. I’ll show them, the fools! *shakes fist*

  43. Psychotext

    I know what I mean.

    #43 5 years ago
  44. SunKing

You’re right. In the context of review scores, to accuse a website/magazine of overhyping something is effectively the same as saying they overrated it. My bad.

    #44 5 years ago
  45. Blerk

The review scores seem fine to me, I’ll certainly be picking this up. I thought the original was awesomes, so ‘slightly less awesomes than the previous one’ is still pretty awesomes. Or something. :-D

  46. Michael O’Connor

Only in gaming could a string of 8s and 9s being considered “bad scores.” Dear lord.
