FFVII PS3 remake a no-go because game’s “style” hard to translate into HD

There’s that fat lady again. She’s just singing her lungs away, isn’t she? So, how’s the next verse in her dirge for Final Fantasy VII’s ain’t-gonna-happen PS3 remake go? Well, let’s take a listen.
In an interview with Ultimania magazine, producer Yoshinori Kitase and Motomu Toriyama explained that replicating FFVII’s “style” with snazzy HD graphics is a Cloud’s-Buster-Sword sized order.
“It is a result of considering HD graphics will be the mainstream. Considering the amount of work to make graphics that deserve HD, it is hard to make towns in the conventional style,” Toriyama said.
Final Fantasy XIII, of course, did away with towns altogether in order to remedy this problem.
“It is very hard to make games on PlayStation 3 in the same style as the games in that era had. Making graphics will take enormous time,” Kitase added.
Sure is a shame that everyone played FFVII for the towns, huh? If only the story, characters, and battle system were anywhere near as memorable. Then maybe Square could… naaaaah.
Thanks, 1UP.

So, they’re excuse is that they’re a bit shit and can’t do it? I don’t see how towns would be a problem… look at GTA, it has a bloody working city.

Ok so… Nothing new under the sun… Why do we still talking about it? Square Enix need some attention?

No gta ever had better looking graphics for very good reasons ,than a final fantasy released within the very same time period .
Their excuse for FFXIII was lame , and an obvious copeout and cover up for their verious and possible issues during ffxiii development (like was going 360 at fault , or issue taming the ps3 at first ? or both ? along many delays and other issues) , but it is still true that remaking FF7 to the standard people expect is a huge undertaking .
Personally i’d rather see the fund go to a new potentially great game .
People need to let go of ff7 already .
What happens when it is made hd and people realize that it was a great game back then , maybe not as much now even with HD graphics ?
And that making it relevant again would require gameplay changes that most nostalgic would b*tch and moan about ?
I call it already , if it’s ever done 2 scenarios (both obviously selling but with lots of negative critics) :
- it’s the same HD , then it look stale and people realise it’s not as great as they remembered , or that their tastes evolded since . basically by the time it’s released , people with b*tch about it not being a bioware game once again .
-It got a new gameplay , like crisis core tried . Grumpy farts will be obviously grumpy and angry that it’s not the same . And people will release that at least one generation of gamers who didnt play it then doesnt even care that much .
People constantly moan about Se milking and remake their stuff , half of the time for good reasons , and yet hypocritely demands , and not even politely , to redo FF7 (and for one exclusive console to boot) .
i’m sure many older FF fans got a FF game they’d love to see in HD that isnt ff7 (in my case FF6) , should they too be angry ?
Square only remade constantly old FF with the the very concept , idea and fact that it was easy to do so .
It’s “easy” to take FFI and remake it into a snes level gba/wonderswan FF . It remains equally easy to remake it again in nice yet low cost 3d for the DS …
And it was still easy to remake some dragon quest for the ps2 , with engines still similar to what they proposed with Dragon quest 7 .
But they wont for sure put a tremondeous fund into making an HD ff7 , unless near bankrupcy .
Hell where are the pitchforks to demands from Bioware that they remade Baldur’s gate with mass effect 2 level graphics ? You dont make such demands because you guys knows it would meet obvious resistance from bioware as well .

What a load of old bollocks on Square’s part.
Maybe if they stopped obsessing over making every single rock look perfect, they might get somewhere. If the likes of Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2 can do it, this can,.

And yet again bioware isnt starting (at least so far) a baldur’s 1 or 2 HD revival project for most likely the same reason of cost and time involved , when there is actually a big interest for it .
Imo too big of an undertaking for a reward that might not exceed that much , if at all , a “normal” new high profiled game … be it a new ip or a new entry in their popular series .

@6 Bioware doesn’t own the series. Interplay does…

“bioware isnt starting (at least so far) a baldur’s 1 or 2 HD revival project”
BioWare doesn’t own the license to Baldur’s Gate.
Hence why Dragon Age is often being tooted as the “spiritual sequel to Baldur’s Gate. And it’s a damn fine game too.

I like to think that they’re not doing it just to piss off the internet.

I bet they really regret making that FFVII intro movie for the PS3 E3 launch now.
It must have been very frustrating for them after taking ages building a fully detailed HD Midgar to realise that they couldn’t build any of the surrounding villages because they were too complicated.

No doubt creating all the HD assets for Advent Children and the various FMVs in Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core just rubbed salt in the wound, Bulk Slash.

I think you’re wrong about people realising that FF7 wasn’t as good as they remember. I played it again lately and though the battle system may seem a little slow everything else about the game is still great but obviously some people arent going to agree.
Square would make a fortune from remaking this game but lets face it it’s not gonna happen anytime soon is it, maybe in time for the Playstation 5 and xbox 2500. I’m gonna give up on holding my breathe and download FF8 onto my psp and start playing that again.

I’m playing through FFVII right now.
In fact, I just got to the scene where Aerith dies (shut up, it’s not a spoiler anymore), a few days ago. Wanna know something funny? I reached that scene on the anniversary of the game’s release, January 31st, without even realising the importance of that particular date.
The game is still totally awesome.

I don’t know if i even want them to remake FF VII am i the only one that still loves the charm of the original with the little square hands when not in battle, and i think the music somehow matches the style and by revamping it and making it look more realistic would sort of ruin alot of my favourite things about it.

Actually, thinking about it, the same engine is being used for FFXIV, as an MMO it’ll no doubt involve towns, and its the same engine.

They realize that they can’t wow people enough with 3D characters these days to cover for the less than stellar characters and story.

I HATE when a Dev. Co says something is to hard… kinda makes me loose a bit of faith in them.
